An AI-based road survey run by the Bengaluru North City Corporation reportedly rated 82.1% of the road length it assessed as good or satisfactory. The survey covered 2,493.5 km across seven divisions and 72 wards. The figures come from news coverage of a report by The Hans India, published in 2026. The corporation’s own survey document and methodology are not publicly available in the coverage I could find, so the numbers are best read as reported findings rather than independently verified measurements.

The key figures

Measure Reported value Notes
Road length surveyed 2,493.5 km Across seven divisions and 72 wards
Rated good or satisfactory 82.1% of surveyed length (about 2,047 km) A combined category; the two grades are not reported separately
Rated good 1,426.8 km Listed as a separate line item
Minor surface defects 607.1 km Listed as a separate line item
Potholes identified 14,393 A count, not a count of roads
Potholes per kilometre 5.8 on average Equal to 14,393 divided by 2,493.5 km, rounded

All of these values are as reported in the news summary of The Hans India report. The breakdown of the categories is not explained beyond the table above.

What “82.1%” actually measures

The percentage is a share of road length, measured in kilometres. It is not a share of individual roads, and it is not a count of streets or road segments. A short, badly damaged lane and a long, sound arterial road carry very different weight in this measure only in proportion to their length, so a headline about “roads” can suggest a different picture than the one the survey describes.

The 82.1% also combines two grades: roads rated “good” and roads rated “satisfactory.” It should not be read as meaning that 82.1% of kilometres are free of defects. The coverage does not say what separates a “satisfactory” road from a “good” one, and it does not say how the 607.1 km with minor surface defects fit into the grading.

  • 【AR Stakeout】Paired with the handheld collector, SingularPad enables AR stakeout—overlaying virtual point guidance on the camera view for faster, intuitive field layout.

The separate lengths also do not add up cleanly to the headline share. The 1,426.8 km rated good and the 607.1 km with minor defects total 2,033.9 km, or about 81.6% of the surveyed length. That is close to 82.1%, but not the same. The reporting does not explain whether the minor-defect length overlaps with the satisfactory group, so the satisfactory length cannot be derived with confidence from the published numbers. Use the 82.1% figure as the reported combined share, and avoid rebuilding the breakdown from the other figures.

The headline rounds 82.1% down to 82%. That rounding is harmless for the headline itself, but the headline also drops the word “satisfactory,” which changes what the figure claims.

The larger the measurement range, the smaller the error. The altitude data displayed on the device is GPS altitude, which fluctuates with changes in the satellite signals received. This is normal

Potholes and damage from utility work

The survey reportedly identified 14,393 potholes, an average of 5.8 per kilometre across the surveyed length. The per-kilometre figure follows directly from the total and the surveyed length, so the two numbers are consistent with each other. Neither is a count of roads with potholes, and the coverage does not say how many road segments contained at least one pothole.

The report also records road damage linked to utility work, including work carried out by water and electricity agencies. This is a notable point because a road can be damaged by excavation or reinstatement that is not related to the wear of the road surface itself. The coverage does not explain how the survey treated segments affected by recent utility work when assigning condition ratings, so readers cannot tell from the reporting whether those stretches were rated differently.

What the report does and does not commit to

The report says that roads needing work may be considered for future improvement projects. That is a possibility described in the report, not a scheduled commitment. The coverage does not identify a repair timetable, a list of roads due for work, a budget, or a promise that any particular road will be repaired.

No named official is quoted in the coverage available, and no formal corporation statement on the survey could be located. Any description of what the corporation plans should therefore be treated as indirect and attributed to the report.

What the public record does not yet show

  • The methodology: the coverage does not describe how the AI system was built, what data it used, or how it was checked against manual inspection.
  • The rating thresholds: the boundaries between good, satisfactory and minor-defect roads are not stated.
  • The survey provider: whether the corporation ran the survey in-house or through an outside firm is not reported.
  • Inspection timing: the period in which the roads were surveyed is not given in the coverage, so the figures cannot be placed reliably in time.
  • Validation: there is no reported independent check of the ratings or the pothole count.
  • A repair schedule: no timeline or funding commitment accompanies the findings.

How to read similar AI road-survey claims

The Bengaluru North figures are a useful example of what to check whenever a city reports an automated road assessment. Before accepting a headline percentage, look for the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Denominator: is the share based on road length, road count, or area? A percentage of kilometres and a percentage of streets can point in different directions.
  • Categories: are the good and satisfactory grades reported separately, and are their definitions published?
  • Totals: do the reported category lengths add up to the surveyed total and to the headline share?
  • Method and checks: is there a description of the sensor or AI method, and any comparison with manual inspection?
  • Timing: when was the survey carried out, and was it before or after recent utility works?
  • Commitments: does the report tie findings to a named project, budget or date, or only describe possible future work?

For this survey, the most useful next step would be the corporation’s underlying survey document, which would answer most of the open questions above.
