Ben Affleck has called dire predictions about AI and jobs “all this propaganda,” and said films using AI have employed the same number of people—or more. That is his account of some film productions, not proof that AI cannot displace workers across the economy. Fortune reported the comments on October 2, 2026, from an interview with Bloomberg.
What did Ben Affleck say about AI wiping out jobs?
Affleck argued that fears of AI-driven mass job loss are overstated and described AI as a tool being used in filmmaking. Fortune quoted him saying: “It’s being used on films now where they have the same number of people—in fact, more people technically are being employed.”
The statement concerns film productions he has encountered. Fortune’s report provides no production-by-production staffing figures, comparison of similar projects with and without AI, or explanation of which jobs were counted. It should therefore be read as Affleck’s observation, not as a measured industry-wide finding. Fortune’s report attributes the interview to Bloomberg.

Fortune juxtaposed Affleck’s comments with a broader U.S. employment comparison: motion picture and video production had 49,000 fewer jobs in 2026 than in 2016, a decline of 21%, citing U.S. Department of Labor data. That figure describes a decade-long change in the industry, not the effect of AI. The report does not establish that AI caused the decline, and the aggregate comparison does not show how AI affected staffing on individual productions.

These are different kinds of evidence: Affleck’s anecdotal account concerns particular films, while the 49,000-job figure is an industry-level comparison over time. Neither, on its own, answers how many jobs AI has created or eliminated. The available reporting does not provide comparable production headcounts, a causal analysis, or a verified forecast of AI’s total employment effects.
Is Affleck’s view shaped by his own AI work?
Yes, that context is relevant. Fortune reports that Affleck founded InterPositive, an AI-focused filmmaking startup, in 2022. Bloomberg reported in March 2026 that Netflix would pay as much as $600 million for the company; Bloomberg also said the actual cash price was lower and the terms were private. The maximum reported figure is not a confirmed final price. Bloomberg’s acquisition report provides commercial context for Affleck’s perspective, but it does not establish whether his employment observation is accurate.

What about the fear that AI could kill us all?
Calling catastrophic AI predictions “propaganda” is Affleck’s characterization, not evidence that every serious risk is imaginary. The reported remarks address his outlook and his experience with AI in filmmaking; they do not present a technical safety analysis or substantiate a conclusion about the likelihood of existential harm. The same distinction applies to employment: one person’s experience can inform a debate without settling it.

Quick Recap
Rank #3
What can readers conclude from the comments?
- Affleck believes AI can be used as a filmmaking tool without reducing staffing on the productions he has observed.
- Fortune’s account does not include the project-level staffing evidence needed to verify that claim or generalize it to the film industry.
- The reported decline in U.S. motion picture and video production jobs from 2016 to 2026 is industry context, not proof that AI caused job losses.
- Affleck’s role in founding an AI filmmaking company is relevant context, while neither that connection nor the acquisition reporting proves or disproves his employment claim.
