Best overall: Panasonic DP-UB820. It is a strong all-round shortlist choice for a home theater because published reviews rate it highly and Panasonic documents useful HDR and connection features. The right player for you still depends on your TV or projector, audio system, disc collection, and local model version. This guide synthesizes manufacturer specifications and published reviews; it is not based on firsthand testing.

Which player should you buy?
Choose the Panasonic DP-UB820 for a flexible all-round system
The UB820 is the most straightforward starting point if you want broad HDR-format support and connections that can help with a more involved setup. What Hi-Fi? ranks it best overall in its 2026 buying guide. Panasonic Australia lists twin HDMI outputs, HDR Optimizer, 7.1-channel analogue audio, networking and high-resolution audio playback. Those specifications are from the Australian listing, so confirm the features on the exact version sold in your market before buying.

Consider the Panasonic DP-UB9000 for a premium build and feature set
The UB9000 is the premium Panasonic alternative, not an automatic upgrade for every theater. Panasonic UK documents HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HDR Optimiser and a reference design for the DP-UB9000EB. The US collection lists a different code, DP-UB9000P1K. Confirm your region’s product specifications and price; do not assume the UK model code or listing applies elsewhere.
Its premium positioning makes most sense when its documented features and design matter to your system and budget. If they do not, compare the UB820’s format and connection support against your actual needs instead.

Sony says the UBP-X800M2 plays Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG with compatible discs and displays. Sony’s FAQ states a $329.99 MSRP and indicates it was generated July 23, 2026; verify the current price and local availability rather than treating that MSRP as a live offer.

Match HDR formats to your TV or projector
HDR is not one interchangeable format. Confirm which formats your display supports, then look for a player that can output the formats used by the discs you watch. A player cannot make a TV or projector display an HDR format it does not support. For example, Sony lists Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG on the UBP-X800M2 for compatible discs and displays; Panasonic’s UB820 is described by Panasonic and What Hi-Fi? as supporting a broad range of HDR features.
- Check the display’s manual or product specifications for HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision or HLG support.
- Check the player’s specifications for the same formats, and confirm the exact regional model.
- For a projector or TV with limited HDR support, prioritize compatible playback and any relevant tone-mapping features rather than the longest format list.
Panasonic lists HDR Optimizer for the UB820 on its Australian page and HDR Optimiser for the UK DP-UB9000EB. These are manufacturer-listed features; confirm how they apply to the specific model and system you are considering.

Check the complete audio signal path
To hear an Atmos or DTS:X soundtrack, the disc must include that track, the player must send it in a usable format, and the receiver or soundbar and connection path must support it. A player’s headline audio capability alone does not guarantee immersive sound.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Check the disc packaging or menu for the Atmos or DTS:X soundtrack you intend to use.
- Check the player’s audio output settings and the formats it can pass through or decode.
- Check whether the receiver or soundbar supports that format and whether the connection between devices carries it.
- Set the player and audio device to compatible output modes, then confirm the receiver or soundbar reports the expected format during playback.
What Hi-Fi? recommends compatible audio equipment for immersive sound. Depending on your equipment and installation, you may need a high-speed HDMI cable; an expensive cable is not a substitute for format support or a compatible signal path.

Check connections before choosing a model
Connection needs can distinguish two players that otherwise appear similar. Panasonic Australia lists twin HDMI outputs and 7.1-channel analogue audio for the UB820, which may suit systems with separate video and audio routing or analogue inputs. Do not assume every regional UB820 listing has identical specifications: verify the exact local model.
- HDMI: Count the inputs on your TV, receiver and other devices, and check the player’s output arrangement against your preferred wiring.
- Analogue audio: If you need analogue multichannel output, confirm the player explicitly provides it and that your audio system has matching inputs.
- Networking: Panasonic lists networking for the Australian UB820. If network access or streaming apps matter, check the current local listing for supported services rather than assuming that a network port guarantees a particular app.
- High-resolution audio: Panasonic lists high-resolution audio playback for that UB820 version; confirm supported formats and your playback source in the local documentation.
Consider the discs you already own
A dedicated 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player is useful even if your collection is mixed: the What Hi-Fi? buying guide says 4K players can also play standard Blu-rays and DVDs. If older Blu-rays make up a large share of your viewing, include upscaling in your comparison. A player’s ability to play an older disc and the quality of its upscaling are separate considerations; check published reviews and exact model documentation rather than assuming all players handle older material equally.
Quick Recap
Set up a new player
- Connect video: Connect the player to a compatible 4K TV or projector, directly or through a receiver that supports the video formats and signal you plan to use.
- Confirm HDR on both ends: Verify the display and player support the HDR format used by the disc. Review the player’s output settings if the display does not switch into the expected mode.
- Configure sound: For Atmos or DTS:X, check the disc soundtrack, player output setting, receiver or soundbar capability, and connection path.
- Test a known disc: Play a disc with the format you want to use and check the display or audio device’s signal information to confirm the expected mode is active.
