Some Bambu Lab firmware updates can reduce how directly third-party software and accessories control the printer. The change is about authorization and network-control paths, not a blanket loss of basic printing. Its exact effect depends on the printer model and firmware: Bambu Lab first announced the controls for X1 Series firmware 01.08.03.00 or above, then similar restrictions were reported for P1P, P1S, and A1 firmware in June 2025.

What the Bambu Lab firmware change does

In 2025, Bambu Lab announced authorization controls for X1 Series firmware 01.08.03.00 or above, alongside specified Bambu Studio and Bambu Handy versions. The company said unauthorized third-party software would no longer be able to execute certain critical operations. It advised owners who needed direct third-party software or hardware control to remain on older firmware; after upgrading, third-party tools and accessories would not control the X Series printer as before. The announcement also warned that outdated companion software could leave some controls unusable. Bambu Lab’s announcement describes the original scope.

“Less capable” therefore means less direct access for some tools and devices, and potentially an extra step in the workflow. It does not mean the printer is generally unable to print. In its follow-up, Bambu Lab specifically rejected claims that the change disables third-party filament or bricks the printer. The follow-up explains the company’s position.

Which models were reported as affected?

The initial announcement concerned the X1 Series. Tom’s Hardware reported on June 8, 2025 that new firmware for the P1P, P1S, and A1 also restricted unofficial software by default, with older firmware and Developer Mode described as alternatives at that time. That report is not a complete compatibility matrix, and it does not establish the current behavior of each model. Check the release notes for your exact printer and firmware before updating. Tom’s Hardware’s June 2025 report covers those model families.

Why Bambu Lab said it made the change

Bambu Lab said it wanted to verify hardware interactions—including axis movement and heating—and address abnormal requests to its cloud services. The company reported a peak of up to 30 million unauthorized requests per day; this is Bambu Lab’s 2025 figure, not an independently verified measurement in the available sources. The company described the update as necessary to enhance printer security. Its announcement provides that rationale.

The stated security rationale and the reported request volume are claims by the manufacturer. The sources cited here do not establish an independent security audit or independently confirm the traffic figure, so neither should be treated as a third-party finding.

What happens to OrcaSlicer and other third-party workflows?

The change does not necessarily prevent third-party slicing. Bambu Lab proposed Bambu Connect as a way to continue third-party slicer integration, with printer communication handled through a separate client. That preserves a route for the workflow but adds software and a communication step compared with direct printer control. The initial announcement described Connect as in development or beta. Check its current availability and model support rather than assuming the 2025 description still applies. Bambu Lab’s follow-up outlines Connect.

For OrcaSlicer specifically, whether a workflow remains usable depends on the printer, firmware, and current integration. Later coverage described limitations in a Connect workflow, including being able to view printer or AMS settings without changing certain settings directly in OrcaSlicer. This is a report about the described setup, not a guarantee about all current models or versions. Tom’s Hardware’s Connect coverage describes that workflow.

Choose the control route that fits your setup

Route Third-party control and extra software LAN and security implications Support and model caveat
Stay on older firmware Bambu Lab recommended this to X Series users who needed direct third-party software or hardware control; no separate Connect client was specified for this route. Retains the prior control approach, but the cited announcement does not establish that it is a supported offline or LAN workflow. Applies to the original X Series guidance. Check the current model-specific release notes; the cited sources do not establish current firmware status for every model.
Use Bambu Connect Allows a third-party slicer integration through a separate communication client, rather than the previous direct-control path. The cited announcement does not provide a full LAN/offline behavior matrix for all models and versions. Initially described as beta or in development. Current availability and capabilities vary by model and release; confirm them before relying on this route.
Enable Developer Mode Bambu Lab said advanced users could keep MQTT, livestream, and FTP open. The user assumes responsibility for local-network security when those interfaces remain open. Bambu Lab said customer support would not be available for this mode. Confirm that it exists and works as expected for the specific model and firmware.

The options are not simply “secure” versus “insecure.” They trade direct access and workflow convenience against the manufacturer’s authorization controls, local network responsibilities, and support availability. The precise current behavior cannot be inferred across all models from the 2025 announcements.

  • If direct third-party control is essential, weigh the older-firmware route against its implications before upgrading; Bambu Lab recommended staying on older firmware for this need in its original X Series announcement.
  • If considering Connect, check present availability and the functions it supports for your particular model and software versions.
  • If considering Developer Mode, understand the open interfaces, your local-network security responsibilities, and the stated lack of customer support for that mode.
