If you’re choosing between the Beats Studio Pro and Sony WH-1000XM5, the Sony WH-1000XM5 is the stronger default buy for noise cancellation, calls, app-based sound customization, and pairing with multiple devices. Choose the Beats Studio Pro if USB-C lossless listening, Beats’ sound profile, or quick pairing across Apple and Android devices matters more to you. Battery life is close in one independent test, and neither pair is a universal comfort winner.
At a glance: Beats Studio Pro vs. Sony WH-1000XM5
| What matters | Beats Studio Pro | Sony WH-1000XM5 |
|---|---|---|
| Noise cancellation | Adaptive ANC and Transparency mode, according to Beats. | Favored overall in the comparisons from RTINGS and SoundGuys. |
| Wired and wireless audio | USB-C lossless audio and a 3.5 mm input, according to Beats. | Bluetooth SBC, AAC, and LDAC; SoundGuys also reports 3.5 mm cable support. |
| Advertised battery life | Up to 40 hours; Fast Fuel is rated for up to four hours of playback from a 10-minute charge. | Up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on, or up to 40 hours with it off, according to Sony’s specifications. |
| Measured battery life | 31 hours, 25 minutes in SoundGuys’ standardized test. | 31 hours, 53 minutes in the same SoundGuys test. |
| Calls and sound controls | RTINGS finds weaker microphone performance than Sony and fewer sound-customization advantages. | RTINGS favors Sony for microphone performance and in-app sound customization. |

| Current price | Varies by retailer and region; check current local offers. | Varies by retailer and region; check current local offers. |
The advertised runtimes use different noise-cancelling conditions, so they are not a direct head-to-head test. SoundGuys’ result is a single outlet’s measurement under its test conditions, not a promise of how long either pair will last in your use.
Which headphones have better noise cancellation?
The Sony WH-1000XM5 is the safer pick if reducing outside noise is your top priority. RTINGS favors Sony’s ANC overall. SoundGuys describes Sony’s advantage as slight in passive and active noise reduction in the mid and high ranges. Neither comparison establishes a decibel difference that applies to every situation, and the seal around your ears, fit, and surroundings affect what you hear.

That is a manufacturer description of its feature, not evidence that it cancels more noise than Sony. Both models also offer a transparency mode for hearing more of your surroundings.

How do their sound and connection options differ?
Choose Beats for USB-C lossless audio
The Studio Pro supports lossless audio over USB-C and also has a 3.5 mm input, according to Beats. Those wired options can be useful when you want to connect directly to a compatible source rather than listen over Bluetooth. USB-C audio requires a suitable connection and source; the presence of the port alone does not make every device or app deliver lossless audio.
Choose Sony for LDAC Bluetooth
The WH-1000XM5 supports SBC, AAC, and LDAC Bluetooth codecs. LDAC can carry higher-bitrate audio than the baseline codecs when both the headphones and source device support it and the connection conditions allow. That is a different listening path from Beats’ USB-C lossless mode; neither feature proves one headphone will sound better to every listener.

Sound preference is personal
SoundGuys favors the Beats tuning for many listeners and notes its onboard sound profiles are USB-only. It describes the Sony sound as bass-emphasized, while RTINGS highlights Sony’s more granular app EQ. These are review judgments, not universal preferences. If possible, audition both; otherwise consider whether you want Beats’ tuning or the option to shape Sony’s sound more precisely in its app.

The headline manufacturer figures differ by operating mode. Beats advertises up to 40 hours for Studio Pro, while Sony lists up to 30 hours with noise cancelling enabled and up to 40 hours with it off. Sony’s help material also distinguishes runtime by codec, so actual play time depends on settings and use.

In SoundGuys’ standardized test, the Beats Studio Pro ran for 31 hours and 25 minutes; the Sony WH-1000XM5 ran for 31 hours and 53 minutes. That small gap makes battery life a weak reason to choose between them based on this test alone. It does not guarantee those runtimes in everyday use.
Which is better for calls, app controls, and pairing?
Sony is the more convincing choice if you regularly take calls or want more control over sound. RTINGS’ comparison favors the WH-1000XM5’s microphone performance and in-app sound customization. The Studio Pro may still suit you if its tuning is already to your taste and you do not need as much EQ adjustment.

Pairing depends on your device mix. RTINGS reports quick pairing for Beats on both iOS and Android, and USB-C compatibility with PlayStation. It reports multi-device pairing for Sony, as well as quick pairing on Android. If you often switch between two devices, Sony’s reported multi-device support is the more relevant distinction; if fast setup across Apple and Android devices is your priority, Beats remains a credible option.
Which is more comfortable?
Beats markets UltraPlush ear cushions and an adjustable headband for extended listening. That does not establish that the Studio Pro is more comfortable than Sony for everyone. Head shape, glasses, clamping pressure, and heat tolerance can all change the experience. Try the fit for yourself where practical, especially if you plan to wear either pair for long sessions.
