BBC director-general Matt Brittin reportedly said someone sent him a 50-minute AI-generated episode of Doctor Who, which he described as “pretty good.” That account does not establish that the BBC made, commissioned, approved or plans to release it.
What did Matt Brittin say about the AI-generated Doctor Who episode?
Variety reported on September 29, 2026, that Brittin made the remarks during a conversation at the Royal Television Society conference in London. The report quotes him as saying: “Somebody sent me a 50-minute episode of ‘Doctor Who’ that was AI-generated the other day. It’s pretty good.” Read the report as republished by KhanList.
The quoted 50-minute length is Brittin’s description, not independently verified episode metadata. The report gives no details about the work’s plot, creator, cast or production tools. It also does not describe a formal review process; it says Brittin was sent the episode and briefly gave his reaction.
Did the BBC make or approve the episode?
The report does not say that the BBC produced, commissioned, approved or intends to release the episode. It says only that someone sent it to Brittin. The sender and the work’s status are not identified, so it should not be treated as an official BBC episode or announcement.

Futurism also repeated the central account, adding its own criticism. That commentary is not evidence of who made the episode or whether the BBC endorsed it. Read Futurism’s report.
What did Brittin say about AI and human creativity?
In the same reported conference conversation, Brittin was quoted as saying: “I mean, it’s not going to replace humans, and we’ll come on to that. So everyone’s a creator. Not all the creativity is bad.” These are remarks attributed to him in the news report, not a detailed or formal BBC policy statement about AI.
Is this connected to a future Doctor Who production?
No connection is established. Radio Times has separately reported on a BBC tender for future Doctor Who episodes with a view to transmission in 2028/29. That commissioning context does not identify the AI-generated work Brittin described or show that it is part of an official production. Read the Radio Times report.

- Who created or sent the episode.

- Its plot, cast and whether it used existing performers or generated new ones.
- Whether it has been released or will be released.
The available account does not include an original RTS recording or transcript, and no BBC statement specifically about this episode was identified. Without those details, claims about its provenance, production method or release plans go beyond what has been reported.
