The Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper is proposed, but its route and timetable are not confirmed. A report published on 7 October 2026 said South Western Railway had not received official Railway Board communication approving the train. The most recently reported likely alignment runs via Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur and Solapur, as well as other stops—but passengers should not treat those stops or the reported timings as final.

What is the current status of the Bengaluru–Mumbai sleeper train?

The latest report, published by The New Indian Express on 7 October 2026, said South Western Railway (SWR) had not received official Railway Board communication approving the proposed service. That means the reported route and schedule remain tentative; the train should not be described as approved, launched or available to book on the strength of this report.

There is an earlier indication of intent, but it is not an approval notice. On 17 May 2026, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the service was “expected to start soon,” according to a Ministry of Railways press release published by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). An expectation does not establish a launch date, final route or operating timetable.

For context, a PIB-published Ministry of Railways response dated 18 March 2026 listed the Howrah–Kamakhya train as the sleeper service operating on the network as of 12 March 2026. This is a dated snapshot, not a live service list for October. The ministry said that introducing new services depends on section capacity, available paths, rolling stock, matching infrastructure, maintenance and traffic requirements.

What route is being reported?

The 7 October report describes the likely route between Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Mumbai as:

SMVT Bengaluru → Dharmavaram → Anantapur → Guntakal → Raichur → Wadi → Kalaburagi → Solapur → Pune → Kalyan → CSMT Mumbai

This is a reported likely alignment, not a confirmed stop list. Kalaburagi is included in the latest reported route even though it is not named in the original headline wording. The final route and which stations the train would serve have not been established by an official timetable or route notification.

What timings and frequency have been reported?

The New Indian Express report gives the following tentative operating details. It explicitly says the official timetable had not been confirmed.

Direction Reported departure Reported arrival Reported journey time
SMVT Bengaluru to CSMT Mumbai 7:50 p.m. 11:55 a.m. the next day About 16 hours 5 minutes
CSMT Mumbai to SMVT Bengaluru 8:10 p.m. 11:55 a.m. the next day About 15 hours 45 minutes

The same report describes a proposed frequency of six days a week and a reported distance of 1,118 km. These are reported planning details, not published operating commitments. It also says Solapur and Pune were identified for cleaning and water-filling arrangements.

The suggested arrival time may matter to passengers planning a work trip. In the report, regular commuter Nandan Kulkarni said that reaching either terminal after 10 a.m. could make a business journey less practical because working hours would already be underway. That is a passenger’s view, not an official assessment of the proposed schedule.

Why is the Kalaburagi route being discussed?

The report says the route through Kalaburagi was preferred in planning because it has fewer curves and includes sections that can support speeds of up to 130 km/h. That figure refers to the capability attributed to sections, not the train’s average speed or a guaranteed speed. The report also identifies a 55 km/h Londa–Kittur section as a potential journey-time constraint; this is a reported planning consideration, not a confirmed Railway Board explanation.

A possible Hubballi alternative is described as having more curves and ghat sections, with speed restrictions that could lengthen the journey. The report says a separate sleeper service via Hubballi was suggested by sources, but that possibility is speculative—not an approved second train. No confirmed head-to-head service plan is available.

The report also says 17 pairs of trains already use the likely route, so accommodating a new service could require changes to existing timetables. Whether such changes would be made is not confirmed.

What remains unconfirmed?

  • Whether the Railway Board approved the service after the 7 October report.
  • The final route, stops and operating days.
  • The official departure and arrival times, journey duration and launch date.
  • Fares, booking availability and any confirmed passenger-demand figures.
  • Whether a separate Bengaluru–Mumbai sleeper service via Hubballi will be introduced.

For comparison, the government-hosted PIB release from 17 January 2026 reported the launch of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express and said BEML had been entrusted with the design and development of ten sleeper trainsets. That programme context does not confirm that a particular trainset or operating slot has been assigned to the proposed Bengaluru–Mumbai service.
