If you want to watch 4K movie discs without using a game console, choose a dedicated Ultra HD Blu-ray player. The Panasonic DP-UB820 is the strongest all-round pick in What Hi-Fi?’s guide, last updated January 28, 2026: it supports Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HDR10+, and offers connections that can suit more elaborate home-cinema systems. The Sony UBP-X700 is a lower-cost alternative, while the UBP-X800M2 is worth considering if SACD playback matters to you.

What to look for in a dedicated 4K Blu-ray player

A 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player reads movie discs directly and sends video and audio to your display or sound system. Before choosing one, check the formats in your disc collection, the HDR formats your TV supports, and the connections your setup needs. A player may support a particular HDR format without your TV supporting it, so both devices need to be compatible to use that format.

  • HDR: HDR10 is the baseline format among these options. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are additional formats; support varies by player and TV.
  • Audio connections: If you use an AV receiver, confirm whether you need a second HDMI output, a digital audio connection or multichannel analogue outputs. The right choice depends on your existing equipment.
  • Disc formats: If you own SACD or DVD-Audio discs, check for those formats specifically. 4K video-disc support does not imply support for every audio-disc format.
  • Region and model suffix: Specifications and regional playback constraints can differ between market versions. Verify the exact local model before buying.

Player Best suited to HDR and format notes Connections and caveats
Panasonic DP-UB820 / DP-UB820EB Best all-round choice HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, according to What Hi-Fi?’s January 2026 guide Twin HDMI and 7.1-channel analogue output; no SACD or DVD-Audio support, according to What Hi-Fi?
Sony UBP-X700 Lower-cost alternative Dolby Vision; TechRadar says it does not support HDR10+ What Hi-Fi? lists two HDMI outputs and coaxial digital output. TechRadar notes settings and menu drawbacks.
Sony UBP-X800M2 Buyers with SACD discs Sony lists Ultra HD Blu-ray and SACD playback Check current local availability and price; it was not among TechRadar’s top-value choices.
LG UBK90 Possible market-specific option LG Australia’s older specification sheet lists Dolby Vision and HDR10 decoding Australian-market document marked 05/18; it lists dual HDMI, with the second output audio-only, and regional DVD/Blu-ray playback constraints. Check local compatibility and availability.

Panasonic DP-UB820: best all-round

For a broad range of HDR formats and flexible system connections, the Panasonic DP-UB820 is the most complete option in this group. What Hi-Fi?’s guide, last updated January 28, 2026, names it best overall and lists HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Panasonic’s UK and Ireland product page identifies it as an Ultra HD Blu-ray player with 4K/HDR playback, HCX processing, HDR Optimizer, twin HDMI, wireless LAN and 7.1-channel analogue output.

The extra outputs matter only if your setup can use them; they are not a reason by themselves to replace a working receiver or add accessories. If SACD or DVD-Audio playback is essential, this is not the right choice: What Hi-Fi? lists neither format as supported. Check the exact regional suffix, stock and price. TechRadar reported in September 2026 that Panasonic’s US list price had risen to $649; that figure is a US list price reported at that time, not a universal current street price.

Sony UBP-X700: lower-cost alternative

The UBP-X700 is a reasonable alternative if the Panasonic’s broader HDR support or connections are not priorities. TechRadar describes the Sony as an affordable player with Dolby Vision and Wi-Fi, but it does not support HDR10+. What Hi-Fi? lists two HDMI outputs and coaxial digital output. TechRadar also notes drawbacks in its settings and menus, so consider ease of setup as well as format support.

Sony UBP-X800M2: for SACD collections

The UBP-X800M2 is the clearest fit here if you want a 4K disc player that also plays SACD. Sony’s specifications page lists both Ultra HD Blu-ray and SACD playback. TechRadar describes it as supporting Dolby Vision and a wide range of discs, but does not place it among its top-value picks. Confirm that the model is sold in your market and that the exact version supports the discs you own.

LG UBK90: verify the local version

The LG UBK90 appears in an Australian specification sheet marked 05/18, which lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, Dolby Vision and HDR10 decoding. It also describes dual HDMI, with the second output for audio only, and region-related constraints for DVD and Blu-ray playback. Because this is an older, market-specific document, treat it as a prompt to check the exact local version—not as evidence of current availability or specifications everywhere.

Check your connections before you buy

Identify where the player’s video and audio need to go. A straightforward TV setup may need only one HDMI connection. If you have a receiver or separate audio system, check its available inputs and whether you want video and audio routed separately. The DP-UB820’s twin HDMI and 7.1-channel analogue outputs can help with some systems; the Sony X700 also has two HDMI outputs according to What Hi-Fi?. A second HDMI port does not guarantee a particular setup will work, so compare the player and receiver manuals for the connection you plan to use.

  • Choose the Panasonic DP-UB820 if you want the broadest HDR-format support in this comparison and value flexible audio and HDMI connections.
  • Choose the Sony UBP-X700 if you want a more affordable class of player and Dolby Vision support is sufficient; it does not support HDR10+.
