AZ-104 is centered on administering and operating Azure; AZ-305 is centered on designing Azure solutions around business and technical requirements. The distinction is a difference in emphasis, not a hard boundary between isolated jobs: administrators and architects collaborate, and both need broad Azure knowledge. If your day-to-day work is configuring and supporting deployed services, AZ-104 is the closer fit. If you are ready to advise stakeholders and make cross-domain design decisions, AZ-305 aligns more closely.
What the administrator and architect are responsible for
Microsoft describes the Azure Administrator role as implementing, managing, and monitoring an organization’s Azure environment. That includes identity, security, governance, storage, compute, and virtual networking. An administrator’s practical focus is keeping deployed services correctly configured, observable, governed, and supportable.

Cloud Architect: Associate to Professional Across Three Clouds - SAA-C03, SAP-C02, AZ-104, AZ-305,... | $12.99 | Buy on Amazon |
The Azure Solutions Architect role starts with stakeholder needs and translates business requirements into Azure designs aligned with the Azure Well-Architected Framework and Cloud Adoption Framework for Azure. Architects consider how decisions in networking, virtualization, identity, security, continuity, disaster recovery, data platforms, and governance fit together.

A company may combine responsibilities or assign them across several people. Microsoft’s profiles describe both roles as collaborative: administrators work with infrastructure, networking, security, database, application-development, and DevOps colleagues; architects partner with administrators, developers, security engineers, and data engineers.

How the work differs in practice
| Lens | AZ-104: administrator emphasis | AZ-305: architect emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Primary question | How should I configure, operate, and monitor this Azure environment? | Which Azure design best meets these business and technical requirements? |
| Center of gravity | Deploying, managing, and maintaining services and controls. | Choosing and coordinating solution approaches across technical domains. |
| Typical decision scope | Resource and service configuration, access, operations, and maintenance. | Cross-domain design trade-offs and recommendations for stakeholders. |
| Illustrative work outputs | Identity and role assignments; governance settings; provisioned or updated storage, compute, and network resources; monitoring or maintenance actions; operational documentation. | Architecture options and recommendations; identity, network, compute, and storage patterns; continuity and disaster-recovery design; governance and monitoring recommendations; rationale connecting choices to requirements. |
The outputs in the table are practical examples inferred from Microsoft’s exam scopes, not required or standardized workplace documents. The time-horizon distinction is also about emphasis: administrators can plan, and architects need implementation awareness.
The mindset each path rewards
AZ-104: make the deployed environment work
AZ-104 rewards an operational perspective: understand the environment, configure resources and controls accurately, monitor what is running, and carry out maintenance. Microsoft’s candidate profile lists familiarity with operating systems, networking, servers, virtualization, PowerShell, Azure CLI, the Azure portal, ARM templates or Bicep, and Microsoft Entra ID. These are knowledge and experience areas, not a claim that every administrator uses every tool each day.
AZ-305: connect requirements to a coherent design
AZ-305 rewards the ability to begin with requirements and constraints, then reason across connected technical areas. A design choice about identity, for example, has implications for security and governance; infrastructure choices affect continuity and monitoring. Microsoft expects advanced IT-operations knowledge and experience in Azure administration, Azure development, and DevOps processes, so architecture is not a path that dispenses with implementation knowledge.

What the current exams emphasize
Microsoft’s study guides identify the skills measured as of April 17, 2026. The weight ranges below are exam-domain allocations, not estimates of time spent on those tasks in a particular job.
| Exam | Current domain | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| AZ-104 | Manage Azure identities and governance | 20–25% |
| AZ-104 | Implement and manage storage | 15–20% |
| AZ-104 | Deploy and manage Azure compute resources | 20–25% |
| AZ-104 | Implement and manage virtual networking | 15–20% |
| AZ-104 | Monitor and maintain Azure resources | 10–15% |
| AZ-305 | Design identity, governance, and monitoring solutions | 25–30% |
| AZ-305 | Design data storage solutions | 20–25% |
| AZ-305 | Design business continuity solutions | 15–20% |
| AZ-305 | Design infrastructure solutions | 30–35% |
The overlap in identity, governance, and infrastructure is intentional. The verbs show the difference: AZ-104 focuses on managing, implementing, deploying, monitoring, and maintaining; AZ-305 focuses on designing and recommending.
How the certification path works
AZ-104 is associated with Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate. AZ-305 is the exam required for Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, and that expert credential also requires Azure Administrator Associate. So AZ-305 is not simply an interchangeable next exam: the prerequisite credential matters.
- Microsoft lists a passing score of 700 for both exams.
- Microsoft’s AZ-104 exam page lists a duration of 100 minutes. Check the live page for current language and scheduling details.
- Microsoft’s AZ-305 exam page lists a price of $165 USD, with the price based on the country or region where the exam is proctored. It is not a universal price.
- Microsoft says role-based certifications expire annually and can be renewed through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Confirm current renewal rules on the credential page.
Exam logistics, fees, renewal rules, and outlines can change. Check the official AZ-104 exam page, AZ-305 exam page, and relevant credential pages before booking.

Choose AZ-104 when your work is operational
AZ-104 is the more direct match if you configure Azure services, manage access and governance, deploy compute or storage, work with virtual networks, and monitor or maintain resources. Its scope also offers a structured way to build or validate administration skills across those areas.
Choose the AZ-305 path when you are moving toward solution design
AZ-305 is a closer match if you already have broad operations knowledge and want to turn stakeholder requirements into coordinated designs covering infrastructure, data, identity, governance, monitoring, and continuity. Because Azure Administrator Associate is required for the expert credential, plan for that certification as part of the path.
This is guidance about alignment with Microsoft’s role profiles, not a promise about hiring or job outcomes. Certification scopes do not establish standardized job titles or a fixed division of labor in every organization.
Quick Recap
How to prepare without studying an outdated outline
- Open the current AZ-104 study guide or AZ-305 study guide and confirm its skills-measured date before using older notes or course material.
- Use the guide’s domain weights to identify weaker areas, then study the relevant Microsoft Learn material and documentation.
- Build hands-on experience with the services and decisions in the outline. Microsoft recommends training and hands-on practice; its preparation resources also include self-study, instructor-led training, practice assessments, exam readiness videos, and an exam sandbox.
- Recheck the live exam page for current scheduling, language, duration, and other logistics before you book.
