On October 2, 2024, Bank of America customers reported being unable to sign in or view account information; some who accessed online or mobile banking saw balances displayed as $0, dashes, unavailable, or stuck on the previous day’s figures. The bank said the technology issue was resolved that evening. A spokesperson said it was not related to a cyberattack, but the technical cause was not disclosed. A blank or zero display during the incident did not, by itself, show that money had been taken from an account.

What happened during the Bank of America outage?

The disruption affected access to online and mobile banking on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. Customers reported sign-in failures and trouble retrieving account lists, alongside missing or misleading balance information. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reproduced messages saying, “Some accounts and/or balances are temporarily unavailable” and “We are temporarily unable to retrieve all your accounts.” Other customers described seeing zero balances, dashes, or figures from the prior day.

Outage reports began shortly after noon Eastern time. CBS News said DownDetector had received about 5,000 reports by 3 p.m.; Banking Dive later reported that reports peaked at more than 19,200 complaints at 1:25 p.m. ET and tapered after 8 p.m. Those are reports made to an outage-monitoring service, not verified counts of unique customers or affected accounts.

The Los Angeles Times reported that more than 20,000 customers were affected, but also said the bank had not provided its own impact count. Treat that figure as a reported estimate, not a confirmed Bank of America total. The incident was widespread, but available reporting does not establish that every customer was affected.

Why did some balances show $0 or disappear?

The reports document an access and balance-information problem, but do not explain its technical root cause. Bank of America initially said some clients were having trouble accessing accounts and balance information, and that the issues had largely been resolved. Later, spokesperson Matthew Card told the Los Angeles Times, “These technology issues have been fully resolved.” Banking Dive reported that the bank declined to specify what caused the disruption.

Card also said the glitch was not related to a cyberattack, according to the Los Angeles Times. That is the bank spokesperson’s reported denial; it does not reveal what did cause the issue. The available reporting does not support attributing the outage to a software update, a vendor, Hurricane Helene, or any particular system failure.

Did customers lose money when balances showed zero?

The reports do not establish that customer funds were missing. A balance screen is information displayed by a service; a zero, blank, stale, or unavailable display during this incident was not proof of a completed transaction or a loss. The October 2024 news coverage documents reported screen symptoms, not an audit of each customer’s account ledger. If you are checking an account now, distinguish a display issue from a transaction record rather than treating the historical outage reports as evidence about your own account.

Is Bank of America down now?

The outage described here is historical. Bank of America said the technology issues were fully resolved on the evening of October 2, 2024. This reporting does not establish the bank’s current service status, so the 2024 incident should not be taken as an indication that the service is down today.
