The “army” in AWS prepares to command an army of AI agents refers to coordinating specialized AI agents—not a new AWS-managed product. David Linthicum’s InfoWorld analysis, published November 22, 2024, focused on AWS Labs’ open-source Multi-Agent Orchestrator. The project is now called Agent Squad and is maintained at 2FastLabs; Amazon Bedrock Agents also offers a separate, managed multi-agent collaboration feature.
What is an AI agent?
In this context, an AI agent is a component assigned a particular task or area of expertise. An orchestrator can receive a user request, route it to a suitable specialized agent, and preserve context as work moves among agents or across sessions. That is the organizing idea behind the open-source project Linthicum discussed in 2024—not a claim that every agent acts independently or that adding agents automatically improves results.
Linthicum connected the approach to the longer history of distributed computing: divide work among components and coordinate their contributions. He argued that local or edge processing could reduce centralized processing and data transfer, with possible effects on cost, latency, resource use, resilience, and fault tolerance. Those are workload-dependent possibilities, not demonstrated outcomes: his article supplies no controlled test or customer results establishing savings or reliability improvements.

The November 22, 2024 InfoWorld article described AWS Labs’ Multi-Agent Orchestrator as an open-source framework for coordinating multiple AI agents. The project’s current repository presents it as Agent Squad, formerly Multi-Agent Orchestrator. The README says it was previously hosted at awslabs/agent-squad and is now maintained at 2FastLabs/agent-squad.

Agent Squad’s stated purpose is to route each user query to an appropriate specialized agent and maintain context across agents and sessions. Its README lists Python, TypeScript, and Swift runtimes and describes integrations that include Amazon Bedrock. Those are repository descriptions, not a guarantee that every capability, integration, or version will remain unchanged.
Do we need something new?
Not necessarily. The useful question is whether routing and coordination among specialized agents address a real workload problem well enough to justify the extra components and their operational, security, and cost complexity. A single agent or a conventional application may be simpler if the work does not require distinct specialties, delegation, or shared context.

For a workload that does need coordination, compare the two approaches relevant to the headline. Agent Squad is an open-source framework; Amazon Bedrock Agents’ multi-agent collaboration is a managed AWS service capability. Agent Squad can integrate with Bedrock, but the names do not describe the same product.

Before choosing either path, check where components will run, which models and integrations the workload requires, how permissions and security boundaries will be enforced, and how people will supervise or review agent actions. Also account for observability and ongoing operating costs. Distributed systems create more integration and governance work; Linthicum specifically cautioned that security grows more complex as systems are distributed.

When could an agent “army” help—and what could go wrong?
An orchestrated design may be worth evaluating when one request genuinely needs work from distinct specialized agents, when the system must route different queries to different capabilities, or when context needs to carry across those interactions. Whether that division improves a particular system is a question to answer against its actual workload, not a general property of multi-agent architectures.
- Potential benefit: Linthicum proposed that local or edge processing might reduce centralized processing and data transfer. Any resulting change in cost, latency, or resilience depends on the workload and architecture.
- Coordination burden: Routing, delegation, shared context, integrations, and failure handling add moving parts that must be designed and operated.
- Security and oversight: Define each agent’s permissions and boundaries, decide what data it can access, and determine where human review is required.
- Evidence gap: The 2024 InfoWorld analysis offers no controlled test or customer results proving that this approach saves money, improves resilience, or raises accuracy.
InfoWorld also reported a market estimate attributed to SNS Insider: $3.7 billion for the global AI agents market in 2023, projected to reach $103.6 billion by 2032, with a 44.9% CAGR for 2024–2032. Those are figures as reported by InfoWorld in 2024, not current 2026 market data or an independently confirmed forecast here.
