The most defensible choice for reducing airborne particles that may carry infectious agents is a portable HEPA air cleaner sized for the room, with a sufficiently high particle clean air delivery rate (CADR) and regular operation. An air purifier does not sterilize a room or guarantee that people will not become infected; use it alongside source control and ventilation.
What “germ killing” means for a home air purifier
For a household purifier, the useful, measurable goal is removing airborne particles—not killing every germ in a room. EPA says portable air cleaners can filter particles and may improve indoor air quality, but no air cleaner removes every pollutant. Filtration is a supplement to reducing pollutant sources and bringing in clean outdoor air where practical. That distinction matters because particles carrying infectious agents can be captured by filtration, but a purifier cannot prevent every exposure. EPA’s consumer guide notes that people spend about 90% of their time indoors, mostly at home; that figure appears in the guide’s second edition, dated August 2018, and is not a new 2026 measurement.

Prioritize particle filtration and smoke CADR
Look for a HEPA designation, a smoke CADR, or a clearly stated sub-micron particle-removal claim. EPA lists these as selection criteria for a residential purifier intended to filter viruses from air; they are not proof that different products perform equally. For common AHAM ratings, smoke CADR represents the smallest of the three particle categories and is the rating CDC/NIOSH says is most applicable to viral particles related to respiratory disease. Match CADR to the actual area
Use the room or open-plan area the unit will serve, rather than relying on a product name or an oversized advertised coverage figure. EPA’s estimates below assume an eight-foot ceiling; they are minimum particle CADR values, not guarantees of infection prevention.

These values come from EPA’s home air-cleaner sizing guidance. If the ceiling is higher than eight feet, account for the additional air volume rather than treating the listed area as an exact match.

Consider the speed and hours you can tolerate
Higher fan speeds and longer run times generally filter more air. A unit’s best-case performance is less useful if its noise or energy use leads you to turn it off. Place it where airflow is not blocked and choose an operating speed you can sustain. EPA provides placement and operation advice in its home guide; ENERGY STAR also advises attention to placement and airflow in its air-cleaner guidance.

Know what the filter can—and cannot—do
CADR is for particles, not gases
CADR measures particle-cleaning performance, not removal of gases or odors. If those are a concern, look for activated carbon or another absorbent filter designed for gases. EPA cautions that effectiveness depends on having enough filter material.

It is not mold remediation
A portable purifier may remove some airborne particles, but it does not correct the moisture problem that allows mold to grow. Address the source of moisture rather than treating filtration as a substitute for remediation.
Use caution with ozone and specialty technologies
Avoid devices intended to produce ozone. EPA says no federal agency has approved ozone generators for use in occupied spaces, and ozone at concentrations that do not exceed public-health standards does not effectively remove viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological pollutants. EPA’s ozone-generator guidance states plainly: “Ozone is a lung irritant.”

Some ionizing, electrostatic, or plasma designs—and some UV lights without adequate lamp coatings—may raise ozone concerns. Check evidence and emissions information for the specific device rather than assuming that a technology label guarantees safety or effectiveness. EPA describes upper-room UV germicidal irradiation (UVGI) as a well-established air-treatment approach when correctly installed and maintained, but it is not a substitute for effective ventilation or filtration. A small UV feature in a consumer purifier should not be treated as equivalent to a properly designed upper-room installation. Keep the purifier working as intended
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for replacing filters; there is no universal replacement interval that applies to every model.
- Check that replacement filters are available and compatible with the exact purifier model before buying.
- Keep the unit’s air intake and outlet clear so air can move through it.
- Continue addressing pollutant sources and ventilating with clean outdoor air where practical. EPA recommends portable air cleaners as a supplement, particularly where adequate ventilation is difficult.
For homes with forced-air HVAC, an HVAC filter rated MERV 13—or the highest rating the system can accommodate—may be an alternative or complement, but confirm compatibility with the system. CDC/NIOSH discusses HVAC filtration in its ventilation FAQ.
