Micron’s 256GB LPDRAM is a server memory module, not a consumer RAM upgrade. Announced on March 3, 2026, the SOCAMM2 module uses LPDDR5X and is aimed at data-center systems that need CPU-attached memory capacity with lower power use. Micron said customer samples were shipping at the time; that does not mean the module is generally available to buy.

What is Micron’s 256GB LPDRAM?

It is a 256GB SOCAMM2 module built with LPDDR5X, a low-power DRAM technology associated with mobile devices. Micron says the module uses an industry-first monolithic 32Gb design and targets AI data centers and high-performance computing (HPC). The company announced it on March 3, 2026, and said it was shipping customer samples then. Micron’s announcement also notes that product information and specifications may change.

At 256GB per module, it raises Micron’s stated SOCAMM2 capacity from its previous 192GB offering. Micron also describes configurations reaching 2TB per eight-channel CPU; 2TB is a system configuration figure, not the capacity of one module.

What is SOCAMM2?

SOCAMM2 is a modular, data-center-class form factor for LPDDR5X. It is intended to make low-power DRAM usable as serviceable memory in server architectures, rather than as memory permanently integrated into a consumer device. Micron gives the module’s area as 14 × 90 mm and says the modular design supports serviceability, scalability and liquid-cooled server architectures. These design and compatibility claims come from Micron; the actual fit depends on a server platform designed to support SOCAMM2.

Why put LPDRAM in an AI data center?

AI workloads can keep model parameters, user context and intermediate data active while handling requests. As those demands grow, system designers have to balance memory capacity, bandwidth, responsiveness and energy use. Micron’s case for LPDDR5X in servers is that it can provide CPU-attached capacity with a focus on power efficiency in supported designs—not that one memory type is best for every task.

Memory technologies occupy different places in a system. In Micron’s framing, HBM sits close to accelerators for high bandwidth; SOCAMM2 can provide CPU-attached capacity and power efficiency; DDR5 remains a broad server-memory option; and SSDs serve storage tiers. Those roles are complementary, and the useful combination depends on the workload and platform. Micron’s overview of the AI memory hierarchy discusses these trade-offs; it is the company’s framing, not an independent market comparison.

What do Micron’s performance claims show?

The figures below are claims reported by Micron in its March 3, 2026 announcement, not independently verified measurements. Each result depends on its stated comparison or test conditions and should not be assumed to apply to other models, platforms, configurations or production deployments.

Claim What Micron compared or tested What the figure does—and does not—establish
One-third the power consumption One 128GB, 128-bit SOCAMM2 module versus two 64GB, 64-bit DDR5 RDIMMs. A result for this specified comparison; it is not a universal power ratio for all LPDDR5X and DDR5 server configurations.
One-third the footprint SOCAMM2 area is stated as 14 × 90 mm; the comparison is with a standard server RDIMM. A form-factor comparison, not evidence that a complete server or system occupies one-third the space.
2.3× faster time to first token Micron’s internal Llama 3 70B inference test used FP16 quantization, a 500,000-token context and 16 concurrent users. It reported 0.12 seconds with 2TB LPDRAM per CPU versus 0.28 seconds with 1.5TB LPDRAM per CPU, in a long-context inference scenario using KV-cache offload. The reported result applies to that test and those unequal memory capacities; it does not establish the same gain for other models, context lengths or deployments.
More than 3× better performance per watt Micron’s internal comparison used the Pot3D solar-physics HPC code on identical LPDDR5X and DDR5 capacities in standalone CPU applications. A result for that application and test setup, not a general performance-per-watt rating across HPC workloads.

The distinctions matter: power and footprint refer to specific comparisons, while the inference result compares different LPDRAM capacities per CPU. None of these figures, by itself, establishes how a particular server will perform after deployment.

  • CHECK YOUR CONFIG — Server and motherboard memory support varies by model. Consult your system or motherboard manual for supported capacities, approved DIMM population order, and installation steps before purchase.
  • LIFETIME SUPPORT — Backed by a lifetime replacement warranty and free US-based technical support.

Is it a consumer RAM upgrade?

No. Micron presents SOCAMM2 as data-center hardware and describes customer sampling, technical enablement and system-design engagement—not a general retail product. It is not interchangeable with laptop LPDDR or consumer LPCAMM memory. A server must support the SOCAMM2 form factor, so a 256GB capacity figure alone does not make the module suitable for an existing computer.

What is known about Micron’s ecosystem work?

Micron says it is collaborating with NVIDIA on memory co-design for advanced AI infrastructure and contributes to defining the JEDEC SOCAMM2 specification. Those are company-reported ecosystem activities, not guarantees that every NVIDIA-based server supports the module. Raj Narasimhan, Micron’s senior vice president and general manager of its Cloud Memory Business Unit, described the announcement as aimed at CPU-attached memory for AI and HPC; NVIDIA’s Ian Finder said advanced AI infrastructure requires optimization across system layers. Both statements appeared in Micron’s release and reflect vendor and partner perspectives.
