The Bambu Lab R1 is a standalone 55 W CO₂ laser cutter and engraver with a 600 × 300 mm work area. Tom’s Hardware reviewer Denise Bertacchi found setup and positioning straightforward, but also reported loud cooling fans, few material presets at review time, and a tedious manual lens change for thicker stock. The most important buying caveat is safety: adding the optional Riser Base or Conveyor changes the machine from its fully enclosed Class 1 configuration to Class 4, according to Bambu Lab.
What the Bambu Lab R1 is
The R1 is a dedicated laser cutter and engraver, rather than a laser attachment for another machine. Bambu Lab describes it as a 55 W CO₂ system with a 600 × 300 mm work area. The manufacturer says it cuts wood, acrylic, leather, paper, and fabric, and engraves glass, stone, and coated metals. See Bambu Lab’s R1 launch announcement for its product specifications and launch details.
Tom’s Hardware reports a footprint of 940 × 560 × 200 mm and a weight of 33.5 kg (73.8 lb). Its review lists wood, acrylic (including clear acrylic), leather, fabric, paper, and EVA foam as cutting materials, and glass, ceramic, and coated metal as engraving materials. These lists describe supported uses, not a guarantee that every material formulation or thickness will produce the same result.

Material range and stated maximums
Bambu Lab claims the R1 can cut up to 18 mm black walnut plywood and up to 20 mm acrylic. Those are manufacturer capability claims; material composition, quality, settings, and setup can affect results. The launch announcement also says that the optional Conveyor supports material up to 3,000 mm long. The base work area remains 600 × 300 mm; Tom’s Hardware describes the Conveyor configuration as 600 × 3,000 mm.

What the hands-on review found
Denise Bertacchi’s Tom’s Hardware review reports successful cuts in 3 mm basswood and clear acrylic, as well as tests involving sticker paper and PETG. The reviewer also describes engraving glass and coated metal. These are results from the review’s particular materials and settings, not independently established outcomes for every batch or workflow. The review and its reported testing are at Tom’s Hardware’s Bambu Lab R1 review.
Setup, positioning, and software
The review says the R1 arrived assembled and required a short setup, including automated mirror calibration. Its positioning system combines a bird’s-eye camera, a toolhead camera, a distance-measuring laser, and XY encoders. Bertacchi found positioning worked out of the box and described Bambu Suite as easy to use.

The limitation she identified was the software’s small material-preset selection at review time. That is a dated review observation, not a claim about the current software release. If your work depends on repeatable settings for less common materials, check the current Bambu Suite options and expect to establish or refine settings for your own material.

Thicker material requires a lens change
For thicker stock, the review says the R1 needs a manual focus-lens change. Bertacchi described the process as tedious because it involves removing and replacing small screws, then running a vision-accuracy calibration. Bambu Lab lists medium- and long-focus lenses as separate accessories; confirm which lens is appropriate for your intended material and whether it is included in the configuration you are considering.

Cooling fans are loud
The review reports loud cooling fans, but does not provide a measured decibel level. Treat this as a practical workspace consideration rather than a quantified noise specification, especially if the machine will run near living or shared work areas.
Safety changes with the configuration
Bambu Lab describes the fully enclosed standard R1 as Class 1 under IEC 60825-1. That classification does not apply unchanged when the enclosure is opened up for extended material handling: the company says installing either the Riser Base or Conveyor makes the enclosure incomplete and changes the machine to Class 4. Bambu Lab says that setup requires CO₂ laser-safety goggles and is intended for trained professional use. Tom’s Hardware also flags this Class 4 and eyewear caveat.

In practical terms, decide whether you need the optional extended-material configuration before buying. It affects not only the feed length but also the safety conditions and the suitability of the workspace. Do not treat the Conveyor or Riser Base setup as equivalent to standard enclosed operation.
Bambu Lab’s broader laser-module terms advise using a correctly installed exhaust system in a well-ventilated area, avoiding unknown or hazardous materials such as PVC, observing fire precautions, and never leaving laser operation unattended. These are general manufacturer laser-safety recommendations, not a substitute for the R1’s current operating instructions. Read the product-specific instructions and safety requirements for the configuration you use.

Accessories and purchase configuration
Bambu Lab says the short-focus lens is included. It lists the Riser Base, Conveyor, Rotary attachment, medium- and long-focus lenses, Vision Encoder, E1 Pro air purifier, and Auto Fire Extinguishing system as separately sold accessories. Optional parts can change what workflows are practical, so compare the complete setup you need—not only the base machine price—with the work area, materials, exhaust arrangements, and safety requirements of your shop.
Price and availability
Bambu Lab’s September 22, 2026 launch announcement listed US pricing at $2,499 before tax, with shipping included, and EU pricing at €2,499 including tax, with shipping excluded. It said preorders began September 22 and shipping would start in October. These are launch-period terms, not a statement of today’s price, stock, shipping, or regional checkout conditions; verify those directly with Bambu Lab before ordering. Tom’s Hardware also listed the R1 at $2,499 and gave September 22, 2026 as its release date.
Who should consider the R1
The R1 is a plausible fit for a maker or small workshop that wants a dedicated CO₂ laser, a 600 × 300 mm standard work area, camera-assisted positioning, and a software workflow the reviewer found approachable. It is less straightforward for someone who expects a broad, ready-made material library, quiet operation, or frequent thick-stock jobs without hands-on setup. Those judgments follow from the review’s reported software presets, fan noise, and lens-change process.

Before choosing a configuration, map your usual material sizes to the base area or Conveyor length, determine whether the included short-focus lens suits your work, and account for the different safety classification if you need the Riser Base or Conveyor. The evidence here supports a product review, not a complete head-to-head comparison with competing laser machines.
