Start by recording the exact rear-panel model (for example, B1200D-PRO, B1500D-PRO, B1800D-PRO, B1500XP, B1800XP, or passive B1500X), whether it is active or passive, its mains-voltage version, and what changed before the fault appeared. Then identify the symptom and isolate the signal path before assuming the driver or amplifier has failed. A powered subwoofer with a lit Power LED can still have no usable input, incorrect routing, phase cancellation, excessive limiting, or a damaged output stage.

  • Model and series: D-PRO, XP, X, or another version
  • Active (amplifier built in) or passive
  • Country/mains-voltage version and approximate age
  • Sudden or gradual failure; any transport, moisture, impact, or high-level use beforehand
  • Power, Signal, and Clip/Limit LED behavior
  • Source, mixer/controller, cables, and the exact INPUT, THRU, or OUTPUT sockets in use

First, identify the model

Behringer sells materially different subwoofers. The passive B1500X needs an external amplifier and cannot be diagnosed as though it contains powered electronics. Current active models include the B1500XP and B1800XP. Older D-PRO models have different controls, filters, protection circuits, and power specifications.

The B1200D-PRO is an active 12-inch subwoofer with a manufacturer-listed 500-watt Class-D amplifier, 45–180 Hz frequency range, 122 dB maximum SPL at 1 m under its stated test condition, balanced XLR connections, variable 70–150 Hz High Cut, Phase reversal, Bass Boost, and Power, Signal, and Clip indicators. Verify details in the official product information and its model manual; the product page contains legacy wording that conflicts with the 12-inch model description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The B1500D-PRO uses a 15-inch driver and the B1800D-PRO an 18-inch driver. Their manual lists 1,000 W RMS at 6 ohms and 1,400 W peak, 70–150 Hz High Cut, 0°/180° Phase, and a 100 Hz Butterworth, 18 dB-per-octave high-pass on filtered outputs. The same manual gives model-specific frequency-response tolerances and protection details. Do not transfer these figures, fuse ratings, or rear-panel assumptions to another model.

The newer B1500XP and B1800XP pages describe active 15-inch and 18-inch systems using 3,000-watt Class-D amplification, Turbosound transducers, stereo crossover functions, status LEDs, and RMS/peak limiting. “Watts” are not directly comparable when one specification is RMS, another peak, and another an amplifier maximum.

Run the safe five-minute test

  1. Use a known-good wall outlet and the correct IEC power cable. Confirm the rear-panel voltage marking matches the supply.
  2. Disconnect the full-range speakers. Connect one known-good balanced XLR cable from a known-good mixer, controller, interface, or line output to one subwoofer input.
  3. Set Level low, Bass Boost off, Phase to 0°, and High Cut near 80–100 Hz where the model permits that range.
  4. Play a bass-rich recording or low-frequency test signal at moderate source level. Raise the subwoofer Level slowly.
  5. Watch the LEDs. Repeat with the other input, a replacement XLR cable, and the opposite Phase setting. Change only one item at a time.

A single-input test is useful for isolation, but stereo-to-mono summing and permanent single-subwoofer routing vary by source equipment. Check the exact manual before wiring a final mono system.

Read the symptom before changing controls

Symptom Most useful investigation
No Power LED Outlet, IEC cable, switch, correctly rated fuse, internal power supply, or wrong mains version
Power LED on, Signal LED off Muted bus, wrong source output, high-pass filtering upstream, bad cable, or wrong input connector
Signal LED on, no bass Level, filtering, driver, amplifier channel, phase/crossover routing, or protection
Bass weak or hollow Phase cancellation, crossover overlap or gap, placement, or tops connected to the wrong output
Distorted bass Clipped source, excessive Bass Boost, excessive gain, damaged driver, or overloaded amplifier
Clip/Limit constantly illuminated Reduce source level, Level, boost, or bass-heavy EQ; investigate thermal limiting if it continues at moderate level
Hum or buzz Ground loop, unbalanced/poor cable, nearby power interference, or a faulty power supply
Intermittent shutdown or cycling LEDs Thermal, overcurrent, DC, power-supply, loose-connection, or other protection fault
Sub works but tops are silent Thru versus filtered Output choice, bad output cable, or a fault in the top speaker

Check the signal path and outputs

On models with this architecture, INPUT A/B receive the source, THRU A/B pass the incoming signal onward, and filtered OUTPUT A/B feed full-range speakers after the subwoofer’s crossover. The B1200D-PRO documentation states that High Cut affects the filtered Outputs but not Thru signals: Behringer product documentation.

A conventional stereo connection is:

Mixer/controller LEFT → Sub INPUT A
Mixer/controller RIGHT → Sub INPUT B
Sub OUTPUT A → Left full-range speaker
Sub OUTPUT B → Right full-range speaker

Use Thru when you intentionally want an unfiltered feed, but overlapping bass from the tops can then become boomy or cancel at some positions. A lit Signal LED only proves that some signal reaches the electronics; it does not prove that the amplifier and driver produce sound.

Behringer EUROLIVE B1500XP High-Performance Active 3000 Watt PA Subwoofer with 15" Turbosound Speaker and Built-In Stereo Crossover
  • High-performance 3000-Watt powered subwoofer for PA applications
  • World-famous, British engineered 15" TURBOSOUND speaker. Extremely high sound pressure level and incredibly accurate bass
  • Internal switch-mode power supply for noise-free audio, superior transient response and very low power consumption
  • Precise reproduction of ultra-low frequencies for "bulletproof" punch and impact
  • State-of-the-art 3000-Watt Class-D amplifier with comprehensive over-excursion, thermal, RMS and clip limit protection

If a home receiver, phone, or laptop is the source, verify its output level and routing. Consumer RCA or headphone outputs may need a suitable mixer, interface, preamp, or line-level converter. Never connect a speaker-level amplifier output directly to a line input.

Verify that bass exists upstream

  • Disable channel and main-bus high-pass filters temporarily.
  • Check that the signal is the main output, not a muted monitor, booth, or headphone bus.
  • Inspect DJ-controller crossover and room-correction bass-management settings.
  • Confirm the recording or test tone actually contains low-frequency content.
  • Substitute the source output and cable, then test the sub alone.

Set crossover, level, and phase methodically

  1. Begin with Bass Boost off and Level low.
  2. Set High Cut around 80–100 Hz, within the model’s available range. The B1200D-PRO and the B1500D-PRO/B1800D-PRO manuals specify 70–150 Hz controls; the older 15- and 18-inch models also specify a separate 100 Hz high-pass for filtered outputs (B1200D-PRO manual; B1500D-PRO/B1800D-PRO manual).
  3. Bring the source to normal operating level, then raise subwoofer Level until it balances with the tops. Do not raise source, Level, and Bass Boost together.
  4. From the normal audience or listening position, test Phase at 0° and 180°. Keep the setting that gives fuller, tighter bass. Neither position is universally correct; placement, distance, crossover, polarity, and room acoustics determine the result.
  5. If an external DSP or mixer crossover is active, check for a duplicated filter, an overlap, or a frequency gap.

Placement also matters. A wall or corner can increase level while making bass uneven. Moving the sub, centering it, or testing a paired-subwoofer arrangement can reveal an acoustic problem rather than a hardware fault.

Understand the LEDs and protection

  • Power on, Signal off: the unit is powered but is not seeing usable program signal.
  • Signal active, no audible output: investigate Level, filtering, amplifier, driver, or mute/protection behavior.
  • Clip/Limit flashes briefly: peaks are reaching limiting; reduce gain if it occurs often.
  • Clip/Limit stays on: lower source level, Level, Bass Boost, or upstream EQ. Persistent limiting can also indicate thermal stress.
  • Indicators cycle or flash with no audio cable connected: suspect protection or a power fault, not the mixer.

The B1200D-PRO documentation describes short-circuit, open-circuit, and thermal protection. The B1500D-PRO/B1800D-PRO manual describes VCA clipping, short-circuit, thermal, overcurrent, DC, load protection, and turn-on/off muting. LED behavior is not a universal fault-code system, so use the exact model manual rather than interpreting a flash pattern generically.

Isolate the failed component

  1. Test the sub with all tops disconnected.
  2. Replace the wall outlet, IEC cable, XLR cable, source output, and source device one at a time.
  3. Test each subwoofer input separately.
  4. Reconnect one top speaker and cable at a time through the intended filtered Output or Thru path.
  5. Repeat at moderate level, not while the system is already clipping.
  6. Remove all audio cables. If the sub still clicks, overheats, cycles, flashes abnormally, or shuts down, the fault is inside the subwoofer.

A failed driver and a failed amplifier module can produce the same “no sound” symptom without measurement or controlled substitution. A scraping or rubbing cone points toward mechanical driver damage; protection with no input, repeated power loss, burnt odor, smoke, arcing, or loud DC-like cone movement points toward service rather than more setup changes.

Do not cross the repair safety boundary

  • Never replace a fuse with a higher-rated type or bypass a fuse, limiter, or protection circuit.
  • Do not operate the unit on the wrong mains voltage.
  • Do not open the amplifier plate while connected to mains power or touch internal capacitors.
  • Do not install an amplifier module without matching the exact model and voltage version.
  • Do not assume a replacement driver has the correct impedance, sensitivity, excursion, and enclosure compatibility.
  • Stop using a unit that smells burnt, smokes, arcs, rattles severely, or repeatedly trips protection.

The B1500D-PRO/B1800D-PRO documentation specifies region-dependent mains versions and requires the specified fuse type and rating: manual PDF.

When to seek service, repair, or replacement

Arrange professional service if there is no Power LED after checking the outlet and cable, a fuse blows again, protection repeats with no input, the driver is mechanically damaged, output is severely intermittent, or the unit fails when hot. Warranty claims normally begin with the authorized reseller or Music Tribe support process. Prepare the model, serial number, proof of purchase, region, and a concise symptom history; coverage varies by product, region, purchaser, component, and date. See Behringer warranty guidance and the service-center locator.

Repair is usually the first choice when the enclosure and driver are sound, the fault is confined to electronics, or warranty may apply. Replacement becomes reasonable when a quote approaches the cost of a comparable working unit, parts for an old model are unavailable, or several components have failed. An active replacement is convenient but contains a potentially costly amplifier module; a passive B1500X requires a correctly matched external amplifier, DSP, and speaker-level wiring and is not a plug-and-play substitute for a powered D-PRO or XP.

For a replacement, the B1200D-PRO suits compact PA work but its single 12-inch format is not intended for very high sustained output. The B1500XP and B1800XP target larger systems and advertise substantially greater amplifier capacity, while adding transport, room, processing, and budget demands. Current availability and regional specifications should be checked on the official product pages rather than inferred from wattage alone.
