Belchertown is pursuing grant funding to demolish three buildings at the former Belchertown State School property, but the Town’s May 2026 update does not name the buildings or confirm that the grant was awarded. The stated aim is to make the site more attractive to developers as redevelopment continues.
What demolition is Belchertown proposing?
In a May 2026 update, the Town said the Belchertown Economic Development and Industrial Corporation (BEDIC) was working with MassDevelopment to apply for a Community One Stop grant. The requested funding would cover demolition of three buildings at the end of a new cul-de-sac on the former State School property. BEDIC chair Beth Maroney said, “This will help make the property more appealing to developers.” (Town of Belchertown, May 2026 update)
The update does not identify the three buildings by name, report that the grant was awarded, or say that demolition has taken place. The proposal is therefore a funding application under consideration, not a confirmed demolition schedule.
How does demolition fit into the site’s redevelopment?
The former State School property is part of Carriage Grove, a planned mixed-use redevelopment. Belchertown and BEDIC entered a development agreement with MassDevelopment in 2012. According to the Town’s May 2026 update, more than $18 million had been secured from various sources since that agreement, while MassDevelopment covers ongoing expenses such as insurance, maintenance, security, and professional fees. The Town also reported that properties at the former State School generated $334,729 in tax revenue for Belchertown in 2024. Removing buildings to improve site readiness is distinct from reusing a building that has a proposed future purpose. The former Tadgell building, for example, is on a separate adaptive-reuse track: the Town has described plans for a mix of business and community uses rather than demolition.
Which buildings are involved—and what is confirmed?
The May 2026 update says only that the three buildings are at the end of a new cul-de-sac. It does not give their names or provide enough detail to identify them reliably. A later update or grant award notice would be needed to establish the buildings covered and the application’s outcome.

Belchertown’s September 19, 2026 update describes a September 10 site tour by Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, State Representative Aaron Saunders, State Senator Jake Oliveira, and Town officials to discuss ongoing redevelopment. The Town separately reported that demolition work at the former State School power plant began in March 2025. That project involved hazardous-material abatement, utility work, demolition, and site restoration. It is prior work on the power plant—not evidence that the three buildings in the later grant proposal have been identified or demolished. (Town of Belchertown, power plant project update)

What the Tadgell grant funds instead
The September 2026 update reports a separate $1,000,000 MVP Action Grant for converting the former Tadgell School into a community resilience hub. That grant is for Tadgell’s reuse and should not be confused with the still-unconfirmed Community One Stop application for demolition. (Town of Belchertown, September 19, 2026 update)
The Town describes the roughly 39,900-square-foot, two-level Tadgell building as a potential home for business suites and shared spaces, a market and pantry, commercial kitchen, youth and recreation rooms, health and counseling services, an emergency shelter, gardens, and outdoor gathering areas. A Town project page says a 2025 assessment found the foundation, floors, and walls sound, while the roof and older building systems need significant work; schematic design presentations were made to the Select Board in June 2026. Does the state capital plan confirm demolition funding?
No. Massachusetts’ FY2026–2030 Capital Investment Plan lists $1,000,000 in total “other funds” for Capital Improvements at Belchertown State School, with the purpose described as cleanup and site readiness. The plan shows zero in its FY2026 and FY2027 annual lines. It does not establish that this money was spent, awarded through Community One Stop, or earmarked for the three proposed demolitions. How residents can follow the proposal
The Town’s May update invites residents to attend BEDIC meetings and share their views. The State School Building and Grounds Committee describes its focus as adaptive reuse of former State School buildings and land, working with town staff and other local bodies. These are relevant forums for tracking the broader site’s future, although the cited updates do not provide a confirmed grant decision or demolition timetable. (Town of Belchertown)
