AWS’s Canadian footprint now spans two Regions: Canada (Central) in Montreal (ca-central-1) and Canada West (Calgary, ca-west-1). Calgary gives organizations another in-country location for cloud workloads and the option to design for regional failure without moving data outside Canada. What that means for residency, latency, compliance, and recovery depends on the services and architecture a customer chooses.
What AWS’s second Canadian Region changes
AWS launched Canada (Central) in Montreal on December 8, 2016, and Canada West in Calgary on December 20, 2023. The Calgary launch created a second AWS Region in Canada, separated geographically from Montreal by the distance between Quebec and Alberta. AWS’s Montreal launch announcement and Calgary launch announcement identify the two locations and launch details.
A Region is a distinct AWS geographic area; Availability Zones are separate locations within a Region. Calgary launched with three Availability Zones. That internal separation supports designs that tolerate certain facility or zone disruptions, while having Montreal and Calgary available gives customers the option to plan for a broader regional outage. Simply choosing a Region does not make an application resilient: customers need to configure and test replication, failover, backups, and recovery procedures.

| Launch date | December 8, 2016 (AWS) | December 20, 2023 (AWS) |
| Availability Zones at launch | Not stated in the cited AWS launch material | Three (AWS, 2023) |
| Services at launch | Not stated in the cited AWS launch material | 70 (AWS, 2023) |
| Geography | Quebec | Alberta |
Calgary’s 70-service launch selection included services such as EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, EKS, VPC, CloudWatch, and security services. That is a historical launch count, not a current catalogue: service availability changes, and not every AWS service or feature is necessarily offered in every Region. Check the AWS regional services list for the services and features your design requires. Montreal’s earlier launch also means it has a longer operating history, but launch dates alone do not establish which Region is better suited to a particular workload.

Data residency, sovereignty, and Protected B
Using an AWS Region in Canada gives customers a choice to deploy and process data in Canada. AWS says customers control data location and access, and describes its Canadian infrastructure as assessed and authorized to host Protected B workloads, a Government of Canada classification for sensitive information. See AWS’s Canada data protection information for its statements on Canadian infrastructure and compliance.
A Region choice is not, by itself, proof that every data flow stays in Canada or that a workload meets a particular legal or contractual requirement. Check the selected service’s terms and documentation, including where data is stored, processed, backed up, or replicated; review the exact scope and current status of any authorization; and account for access controls and operational practices. If data is replicated between Montreal and Calgary, that remains within Canada, but customers should still verify the behavior of each service and their own configuration.

Latency and workload placement
Calgary creates a nearer regional option for some users and systems in western Canada, while Montreal may suit workloads and users nearer eastern Canada. AWS describes the new Region as offering low latency and improved performance in general, but the available launch material does not provide measured latency figures or establish a universal performance advantage. Actual results depend on user location, network route, application design, and the services involved.

Using both Regions for disaster recovery
AWS has positioned Calgary’s launch as enabling multi-Region designs, including architectures targeting five-nines availability while keeping data in Canada. That is an architectural goal, not an automatic uptime guarantee from turning on two Regions. A robust design must address what is replicated, how quickly a secondary environment can take over, and how recovery is tested.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Set recovery objectives. Define acceptable recovery time and data loss for each application before choosing a replication pattern.
- Check service and feature parity. Confirm both Regions support the services, quotas, and configurations your recovery plan needs.
- Choose a data strategy. Decide which data is replicated continuously, copied on a schedule, or restored from backups, and verify consistency requirements.
- Automate and test failover. Document how traffic, dependencies, credentials, and operators switch to the recovery Region; run exercises to find gaps.
- Plan for return to normal. Define how to reconcile data and move workloads back after the primary Region is available.
Using two Regions can reduce dependence on a single geography, but it also adds cost and operational complexity. The right design depends on the consequences of downtime and the recovery targets—not on the availability of a second Region alone.
