The best air purifier for an apartment is one sized for the room or open-plan area where it will run—not the apartment’s total square footage. Compare independently verified smoke CADR with that area, then weigh noise at a usable fan speed, replacement-filter needs, energy use, and whether you need particle filtration, odor control, or both. No single portable cleaner reliably treats an entire apartment through closed doors.
How to size an air purifier for an apartment
Measure the enclosed room or connected open-plan zone the unit will serve. For an open layout, count the whole open area; walls and closed doors limit how much air one portable cleaner can treat. If no available unit is adequately sized for a large space, consider using more than one. Ceiling height, airflow obstructions, pollutant levels, fan setting, and runtime also affect results.
Use smoke CADR to compare particle cleaning
Clean air delivery rate (CADR) estimates how quickly a cleaner delivers filtered air for particles. AHAM reports separate smoke, dust, and pollen ratings; tobacco-smoke CADR is the most conservative of the three for small particles such as PM2.5. AHAM’s guidance is to choose a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area for a standard 8-foot ceiling. Its example: a 10-by-12-foot room is 120 square feet and calls for at least 80 smoke CADR. See the AHAM Verifide directory for certified room-air-cleaner ratings.

EPA and ENERGY STAR use an estimate of 65 cubic feet per minute (cfm) per 100 square feet for an 8-foot ceiling. ENERGY STAR’s published room-size guidance gives these examples:

These are estimates, not guarantees of performance in every apartment. A taller ceiling calls for a larger-rated cleaner. ENERGY STAR’s air-cleaner guidance provides the sizing table and energy-efficiency information.
EPA’s 2018 technical summary gives approximate appropriate areas of 30 square feet for a 20-cfm unit, 225 square feet for 150 cfm, and 450 square feet for 300 cfm. Those figures are also guidance under stated assumptions, not a promise for a particular layout or operating speed. Choose for the pollutant you want to reduce
Dust, pollen, smoke, and other particles
For airborne particles, start with a particle filter and a smoke CADR appropriate to the room. EPA says studies have found improvements in one or more allergy or asthma symptoms, but results are not uniform and do not improve every symptom. An air cleaner is one part of managing indoor air, not a substitute for addressing pollutant sources or ventilating with clean outdoor air when conditions allow.
Cooking smells and gases
CADR measures particle removal, not gases or odors. For those, look for activated carbon or another gas-targeted filter medium; EPA notes that a substantial amount of carbon matters. There is no widely used CADR-like rating system for gas-filter performance, so a carbon layer alone is not proof that a unit will eliminate cooking smells or volatile organic compounds. Mold
A purifier may capture some airborne mold particles, but it cannot fix the moisture problem that allows mold to grow or clean mold from surfaces. Address the moisture source and clean up the mold; filtration is not a replacement for those steps.
Compare the features that affect everyday use
- Noise at the speed you will use: CADR is typically measured at the highest fan speed, and more speed and runtime increase filtration. Check noise by setting where available; a unit that is too loud may be run less often.
- Replacement filters: Confirm the exact compatible filter model, recommended replacement interval, and current cost in manufacturer documentation. Dirty or overloaded filters do not work well.
- Energy use: Check the individual unit’s energy information and ENERGY STAR certification. ENERGY STAR’s room-air-cleaner metric compares CADR with watts, so certification concerns energy efficiency, not cleaning effectiveness. Its current guidance estimates standard room air cleaners use about 394 kWh per year and certified models are more than 50% more energy-efficient, saving about 211 kWh per year. These are published category estimates, not a forecast for a particular purifier or electricity rate.
- Ozone-related features: EPA advises avoiding cleaners that intentionally produce ozone, a lung irritant; some ionizing and other technologies may emit it. Check whether ionizer, electrostatic, UV, or plasma functions can be turned off, and consult relevant listings and product documentation.
- Placement: Follow the manual and keep intake and outlet paths clear of curtains, furniture, and other obstructions.
- Footprint and layout: Make sure the unit fits where air can circulate and where its noise will be tolerable, particularly in a bedroom or compact apartment.
A practical buying checklist
- Measure the room or open-plan area and note ceiling height.
- Choose an independently verified smoke CADR that meets the room-size guidance; use a higher rating for a higher ceiling or more demanding conditions.
- Decide whether your priority is particles, odors and gases, or both. For gases, look for a substantial gas-targeted medium rather than relying on CADR.
- Compare noise at the likely operating speed, compatible-filter cost and interval, energy information, and physical fit.
- Check current manufacturer documentation and the AHAM directory before buying, since certifications, specifications, and availability can change.
- Operate and maintain the cleaner according to its manual, and continue source control and appropriate ventilation.
What to expect from a portable purifier
A correctly sized cleaner can reduce some airborne particles in the area it serves, but performance depends on conditions and how it is operated. As EPA puts it, “No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.” Filtration does not replace controlling pollution sources or ventilating. ENERGY STAR certification speaks to energy efficiency; it is not an endorsement by EPA of a specific model’s health benefits.
