Choose beehiiv if you want a newsletter business with growth, analytics, segmentation, advertising, and monetization tools; choose Substack if you want to publish across formats and lean on its paid subscriptions, reader app, and community features. Those are differences in what each service emphasizes—not evidence that either one will make a newsletter more engaging or grow it faster. The better fit depends on your publishing workflow, audience, required features, and willingness to pay through a subscription or a share of paid revenue.

How beehiiv and Substack differ

Both services support newsletter publishing and paid subscriptions, but they present different ways to run a publication. beehiiv emphasizes a configurable newsletter operation and business tools. Substack emphasizes a reader-facing network and community, alongside publishing formats beyond newsletters.

Decision beehiiv Substack What to weigh
Pricing model Tiered subscription plans; beehiiv advertises 0% platform fees on paid subscriptions. Its pricing page lists paid plans starting at $49/month. See current beehiiv pricing. Free to start; Substack’s comparison page describes a 10% share of paid subscription revenue. See Substack’s comparison. Compare total cost against expected paid subscribers, revenue, and required features. Recheck current terms before calculating a break-even point.
Growth and analytics tools Its materials emphasize analytics, segmentation, referrals, advertising, and monetization tools; availability can depend on plan. Explore beehiiv features. Lists subscriber and post analytics; its comparison emphasizes audience network and community discovery. Review Substack’s comparison. Decide whether you need operational campaign tools or prefer the service’s reader and community experience.
Publishing formats Newsletter and website publishing, with customization and related creator tools. Articles and newsletters, as well as podcasts, video, static pages, and other post types. See Substack features. Choose formats you will actually create and maintain consistently.
Audience experience Positioned as a configurable newsletter publication and business platform. Positioned around its reader app, network, and community features. Consider whether your priorities are publication controls or an integrated reader environment; neither positioning guarantees engagement.
Moving between services Substack lists beehiiv among its supported import sources. Substack describes import support, but the precise transfer behavior for subscriber records, posts, and other data is not established here. Check Substack’s import information. Confirm what transfers and what the workflow requires before moving a live publication.

Which platform should you choose?

Consider beehiiv for a growth-oriented newsletter operation

beehiiv is the more natural fit to investigate if your work depends on newsletter-business tools such as analytics, subscriber segmentation, referrals, advertising, or monetization. Its official materials emphasize these capabilities, but they do not establish that using them will produce audience growth. Check the plan details for each feature you need: not every capability is necessarily available on every tier.

Consider Substack for a publication with multiple formats and community features

Substack is worth considering if you want to combine newsletters with formats such as podcasts or video, offer paid subscriptions, and use its reader app and community features. Those are product features and positioning, not independent proof that readers will discover, open, or engage with your work.

Compare both more closely when your requirements are specialized

If you need complex marketing automation, a particular integration, unusual data portability, or a specific payment setup, verify those requirements directly before choosing. The available product descriptions do not establish all such details for both services.

Compare the real cost, not just the headline price

beehiiv’s pricing page lists paid plans starting at $49 per month and says all plans, including Launch, include unlimited email sends. It also describes differences between Scale and Max; Max adds capabilities such as removing beehiiv branding and supporting more publications. These are current plan details, not permanent terms, so check beehiiv’s pricing page for the latest eligibility and prices.

Substack’s comparison page describes a free-to-start model and a 10% share of paid subscription revenue. That percentage is a vendor-published description, not a complete cost calculation. Confirm current fees and payment terms before estimating what you would keep from subscriptions; do not assume that the platform share is the only possible charge. Check Substack’s current comparison.

For a useful comparison, estimate your expected paid-subscriber revenue and identify the features you need. Then calculate the cost under each service’s current terms. A subscription price and a revenue share affect creators differently as paid revenue changes, while plan eligibility may determine whether a platform’s advertised tools are available to you.

Will either service make your newsletter more engaging?

Neither platform’s feature list establishes that it will make a newsletter engaging. The subject, writing, publishing cadence, audience fit, and promotion also matter, and the available evidence does not quantify their effects. Treat the platforms’ claims about growth and discovery as descriptions of their products, not outcome guarantees.

Instead, select the environment that supports the work you intend to do: the formats you will publish, the tools you will use, and the audience experience you want to offer. Then evaluate engagement using your own audience’s response rather than assuming a platform feature will deliver it.

What to check before moving a newsletter

Substack says it supports imports from beehiiv and names beehiiv among its supported sources. That does not, by itself, confirm which records or publication content will transfer in your particular move. Before switching, check the current import instructions and establish what happens to subscriber records, posts, and any other data you need. Avoid committing to a migration until you understand the steps and limits.
