Bell completed its fibre project to Big and Little Tancook Islands on October 7, 2026, connecting the islands to its network through a submarine cable from the Blandford area. The project brings fibre within reach of about 184 homes and businesses, but residents must check their own address with Bell: the announcement does not establish which locations can order service, or what plans and prices are available.
What Bell built to reach the islands
Bell’s completion announcement describes a subsea connection from the Blandford area, followed by fibre infrastructure on Big and Little Tancook Islands. Bell reports approximately 7 kilometres of submarine cable and an additional 8 kilometres of island fibre infrastructure. The company says the work brings fibre within reach of approximately 184 homes and businesses. Bell’s announcement
The earlier construction update from the Government of Nova Scotia described nearly 6 kilometres of submarine fibre along the ocean floor and about 8 kilometres of aerial fibre on the islands. The releases do not reconcile the different underwater-cable figures, so the project should be described as roughly six to seven kilometres underwater, depending on which announcement is cited—not as a precisely established length. The provincial update said the work required specialized marine equipment, environmental approvals and coordinated construction. Government of Nova Scotia, August 6, 2026
Before the fibre connection, island residents relied on fixed wireless and satellite internet, according to the province and Bell. The province also noted that residents could access its satellite internet rebate program. That historical context does not mean households must buy satellite equipment now or that Bell fibre service includes any particular equipment.

When did the Tancook fibre project happen?
- August 6, 2026: The province said the project would bring high-speed internet to more than 180 homes and businesses and was expected to finish in early fall.
- October 7, 2026: Bell announced that construction was complete, citing approximately 184 homes and businesses within reach of the new connection.
Completion of the network project is not the same as confirmation that every potentially served address can place an order immediately. Bell says internet availability depends on the address; households should verify eligibility directly before making plans.
How the work fits Nova Scotia’s broadband initiative
The Tancook project is part of the Internet for Nova Scotia Initiative, led by Build Nova Scotia. The province established the initiative in 2018 with a $193 million investment for the independent Nova Scotia Internet Funding Trust. In an August 2026 update, it said the trust had invested close to $186 million and leveraged another $197 million from funders, including $146 million from the private sector. These are figures reported by the province. Government of Nova Scotia, August 6, 2026 Government of Nova Scotia, 2018

The province said the broader initiative had extended internet access to more than 103,000 underserved locations across Nova Scotia, with fewer than 500 remaining as of August 6, 2026. It also said the program had helped bring high-speed access to almost 100 per cent of underserved homes and businesses, and that Nova Scotia was believed to be the first Canadian province or territory to reach that level. These are the province’s reported figures and qualified claim, not independently audited totals in the cited announcements. The same August update put combined investment in the South Shore project area, including the Tancook Islands, at about $37 million from the trust, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, Bell, Eastlink and other partners.

- Open Bell’s Internet page and use its availability check.
- Enter the specific island service address you want to verify. Availability is address-dependent, so a nearby connection does not by itself confirm that a particular property can order service.
- Review the plans and terms shown for that address. The Tancook project announcements do not specify island speeds, monthly prices, installation charges, contract terms, data limits or included equipment.
If Bell’s checker does not show service, contact Bell to confirm the address and current availability. Do not assume that the approximately 184 homes and businesses described as within reach are all already orderable.

What the announcements do—and do not—establish
The releases confirm completion of a fibre infrastructure project and its approximate reach. They do not provide a Tancook-specific plan lineup or prove that any particular service tier is available at an individual home or business. For a meaningful comparison, use the details confirmed for the address: availability, download and upload speeds, monthly and installation costs, data limits, contract terms and included equipment.
