Beed MP Bajrang Sonwane alleged that mobile phones were being used rampantly inside Beed District Jail and that political conspiracies were being hatched from behind bars. Prison authorities rejected the charges as baseless. A Hindustan Times report published October 3, 2026, recounts both sides but does not independently establish whether unauthorized calls were made.
What Sonwane alleged
Sonwane said Walmik Karad, lodged in Beed District Jail and described in the report as a key accused in the murder of Massajog sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, was calling from prison to frame Sonwane’s son, Saurabh Sonwane, in a criminal case.
At a press conference, Sonwane played what he described as an old audio recording in support of his claim. The report characterizes it as a purported recording and provides no authentication of its origin or contents; it therefore cannot be treated as independent confirmation of the allegation.

Authorities rejected Sonwane’s claims and said two prior high-level inquiries had found no irregularities in prison operations. The report does not include the inquiry documents or explain their methods, so their findings cannot be independently assessed from the account.

Beed District Jail Superintendent Rajaram Chandane said: “The allegations are devoid of facts. Inquiries have already taken place into this matter, and we are ready to face any further probe. The entire facility is under CCTV coverage.”
Safeguards officials cited
Officials described the following monitoring and calling arrangements. These are their accounts as reported by Hindustan Times/PTI, not independently audited findings:
Rank #2
- UNSURPASSED RANGE: Experience the best in long-range coverage and clarity, provided by a unique antenna design and advances in noise-filtering technology
- ANSWERING SYSTEM: This reliable cordless system includes a digital answering machine that can record up to 22 minutes of incoming messages, outgoing announcements and memos, and a voice-guide for easier set up
- SMART CALL BLOCKER & CALLER ID ANNOUNCE: Say goodbye to unwanted calls. Robocalls on your landline are automatically blocked from ever ringing through - even the first time. You can also permanently blacklist any number you want with one touch on the dedicated key on the handset. The call block directory can store up to 1,000 name and number entries. Plus, the handset announces the name of the caller, so you can decide to answer the call or block it - screening calls has never been easier
- LARGE 2-INCH SCREEN, BIG TEXT, LIGHTED KEY PAD: High-contrast text on the extra-large 2 inch screen makes it easy to read incoming caller ID or call history records. Plus, the enlarged font and extra-large and lighted handset keypad allows for easy dialing in low-light conditions. This feature is helpful for those who are visually impaired
- HANDSET SPEAKERPHONE, AUDIO ASSIST, INTERCOM: This cordless system has built-in full-duplex speakerphone on handset allowing both ends to speak - and be heard - at the same time for conversations that are more true to life. Also designed with useful features like Audio Assist and handset intercom to help make your daily communications enjoyable
- CCTV coverage: Officials said the jail has 106 cameras. They said Barrack No. 9, where Karad is held, is monitored around the clock by 8 to 12 high-tech cameras.
- Supervised calling booths: Officials said an officer and two staff members oversee the booths. Inmates may call three police-verified relatives for up to 10 minutes per call, three times a week.
- Conference-call restrictions: An official said 90 percent of the calling system had been upgraded to Android-based terminals that block multi-party conference calls. Officials described this as addressing an earlier loophole in which relatives could bridge third parties into a call.
- Shared barracks: Officials said a barrack houses 50 to 55 inmates and argued that unauthorized calls were “practically impossible.”
What is—and is not—established
The report presents a dispute: Sonwane’s allegation of calls to frame his son, supported by a recording he says is relevant, and authorities’ denial alongside their account of earlier inquiries and security measures. It does not provide an authenticated recording, independent corroboration of the alleged calls, or inquiry reports. The allegations should therefore remain attributed to Sonwane, and the safeguards and inquiry results attributed to officials.
