If your mouse feels wrong, check what is actually bothering you before replacing it: pointer speed, accuracy during slow movements, scrolling, button orientation, or cursor visibility. Windows has settings for each of these, and changing the relevant one may solve the problem without a new mouse.

Where to find mouse settings in Windows

In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse. In Windows 10, Microsoft’s documented path is Settings > Devices > Mouse. Some options are under Additional mouse settings in Windows 11 or Additional mouse options in Windows 10. Labels and paths may vary by release; Microsoft’s Change mouse settings page documents the available controls.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. If you still use it, see Microsoft’s support information as well as the settings instructions.

Adjust pointer speed if the cursor feels too fast or slow

Use the Mouse pointer speed slider in the Mouse settings page to change how quickly the pointer moves. Make a small adjustment, then try the mouse in the task where its speed felt wrong. A speed mismatch alone does not show that the hardware needs replacing.

Try pointer precision for slow movements

In Additional mouse settings, open the pointer options and try switching Enhance pointer precision on. Microsoft describes this as a way to make the pointer more accurate when the mouse is moving slowly. Treat it as an option to compare with your current setting, not a guaranteed improvement for every person or task.

Change wheel scrolling when pages move too far or too little

Mouse settings include controls for how far the wheel scrolls and for horizontal scrolling. Adjust the scroll amount to suit how you read or navigate, then test it in the apps and documents you use most. Horizontal scrolling applies only if the mouse supports it.

Make the pointer easier to see

Change pointer appearance

For a cursor that is hard to spot, open Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch. The appearance options let you adjust the pointer’s visibility. These controls affect how the pointer is displayed, not the mouse’s physical performance. See Microsoft’s accessibility guidance for mouse and keyboard input for more details.

Use pointer trails or locate the pointer with CTRL

In Additional mouse settings, the pointer options include behaviors such as showing pointer trails, hiding the pointer while typing, and showing its location when you press CTRL. Try the options that address your specific visibility problem; for example, hiding the pointer while typing is useful only if it is the disappearing cursor that bothers you.

Use the keyboard to move the pointer with Mouse Keys

Mouse Keys is an accessibility feature that lets you move the pointer using the keyboard. It provides an alternate way to control the pointer; it does not make a mouse more accurate or improve its hardware. Microsoft’s input-device accessibility guide covers this and related options.

Decide whether a replacement mouse is still worth considering

Change one relevant setting at a time and test it in your normal workflow. If the problem persists, hardware may still be worth comparing for factors such as comfort, button layout, scrolling, compatibility, or accessibility needs. Windows settings can help address configuration and visibility issues, but they cannot establish whether a particular mouse is a good fit for you.
