There is not enough comparable U.S. pricing to rank five 4K Blu-ray players fairly. The evidence supports three distinct options: the Sony UBP-X700 line as a lower-cost candidate, the Panasonic DP-UB820 as a feature-rich step-up, and the Panasonic DP-UB9000 as a premium choice. Prices below are U.S. examples reported in 2026, not guaranteed live prices; Sony’s pages also show different prices for the X700U and X700 listings. Confirm the exact model, stock and price before buying.

Which 4K Blu-ray players are worth considering?

A 4K UHD Blu-ray disc requires a 4K-capable player; a standard Blu-ray player cannot play UHD discs. The three candidates below cover different priorities, but their listed prices come from different pages and dates, so they are not a reliable five-model price ranking.

Player U.S. price evidence Best fit
Sony UBP-X700U / UBP-X700 Sony’s U.S. catalog lists the X700U at $329.99; Sony’s separate X700 product page lists $259.99. Crutchfield listed the X700U at $328 in its June 22, 2026 guide. These are distinct listings, not a verified current price comparison. Sony catalog; Sony X700 page; Crutchfield Lower-cost candidate; check the exact model suffix and HDR needs.
Panasonic DP-UB820 Crutchfield listed it at $649.99 in its June 22, 2026 guide. Tom’s Guide reported in September 2026 that Panasonic listed it at $649 and Best Buy at $549 at publication time; those are dated examples, not current guarantees. Crutchfield; Tom’s Guide Step-up option for broad HDR support and flexible audio connections.
Panasonic DP-UB9000 / DP-UB9000P1K Crutchfield listed the DP-UB9000P1K at $1,299.99 in its June 22, 2026 guide. Confirm local SKU and price. Crutchfield Premium pick for buyers prioritizing higher-end audio and build features.

Sony UBP-X700U or UBP-X700: lower-cost option

The Sony X700 line is the budget-oriented candidate here, but model suffix matters. Sony’s current U.S. catalog lists the X700U at $329.99, while its separate UBP-X700 page lists $259.99; Crutchfield’s June 2026 guide gives $328 for the X700U. These figures do not establish that the listings are interchangeable or that any one price remains available.

Sony’s X700 product page specifies UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, CD and SACD playback, built-in Wi-Fi, and two HDMI outputs. It supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision, with Dolby Vision available by firmware, and passes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X over HDMI. Check the exact listing and firmware status, and make sure its HDR formats match the display you use. Sony UBP-X700 specifications

Panasonic DP-UB820: feature-rich step-up

The UB820 is the balanced step-up candidate. Crutchfield lists HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG support. Panasonic’s Australian product page documents an HCX processor, 4K High Precision Chroma Processing, HDR Optimizer, twin HDMI outputs, 7.1-channel analog outputs, built-in Wi-Fi and UHD playback. The Australian page’s specifications are useful for features, but confirm that the model and connections match the unit sold in your market. Crutchfield feature listing; Panasonic Australia DP-UB820

Its range of HDR formats makes it a flexible pairing for displays that support different HDR standards. Twin HDMI outputs and 7.1-channel analog audio can also matter in a home theater where the receiver or processor’s connections are a constraint. Panasonic’s Australian page says security updates were supported only until August 31, 2023; do not assume ongoing security support from that page.

Panasonic DP-UB9000: premium audio-focused choice

Crutchfield identifies the DP-UB9000P1K as its audiophile 4K pick and listed it at $1,299.99 in June 2026. It describes HDR support alongside higher-end audio and build features. What Hi-Fi? also recommends the DP-UB9000 as a high-end option. Model identifiers and prices can vary by region, so verify the exact local SKU rather than treating the P1K suffix or U.S. listing price as universal. Crutchfield; What Hi-Fi? 2026 guide

Why this is not a five-player price ranking

A meaningful ranking needs five exact models offered in the same market, currency and time window, with comparable stock status. The available price examples mix U.S. retailer listings, different Sony model pages and broader UK/US editorial recommendations. What Hi-Fi?’s guide covers additional tested players and multiple markets, but the available information does not establish comparable U.S. prices for five exact models. Filling out a ranked list with mismatched variants or out-of-market prices would make the order misleading.

To rank models for your own purchase, first fix your country and currency, then compare the exact model suffixes and in-stock prices on the same date. After sorting by price, weigh HDR support, audio connections, disc formats and network features against the equipment you already own.

What to check before buying

  • Disc compatibility: Confirm the player supports 4K UHD Blu-ray, not just standard Blu-ray. Consider CD or SACD playback only if you use those formats.
  • HDR formats: Check whether the player and your TV or projector support the HDR formats you want, especially Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
  • Audio path: If your receiver lacks HDMI, analog outputs such as the UB820’s 7.1-channel connections may be important. If your receiver supports HDMI, check whether a second HDMI output for audio offers a practical benefit in your setup.
  • Network features: Verify Wi-Fi and any streaming services you intend to use; availability can vary by region and over time.
  • Exact listing: Match the model identifier, included features, stock status and live price. Do not assume similarly named regional variants are identical.

Is 4K Blu-ray worth it?

It can be worthwhile if you own or plan to buy UHD discs and want a dedicated player with connections or disc support your other devices lack. The format requires a 4K-capable player, and the right model depends on your display’s HDR support and your audio system. If you do not use UHD discs, the higher-priced step-up and premium options may not provide a useful benefit for your setup.
