Before buying an Amazon Echo, decide whether you want a speaker or a screen, check the setup requirements, and consider how you feel about microphones, cloud voice history, and—on Echo Show models—cameras. Echo models differ in features and controls, so compare the exact generation rather than choosing by product name alone.
1. Choose a speaker or a screen first
Amazon’s Echo family includes speaker-only models such as Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and Echo Studio, as well as screen-equipped Echo Show devices and Echo Hub. Amazon’s Echo setup directory lists these device families.
A speaker is the simpler fit if you mainly want voice interaction and audio. Choose a screen only if you expect to use its visual features; some screen models also have cameras and camera-dependent functions that may affect your decision.
Speaker-only models
Compare speaker models by their exact generation and the features you need. Echo Dot Max is one current model named in Amazon’s setup guidance, but the available support information does not establish that it has the best sound, responsiveness or value. Check the current listing and local availability before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Echo Show and other screen devices
A screen can make sense when you want visual information or camera-related features. For example, Amazon’s setup guidance covers the Echo Show 8 (2025 release). Check the precise model’s camera controls and supported features before deciding that a screen is right for you.
2. Know what setup requires
Amazon’s Echo Dot Max setup instructions call for the device and its power adapter, an Amazon account, and your Wi-Fi network name and password. The instructions direct you to use the Alexa app to complete setup. Requirements and steps can vary by model, so use the instructions for the Echo you buy.

3. Understand what Amazon says happens to voice recordings
Amazon says Echo devices are designed to detect the wake word you choose. According to Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs, once the wake word is detected, the device starts recording audio and sends it to the cloud; the recording can include a fraction of a second before the wake word. Amazon also says users can review or delete voice history.
This describes Amazon’s account of how Echo devices work; it is not an independent audit. If you use Alexa, consider whether that account of wake-word detection and cloud processing fits your privacy preferences, and review the voice-history controls available to you.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
4. Know what the microphone-off button does
Amazon says pressing the microphone-off button disconnects microphone power and turns on a red light. While the microphone is off, the Echo cannot respond to voice commands. Amazon’s instructions are available in Turn Your Echo Device’s Microphones On or Off.
This physical control is useful if you want a direct way to stop voice responses. The tradeoff is straightforward: hands-free voice commands are unavailable until you turn the microphone back on.

5. Check camera controls on the exact Echo Show
Camera features and controls vary by Echo Show model. Amazon says the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release) use their cameras for functions including Live View, Drop In and Visual ID. Disabling the camera affects camera-dependent features, including Live View. See Amazon’s pages on enabling or disabling the camera and Echo Show camera settings.
Do not assume every Echo Show has the same camera controls. For example, Amazon’s setup guide for the Echo Show 5 (3rd Generation) describes a built-in camera shutter. Before buying, check whether your exact model has a physical shutter or an electronic camera control—and whether turning the camera off disables a feature you want.

6. Verify accessibility support and the exact generation
Amazon’s Echo Show 8 (2025 release) setup guidance lists accessibility features including Tap to Alexa, captioning, screen magnifier and VoiceView. If you rely on a particular feature, confirm that it is supported on the specific Echo generation and software configuration you plan to use; a feature listed for one model should not be assumed to apply to every Echo.
Compare the model details that matter to you
Once you know whether you want a speaker or a screen, compare candidate devices on the details that can change everyday use:
- Form factor: speaker-only or screen-equipped.
- Camera: whether it has one, how it can be disabled or covered, and which functions stop working when it is off.
- Generation and accessibility: the exact model year or generation and support for the accessibility features you need.
- Local price and availability: check current listings for your region. The cited Amazon support pages do not establish current prices or retail availability.
Those support pages also do not establish which Echo sounds best, responds fastest or offers the best value. Treat those as questions to verify with evidence for the exact models you are considering, rather than assuming a winner from the product names.
