The Bambu Lab R1 could turn a games room or workshop from a place to display hobbies into one where you make useful, repeatable parts. In The Escapist’s review, Paul McNally describes using it for games-room projects and planning a flight-simulator cockpit with cut panels, switch holes, display openings, labels, and layered acrylic. The appeal is clear—but so are the trade-offs: this is a substantial, safety-sensitive machine, and the price of a workable setup can rise with accessories.
What the Bambu Lab R1 is designed to do
The R1 is a CO₂ laser cutter and engraver aimed at makers who need more than occasional surface engraving. McNally’s review describes it as suitable for making cockpit panels, signs, arcade decorations, logos, display stands, wall art, coasters, and labels. That range makes it relevant to a home workshop where parts must fit a project, rather than simply look decorative.
For the cockpit example, a maker could design a panel with switch holes and display openings, position the artwork over a photographed workpiece, and revise and reproduce the digital design as the build changes. The review describes this as a practical workflow enabled by camera positioning and automatic alignment; it is the reviewer’s account, not an independent measurement of repeatability.
Recommended Free Tools
The review lists wood, acrylic, leather, fabric, paper, EVA foam, and shell among materials the R1 can cut or engrave. It says glass, ceramic, and coated metal can be engraved, while bare metal is outside its intended capabilities. Those material claims should be checked against the current manufacturer guidance before choosing stock, especially for materials that may release hazardous fumes.

How the work area and lenses affect a project
Standard bed for panels and smaller work
A 600 × 300 mm standard work area, as reported in the review, is a useful starting point for control panels, signs, labels, and other pieces that fit within the bed. Before buying, compare the usable area with the largest single component in your actual projects; a design that fits only after splitting may need extra alignment and assembly.

Conveyor for longer stock
The optional Conveyor is reported to extend the processing area to 600 × 3,000 mm. That can matter for long signs or continuous material, but the extended workflow also needs room for material to feed through and be supported. The review does not establish current Conveyor pricing or regional availability.
Short-focus versus optional lenses
The included short-focus lens is associated in the review with a 0.11 mm spot and cutting up to 15 mm black walnut plywood. Optional medium- or long-focus lenses are reported to support cuts up to 18 mm in that material. Treat these as manufacturer-attributed capability figures, not a guarantee for every material: actual results depend on material properties and operating conditions, which the review does not quantify.
What the review says about cutting and engraving
The key distinction is the CO₂ laser. McNally notes that it can cut clear acrylic, unlike common blue diode lasers, making it particularly relevant to projects such as cockpit panels and illuminated displays. The review’s broader material list includes wood, leather, fabric, paper, EVA foam, and shell, plus engraving on glass, ceramic, and coated metal. Bare metal is not described as a suitable target.

Material compatibility is not just a question of whether a laser can mark or cut a surface. Check the current official material guidance for the exact material and finish before processing it, and do not assume that a material’s familiar name means every formulation is safe. The review specifically warns against processing vinyl.

The review presents camera-based placement, automatic alignment, and automatic focus as ways to reduce setup effort. That can help when laying artwork over an existing piece of material or positioning designs for repeat production. It does not remove the need to prepare a correct digital design, confirm the workpiece position, and monitor the cutting process.
McNally’s verdict is that Bambu Suite still needs to mature, including gaps in presets and workflow polish. If your projects depend on particular design tools, file formats, repeatable job settings, or a specific level of manual control, confirm that the current software supports the workflow you need before committing to the machine.

What the R1 could add to a games room or workshop
- Flight-simulator cockpit: Cut panels with openings for switches and displays, and make labels or layered acrylic details.
- Arcade and games-room decor: Produce signs, logos, wall art, and decorative pieces sized for a specific space.
- Organization and presentation: Make labels, coasters, and display stands that match the room or collection.
- Repeatable project parts: Revise a digital panel design as a build changes, then make another version without redrawing it from scratch.
These are compelling uses if fabrication is part of the hobby. If the goal is only to engrave a few occasional gifts or decorations, the R1’s cutting capacity and accessory ecosystem may be more machine than the job calls for.

The Escapist reported a UK starting price of £2,249 with the short-focus lens included, but that is a review-era figure rather than a verified current listing. The review names several optional accessories: Riser Base, Conveyor, Rotary Attachment, Vision Encoder, alternative lenses, E1 Pro Air Purifier, and an automatic fire-extinguishing system. It does not establish their prices, bundles, stock, or regional availability.
Choose add-ons by the work they enable rather than assuming every option is necessary. A long-stock workflow may justify the Conveyor; deeper cuts may make an alternative lens relevant; rotary work or improved motion accuracy may call for a specific accessory. Build a configuration around real project requirements, then verify compatibility, total price, and availability in your region.

Workspace, ventilation, and laser safety
The reviewer says the standard enclosed configuration is Class 1 and includes lid-open protection, flame detection, and an emergency stop. The same review says configurations that open the enclosure with certain accessories are treated as Class 4, requiring appropriate CO₂-laser eye protection and stronger precautions. These are review-reported descriptions, not a substitute for the current product manual or applicable local requirements.
Laser cutting can produce smoke and particles and carries a fire risk. The review describes extraction hardware and an optional E1 Pro Air Purifier, but does not establish what extraction configuration is sufficient for every material or installation. Before operating the R1, consult current official safety documentation for classification, enclosure configuration, material restrictions, extraction, eye protection, supervision, and local rules. Do not leave a laser cutter unattended.
Plan the physical installation as carefully as the purchase. The review reports dimensions of 940 × 560 × 200 mm and a weight of 33.5 kg; leave room for access, ventilation and, if used, feeding longer stock through a Conveyor. Keep the machine in a workspace where you can supervise it and respond promptly if a job ignites or behaves unexpectedly.
Who should consider the Bambu Lab R1?
A strong fit for
- Makers who regularly need to cut parts, not just engrave surfaces.
- Builders producing custom panels, signs, acrylic components, or repeatable project pieces.
- People with a dedicated, ventilated workspace and the time to learn safe laser operation.
- Buyers willing to assess software fit and budget for accessories tied to specific needs.
Probably not the right fit for
- People seeking an occasional-use engraver without a clear need for CO₂ cutting capability.
- Anyone without a suitable location for extraction, safe supervision, and the machine’s footprint.
- Buyers expecting every useful accessory or a fully polished workflow to be included in the base configuration.
For a maker building a cockpit or outfitting a games room with custom-fabricated components, the R1’s mix of cutting area, camera-guided placement, and reported ability to process clear acrylic makes a persuasive case. The case is weaker if those capabilities would sit idle: space, safety preparation, software limitations, and configuration costs are integral to the decision, not minor afterthoughts.
