When you tap an icon or click a shortcut, you send a request, not a finished launch. The operating system then prepares a running environment for the app, the app loads the executable code and libraries it depends on, the app runs its own startup code, and finally a first screen is drawn. That first screen can appear before everything the app needs is ready. The exact steps and their order differ between platforms, so the examples below label Apple (iOS) and Windows separately.

The five stages of an app launch

Most launches follow the same broad sequence, even though the details vary by operating system, app framework, and whether the app is already partly running in memory.

  1. The system receives an activation request.
  2. The operating system prepares or starts the process that will run the app.
  3. The loader makes the app’s executable code and required libraries available.
  4. The app runs its own initialization code.
  5. The app draws its first interface, while some work may still be in progress.

Stage 1: The activation request

What counts as a request

The most familiar trigger is a person selecting an app icon. It is not the only one. Windows Universal Windows Platform (UWP) documentation describes activation through a URI (a web-style link that names an app to open) and through a file that is associated with an app. Other system events can also start or wake an app. A double-clicked document that opens in a word processor is therefore a launch request too, even though nobody clicked the app itself.

Stage 2: Preparing the running environment

What a process is

A process is the container the operating system creates for a running program. Microsoft’s Windows process documentation describes a process as owning a virtual address space (its private range of memory addresses), executable code, handles to open system objects, a security context, a unique process identifier, environment variables, priority information, and at least one thread. A thread is a single sequence of instructions the processor can run. Microsoft states that each process starts with one primary thread and can create more.

In short, a process is the organized space in which an app’s code runs. The file on disk is only the program’s instructions; the process is what makes those instructions run in their own protected context.

A new process is not always created

It is a common assumption that every tap starts a brand-new process. That is not reliable across platforms. Apple’s developer documentation says iOS may prewarm an app, meaning it creates the process and loads libraries and then suspends the app before any application code runs. Windows UWP documentation also covers suspension, resumption, and termination, so an app that is already in memory may be brought back to the foreground rather than started from nothing.

Stage 3: Loading code and dependencies

An app rarely runs on its own code alone. It depends on shared libraries and frameworks that provide graphics, networking, and interface controls. Something has to find those pieces and connect them before the app’s code can call them. That job belongs to the loader.

Apple: dyld

Apple’s documentation on reducing launch time describes the dynamic loader, dyld, as the component that loads the app’s executable file. It reads the Mach load commands in that file to find the frameworks and dynamic libraries the app needs, loads them, and resolves dynamic symbols (the named references to functions and data in those libraries). Apple notes that extra third-party frameworks add launch work, because each one must be found, loaded, and linked before the app starts.

Windows: DLL linking

Windows apps commonly use dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). Microsoft describes two ways they are connected. With load-time linking, information in an import library lets the system load the DLL when the program starts and locate its exported functions. With runtime linking, the app loads a DLL while it is running and asks for the addresses of the functions it needs. The first approach makes everything available up front; the second defers the cost until the code actually needs the library.

When a DLL is loaded into a process, Windows calls its entry point, DllMain, during startup. Microsoft advises that this entry point do only simple initialization or cleanup, because heavy work there can delay or destabilize the process.

Stage 4: The app’s own startup code

Once the environment and libraries are in place, control passes to the app. Apple’s launch-sequence documentation places the execution of main() in this part of the process and recommends avoiding expensive work before the main startup path. Work that is not needed for the first screen, such as loading large data sets or contacting servers, is often deferred until after the interface is up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact order of startup callbacks depends on the framework the app is built with. A UWP app, a native iOS app, and a desktop Windows application each have their own startup structure, so the sequence described here should be read as a general pattern rather than a fixed script.

Stage 5: The first screen versus a ready app

Apple’s documentation says that when a user taps an app icon on the Home screen, iOS prepares the app for launch before handing control to the app process. The app then runs code to get ready to draw its interface. Apple also states that the interface can already be visible while the app is still preparing content, or while it replaces a temporary loading interface with its final controls.

This is why a splash screen or spinner should not be read as proof that every feature is ready. It shows that launch is progressing. The screen you can see and the app that can complete your task are separate milestones, and the second can arrive later.

Launch question Apple iOS (documented behavior) Windows (documented behavior)
Who starts the app? iOS prepares the app after a Home screen tap and then hands control to the app process Activation can come from an icon, a URI, a file association, or a system event (UWP documentation)
Can the process be prepared early? Yes, iOS may prewarm an app, creating the process and loading libraries, then suspending it Not stated as prewarming in the sources reviewed; UWP documents suspension and resumption
How libraries are found The dynamic loader reads Mach load commands and loads required frameworks and dynamic libraries Load-time linking through import libraries, or runtime loading with function addresses obtained by the app
Early initialization code Apple advises against expensive work before the main startup path DllMain should do only simple initialization or termination work
First frame versus ready state The interface can be visible while content is still being prepared Depends on the app; no universal first-frame rule is documented in the sources reviewed

  • High Quality PCB: 6-layer PCB made by 2oz thickened copper and server grade level material
  • Dependency loading: many frameworks or libraries must be found, loaded, and linked before the app starts. Apple specifically notes that third-party frameworks add to this cost.
  • Early initialization: work done before the first screen, such as reading large files or setting up services, delays the interface.
  • Process state: a cold start, where nothing is in memory, takes more work than resuming a suspended or prewarmed app.
  • Content loading: an app may show its interface quickly and then spend more time fetching the data you actually need.

These are common contributors, not a ranking. Which one dominates depends on the app, the device, and the state of the system at that moment.

What is and is not established about launch timing

No reliable, published figure for typical app launch time or launch frequency is available from the official sources reviewed, so this article gives no average. Microsoft’s startup-impact thresholds apply to apps that start when you sign in to Windows, not to ordinary apps you open yourself, and should not be used as a general launch measure. Apple mentions MetricKit as a way for developers to measure launch and resume times that users actually experience. Those measurements belong to individual apps and cannot be generalized to everyone’s device.

The principles above are documented for Apple and Windows. Other platforms, such as Linux desktops or Android, follow the same general chain, but their loaders, lifecycle rules, and startup callbacks differ, and they are not covered here.
