Microsoft’s Azure Front Door (AFD) incident on October 9, 2025, disrupted AFD and Azure CDN traffic and made Azure Portal and other Microsoft management portals less available. Microsoft traced it to a control-plane defect and a cleanup operation that allowed erroneous metadata to reach the data plane, where it triggered crashes. The incident is historical: Microsoft reported AFD availability restored by 12:50 UTC and latency back to baseline by 16:00 UTC.

What happened in the Azure Front Door outage?

Tracked by Microsoft as QNBQ-5W8, the incident ran from 07:50 to 16:00 UTC on October 9, 2025. Customers using Azure Front Door and Azure CDN could experience increased latency and timeouts, primarily in Africa and Europe, as well as in Asia Pacific and the Middle East. The disruption also affected access to Azure Portal and other Microsoft management portals.

Microsoft reported approximate peak AFD failure rates of 17% in Africa, 6% in Europe, and 2.7% in Asia Pacific and the Middle East. These are regional failure-rate figures, not percentages of customers or requests. Microsoft also said approximately 26% of AFD data-plane infrastructure resources in Europe and Africa were impacted.

Why did the outage happen?

Microsoft attributed the incident to a defect in a newer AFD control-plane version and an erroneous tenant-metadata cleanup sequence. AFD’s control plane generates metadata used by the data plane when customers create, update, or delete AFD or CDN profiles. A particular sequence of profile updates had produced erroneous metadata, and automated protection initially blocked affected updates.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

During cleanup, Microsoft temporarily bypassed that protection to correct tenant configuration. The erroneous metadata then propagated to later stages and activated a data-plane bug that crashed resources at edge sites. Microsoft said the control-plane version containing the defect had been rolled out six weeks before the incident under its safe deployment practices.

How the impact spread

The crashes affected a significant number of edge sites in Europe and Africa. AFD shifted traffic to nearby sites, including sites in Asia Pacific and the Middle East. Increased demand during regional business hours added pressure; load on remaining healthy sites exceeded operational thresholds and led to broader traffic distribution.

How did Microsoft recover service?

Microsoft used automated restarts and manual intervention when restarts were too slow. Management portals also failed over traffic to help restore access. AFD availability recovered before latency fully returned to baseline, which Microsoft reported at 16:00 UTC.

What did Microsoft say it would change?

Microsoft’s incident review marks three corrective actions complete: hardening procedures so the configuration-protection system is not bypassed for operations, fixing the control-plane defect that generated erroneous metadata, and fixing the data-plane bug.

The same review listed additional actions with estimated completion dates. Those estimates are not confirmation that the work was later completed.

How can you prepare for an Azure Front Door outage?

Microsoft’s recommendations focus on designing for failure and ensuring you can detect service impact rather than assuming every application will experience the same symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Plan an alternate route: Consider Azure Traffic Manager failover from AFD to your origins. Define which failures should trigger a route change and how the alternate path will be validated.
  • Use retry logic: Implement retries with exponential backoff so transient failures do not immediately become repeated bursts of traffic.
  • Review resilience: Apply Microsoft’s Azure Front Door architecture best practices and assess application reliability with the Azure Well-Architected Framework.
  • Monitor customer impact: Use granular monitoring to identify which application functions, regions, and resources are affected.
  • Enable personalized alerts: Configure Azure Service Health alerts for relevant subscriptions and services.
  • Test recovery independently: Exercise the failover path and recovery procedures before an incident, including how routing changes are triggered and how the application behaves when traffic reaches the origin.

These choices address different failure modes and have different operational demands. The PIR recommends origin failover, architecture practices, and retries, but does not quantify performance or cost for a particular customer’s design.

Where should you check Azure service status?

Microsoft distinguishes the public Azure status page from Azure Service Health. The public page provides broad service-health information and is used for specified broad-impact situations, including cases that impede access to Azure Portal or Service Health when Microsoft cannot reach customers through its standard path. Azure Service Health provides personalized information about outages, planned maintenance, and advisories relevant to your environment. Details are in Microsoft’s Azure Status Overview.

For incident-specific details, Microsoft’s Azure status history and Azure Service Health documentation explain status reporting and notifications.
