If you want one 4K TV for PC gaming and everyday entertainment, the 42-inch LG C6 OLED is the strongest current near-size pick supported by the available reviews. It is not a 40-inch TV: the best-supported premium choices in this size range are 42 or 43 inches. Measure your space before buying, especially if the TV must fit on a desk or inside a cabinet.

Best near-40-inch 4K TV for PC gaming

LG C6 OLED42C6PUA: the best-supported all-round pick

RTINGS names the 42-inch LG OLED42C6PUA its leading choice in its guide to 40-, 42- and 43-inch TVs, updated September 15, 2026, and recommends the C6 in its PC-monitor guide. The cited PC features include four HDMI 2.1 ports, support for up to 4K at 165Hz, HDMI Forum VRR, AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-SYNC, and correct chroma 4:4:4 rendering for PC text. RTINGS’ compact-TV recommendations and its PC-gaming monitor guide provide the model-specific findings.

Those specifications describe the TV’s supported capabilities, not a promise that every PC game will run at 4K and 165 frames per second. Actual output depends on the computer, game, cable, selected HDMI input and settings. Confirm the exact regional model and its specifications before purchase.

Samsung S90H: consider it for a bright room

The 42-inch Samsung QN42S90HAEXZA is a same-size OLED alternative. RTINGS identifies its matte screen coating as an advantage in bright rooms; in its comparison, it describes the LG as brighter and more versatile in image processing. Choose based on your room and priorities rather than treating either screen as a universal winner. RTINGS’ size guide and PC-gaming guide discuss the alternatives.

Sony K-43XR30M2: a 43-inch option

If 43 inches fits your space, RTINGS lists the Sony K-43XR30M2 as a mid-range alternative with four HDMI 2.1-bandwidth inputs, a 120Hz refresh rate and VRR. It offers anti-reflective treatment and Google TV, but RTINGS notes weaker dark-room contrast and lower peak brightness than the LG. These trade-offs make it worth considering for its interface or reflection handling, not as a direct upgrade in dark-room picture performance. See RTINGS’ size-specific assessment.

How to choose a TV for a PC desk

Check the physical fit, not just the diagonal

A 42- or 43-inch screen may be marketed in the same compact-TV category as 40-inch sets, but the difference can matter on a desk or in a shallow cabinet. Measure the available width and height, the stand footprint, and the space needed for cables. Also consider how far you will sit: a screen that works for viewing across a room may feel too large at a desk.

Match refresh rate and VRR to your PC

For high-refresh gaming, check the exact TV model’s native panel refresh rate and which HDMI inputs support the needed bandwidth. The C6 is listed as supporting up to 4K/165Hz through four HDMI 2.1 ports, plus HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync and G-SYNC. Make sure your graphics card and chosen connection support the output you want; the game and settings determine the frame rate you actually see.

Do not assume every HDMI port or regional model has identical capabilities. Check the specifications for the exact model suffix and connect the PC to an input that supports the required signal. The reviewed findings do not provide numeric input-lag measurements, so they do not establish a comparative input-lag winner.

Check desktop text rendering

When a TV doubles as a monitor, small text and interface elements matter as much as game graphics. RTINGS reports that the C6 displays chroma 4:4:4 correctly, a useful capability for clear PC text. Set the PC input and output appropriately, then inspect text at your actual seating distance.

Picture and entertainment trade-offs

OLED contrast can suit films and games in a dark room, while reflections and brightness become more important in a sunny space. RTINGS highlights the Samsung S90H’s matte coating for bright-room viewing and describes the LG as brighter overall in its comparison. For Sony’s 43-inch option, RTINGS notes lower peak brightness and weaker dark-room contrast than the LG.

For general entertainment, compare the HDR formats, upscaling, streaming interface, apps and speakers against the services and equipment you use. The cited reviews establish useful model and gaming details, but do not establish a universal winner for audio performance or app availability. What Hi-Fi’s C5 review, for example, lists webOS 25 for that model; that is a C5-generation specification, not a specification to assume for the C6. Read What Hi-Fi’s LG C5 review.

Prior-generation alternatives and what their specs mean

The 42-inch LG C5 is a useful prior-generation comparison if you find one available and want to assess its listed capabilities separately from the newer C6. What Hi-Fi lists the C5 with a 4K OLED panel, four 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 inputs, and gaming support for 4K/144Hz, VRR, ALLM, Dolby Vision game mode and HGiG. These are C5-specific findings; do not transfer them to the C6. What Hi-Fi’s C5 review covers those details.

TechRadar’s compact-TV guide also includes the LG C5 and 43-inch Samsung QN90F Neo QLED among its options. Treat these as alternatives to investigate rather than stronger current recommendations: the available findings do not establish them as better overall picks than the C6 for this use. TechRadar says its guide considers picture, audio and gaming performance, including brightness, color, input lag, HDMI 2.1, 120Hz, VRR and ALLM. See TechRadar’s small-TV guide.

Before you buy

  • Verify the size: confirm the TV’s full dimensions and stand footprint against your desk, cabinet or mount location.
  • Verify the exact model: check the model suffix and regional listing; specifications can vary by market and generation.
  • Verify your connection: confirm the PC, cable and selected HDMI input can carry your intended resolution, refresh rate and VRR signal.
  • Think about room lighting: weigh OLED picture characteristics against reflections and brightness in your room.
  • Check the entertainment features you use: confirm the HDR formats, streaming apps, interface and audio setup you need rather than assuming all models are equivalent.
