For most existing Android phones, removing the battery is not a practical way to make a battery-free kiosk. A removable battery means it can be replaced; it does not mean the manufacturer supports running the phone without one. For a simple kiosk, keep the supported battery installed and configure the phone for managed, plugged-in operation. For fixed-power use where battery stress is a concern, Samsung documents a No Battery Mode for Galaxy Tab Active3 and later rugged tablets—not for arbitrary phones.
What “battery-free Android” means in practice
Android can support products designed to run from external power without an internal battery. That is a device-design and integration case, not a general promise that a retail phone will work after its battery is removed. A phone’s power circuitry and firmware are selected by its manufacturer; unless that exact model’s documentation supports battery-out operation, treat the modification as unsupported.
For Android 9 and later, the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) describes the default state when no battery is detected: battery present is false, status is unknown, remaining capacity is 0, health is unknown, and AC-charger online status is not modified. The framework continues to treat the device as charging from external power, avoids shutdown for low battery, and schedules work that requires charging or good battery health. AOSP recommends accurately reporting external power through a Linux power_supply class driver or Health HAL. This is implementation guidance for device builders, not evidence that a particular phone will boot without its battery. AOSP: Support batteryless devices
Choose a setup based on the job
| Project need | Practical option | What it does—and does not—solve |
|---|---|---|
| Existing phone used as a basic kiosk | Keep its supported battery installed; use compatible external power and managed kiosk settings. | Supports kiosk and screen-on configuration, but does not make the phone batteryless. |
| Fast battery replacement or spare rotation | Select an exact model with an officially documented user-replaceable battery. | Makes battery replacement simpler; does not establish battery-out operation or suitability for indefinite unattended charging. |
| Fixed-power installation where battery stress is a concern | Consider a Galaxy Tab Active3 or later Galaxy Tab Active tablet with Samsung’s documented No Battery Mode. | Provides a documented fixed-power option for supported tablets; it is not a general Android phone feature. |
| Custom product that must contain no battery | Build and integrate the hardware and firmware for batteryless operation using AOSP guidance. | Requires device-level engineering, including accurate external-power reporting. |
Set up a conventional Android phone as a kiosk
Android Enterprise defines dedicated devices as fully managed devices for a specific purpose, including customer-facing kiosks and digital signage. Lock-task mode can keep a device within approved apps. For a managed phone, the basic approach is to leave its supported battery installed, provide the manufacturer-compatible power arrangement, and configure kiosk and screen-on behavior.

See Android Developers: Dedicated devices cookbook. - Plan for unplugging and recovery. The cookbook recommends monitoring charging state; an administrator can be alerted if the device is unplugged. Set up remote monitoring and a recovery procedure appropriate to the deployment.
- Test the whole installation before relying on it. Verify boot and recovery after power loss, app restart behavior, network recovery, screen duty cycle, mounting and cable strain, ambient temperature, and remote monitoring. These are deployment checks, not results established for any specific phone model.
Samsung’s documented fixed-power option is a tablet
Samsung Knox documents No Battery Mode for Galaxy Tab Active3 and higher models. Its Knox Manage instructions specify enabling the related device controls and the “Enable No Battery Mode” policy through the Knox Service Plugin. Samsung says the policy limits CPU usage and helps devices operate safely during extended use on fixed continuous power, while helping prevent battery swelling. How to enable No Battery Mode · Samsung Knox: Device settings
Before buying, verify that the exact model, software, Knox management configuration, and region support the mode. The documentation covers rugged tablets; it does not establish that No Battery Mode works on ordinary Android phones.

What removable batteries are good for
A removable battery is chiefly a serviceability advantage: you can power down, unplug, replace a worn pack, or rotate in a charged spare. Follow the exact device’s instructions and use compatible batteries and chargers. For example, HMD’s 105 (2024) guide says to switch off and unplug a removable-battery device before removing its cover or battery, use an original rechargeable battery, and avoid metal objects that could short the contacts. It also says not to attempt removal on devices with non-removable batteries. HMD 105 (2024): Battery and charger information
Removable-battery phones have been uncommon in recent smartphone sales, but the available statistic is historical, not a current inventory: the European Commission’s 2023 impact assessment says fewer than 10% of mobile phones released to market in 2019 had user-replaceable batteries, and none of the best-selling smartphone models in Europe that year did. The assessment notes that easy-to-remove batteries were commonplace in feature phones but not smartphones and tablets. European Commission impact assessment (2023)

Plan maintenance for long-running deployments
Always-on power does not remove the need to manage heat, batteries, screens, power interruptions, networks, and app recovery. One 2018 field study reports experience from a single, modest PlugWatch deployment in hot, humid Zanzibar: among 16 Samsung J110H phones, eight had visibly swollen batteries and ten showed some degree of screen burn-in. The authors also estimated downtime at approximately 8% of total deployment time across their 142-day deployment. These are study-specific observations, not failure rates or reliability estimates for current Android phones or other environments.
