A statement that your chats won’t train an AI model answers only one question. It does not tell you whether your text is stored, who can read it, how long it persists, or whether deleting it removes every copy. Before you share anything sensitive with an AI assistant, identify the exact product and account you are using, check its current settings, and read its retention terms. Provider pages change, so confirm the wording before relying on it. Deleting a chat or switching off a setting reduces exposure, but neither makes what you share completely private.
Four promises that get mixed up
Privacy language around AI tools often blends several separate commitments. Each one covers a different part of what happens to your content.

Step 1: Identify the product and account type
The same company can apply different terms to different products. Establish which surface you are using before you assess any privacy claim.

Terms and settings for personal accounts are the most likely to allow content to be used for model improvement, depending on the controls you have selected.
- Business, Enterprise, Edu, or Healthcare workspaces, and the API platform. OpenAI says content from these products is not used for model improvement by default, although organizations may opt in where that option is available.
- Work or school accounts. If an employer or school manages the account, an administrator’s policy may govern retention, access, and data use in addition to the provider’s terms.
- Connectors and integrations. Documents or data pulled in through a connector may be handled differently from text you paste into a prompt. Product documentation is the only reliable guide here.
Model-improvement defaults and controls
Whether your content can improve a model depends on the product, the account, and the setting you have chosen. The table summarizes what the cited provider pages say. Both pages are provider documents, and the wording of controls changes, so check the current help text for your own account.

The OpenAI description comes from its consumer-services help page, which is not dated in the material this article relies on. Confirm its current wording before you act on it.
Retention and deletion
Deletion limits differ by provider, and each provider states exceptions. Use the table as a starting point, then read the current retention section for the product you use.

What switching off a setting does not do
Anthropic’s retention FAQ says that turning off model improvement does not remove data from training already underway or from models already trained. Its March 16, 2026 FAQ also says that feedback submissions may retain the related conversation for up to five years. A toggle changes future use; it does not reach back to content already processed.
Who can access what you share
Access is the part of privacy most often left out of short summaries. Each provider describes it differently.

- OpenAI describes limited authorized personnel and trusted service providers who access content for purposes the help page lists. It also advises users not to enter sensitive information they would not want reviewed or used.
- Anthropic describes safety review as a circumstance in which a conversation may be used for model improvement, even if you did not otherwise opt in.
Private modes have a defined scope
Incognito-style modes are useful for narrowing one kind of use, but their scope is specific. Anthropic states that Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, while its FAQ separately describes safety-review circumstances. Do not assume a private mode in one product applies to other products, to exceptions for safety or legal reasons, or to any AI service that is not described in that provider’s documents.
What US regulators have said
In January 2024, staff in the Federal Trade Commission’s Office of Technology published “AI Companies: Uphold Your Privacy and Confidentiality Commitments.” The post says model-as-a-service companies must honor commitments made in promotional materials, terms, or marketplaces. It warns that using or retaining consumer data for other purposes without clear and conspicuous notice and affirmative express consent may risk violating the law, and it notes that material omissions may matter. The staff wrote: “There is no AI exemption from the laws on the books.” This is US regulator guidance, not a legal conclusion about every provider or jurisdiction.

What earlier policy analysis found
A 2025 paper by Jennifer King, Kevin Klyman, Emily Capstick, Tiffany Saade, and Victoria Hsieh analyzed privacy materials for six US frontier AI developers. At the time of that analysis, each developer used chatbot inputs for model training by default, and the policies often lacked essential information. Treat this as a dated snapshot. Anthropic’s later consumer documentation describes user-controlled model improvement and safety-review exceptions, so the 2025 result should not be read as a current universal rule. The paper also reports a separate finding about children’s chat data for four of the six developers. That is a dated policy-analysis result rather than a present-day, provider-by-provider statement.

A pre-share checklist
- Confirm the product and account type. If an employer or school manages the account, ask the administrator which policy applies.
- Find the data-use or model-improvement control in your account settings. Labels vary and change, so match them to the provider’s current help text.
- Read the retention section for your product, including what happens after deletion and which exceptions apply.
- Check whether connectors, uploads, images, voice, or feedback will send content in a different way from a typed prompt.
- Remove names, account numbers, addresses, and unique case details, and replace specifics with general descriptions. This reduces risk; it does not guarantee privacy.
- Do not share content you would not want reviewed, retained for the stated periods, or used in de-identified training form, unless you have confirmed that the product’s terms accept that use.
