BelPet is a desktop pet built with Godot 4 and C#. Its creator, pixeguy, combined a draggable character with Spotify controls, using a browser-based playback SDK inside a WebView and native desktop-window behavior to keep the pet on screen.
What is BelPet?
BelPet puts a small character named Bel on the Windows desktop. You can drag him around, and when you let go, simple gravity brings him back toward the usable desktop area above the taskbar. The character also acts as a compact Spotify controller, intended to reduce the need to reopen the main Spotify app.
Its controls include play and pause, previous and next track, seeking through the current song, and volume adjustment by scrolling over Bel. The interface can also show the current album artwork. That made BelPet less a conventional game and more an exercise in connecting an engine, web technologies, authentication, and desktop operating-system behavior.

Getting the Web Playback SDK Into Godot
The main integration challenge was that the Spotify Web Playback SDK is a client-side JavaScript library designed for browser environments, while BelPet’s main application is written in Godot 4 and C#. Spotify describes the SDK as a way to create a local Spotify Connect device in a browser, play and control tracks, and read playback metadata. Spotify Web Playback SDK documentation.
Pixeguy’s solution was to use godot_wry to embed a WebView in the Godot app. A small HTML and JavaScript page inside that view hosts the Spotify SDK, while the main application remains in Godot/C#. This division lets the browser-oriented library run in an environment it supports while BelPet provides the visible desktop-pet interface.

The Web API reference documents operations for playback state, the currently playing track, transferring playback, starting or resuming and pausing playback, skipping, seeking, and setting volume. That establishes the general API capabilities, not BelPet’s exact code or polling interval. Spotify Web API reference.
Making Godot Behave Like a Desktop Pet
BelPet’s desktop feel depends on the native window, not just the character animation. Pixeguy describes a transparent, borderless, always-on-top window. Custom mouse-passthrough regions let clicks on blank transparent parts of the window reach applications underneath, while Bel remains clickable and draggable.
When released, Bel’s simple gravity behavior moves him toward the bottom of the usable desktop, stopping above the Windows taskbar. Together, the window and input behavior create the illusion that Bel is sitting on the desktop rather than inside an ordinary app window.

The account describes Windows taskbar behavior, but does not establish which operating systems are supported, whether current release binaries are available, or the exact build procedure. It is a retrospective on the implementation, not a step-by-step setup guide.

Then I Discovered Spotify’s Development Restrictions
Pixeguy says they encountered Spotify Development Mode restrictions late in development. In the described setup, BelPet can play music when it is the active device, but the Web API features used when another device is active require the user’s account to be authorized for the creator’s development app.
The creator’s proposed workaround is for each user to create a Spotify developer application, enter their own Client ID in BelPet, and build the project. Pixeguy also says Spotify Premium is required. Treat these as the creator’s account of BelPet’s requirements, not a guarantee of current eligibility: Spotify access conditions can change, and the Web API documentation links to a Development Mode changes guide dated February 2026. Check Spotify’s current policies before attempting to build or distribute an integration.
Spotify’s Web Playback SDK documentation also says it is browser-oriented, supports major desktop browsers, and must not be used in commercial projects without Spotify’s prior written approval. BelPet’s implementation account does not establish approval for commercial use, so it should not be read as evidence that distributing a commercial version is permitted. BelPet’s learning curve came from crossing boundaries that a typical game project can avoid. Pixeguy lists learning Godot 4 with C#, REST APIs, OAuth authentication, Spotify’s Web API and Web Playback SDK, communication between C# and a browser SDK, embedding a WebView, native window manipulation, mouse passthrough, and desktop-app packaging.

Making a pet move is only one part: the app also has to authenticate, coordinate a JavaScript SDK with C#, reflect playback state, and interact with the operating system’s window and input model.

Project status and what did not get built
Pixeguy describes BelPet as open source under the MIT License. The creator says they chose not to develop it much further for now because of Spotify’s restrictions. A planned album catalogue for browsing albums or playlists and starting music directly from BelPet was not completed.
That makes BelPet a useful first-project retrospective and architecture example, but not a promise of a currently supported Spotify client. Anyone considering a build should verify Spotify’s current requirements and the project’s current state rather than assuming the original account describes today’s access rules or release availability.
