Amazon’s November 22, 2024 announcement added $4 billion to its investment in Anthropic, bringing Amazon’s reported total investment to $8 billion while keeping Amazon a minority investor. The deal also deepened AWS’s role as Anthropic’s primary cloud and training partner and expanded customer access to Claude models through Amazon Bedrock. AWS CEO Matt Garman described customer response to those applications as “remarkable.”
What Amazon announced in November 2024
The November 2024 transaction was an additional $4 billion, not the completion of Amazon’s earlier commitment. Amazon and Anthropic said the new funding raised Amazon’s cumulative investment to $8 billion and preserved its minority ownership position.
The announcement tied the investment to a broader strategic relationship: Anthropic would continue using AWS infrastructure and chips, while AWS customers could use Anthropic’s Claude models through Amazon Bedrock. Anthropic separately confirmed AWS as its primary cloud and training partner.

Why the $4 billion figure can be confusing
Amazon and Anthropic had already announced an investment of up to $4 billion on September 25, 2023. Amazon reported completing that original commitment in March 2024 through two tranches: an initial $1.25 billion and a further $2.75 billion.
Therefore, the November announcement referred to a second $4 billion commitment. The timeline is:
Rank #2
| Date | Investment announced or completed | Partnership terms highlighted |
|---|---|---|
| September 25, 2023 | Up to $4 billion original commitment | Minority ownership; AWS as primary cloud provider; access to Claude through Bedrock; Trainium and Inferentia collaboration |
| March 2024 | Original $4 billion completed: $1.25 billion plus $2.75 billion, as reported by Amazon | Completion of the 2023 commitment |
| November 22, 2024 | Additional $4 billion; $8 billion cumulative Amazon investment | Deeper AWS collaboration, Bedrock availability and continued Trainium work |
What the original partnership covered
AWS infrastructure for Anthropic
The 2023 agreement identified AWS as Anthropic’s primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads, including safety research and future foundation-model development. Anthropic said it would use AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips, and the companies described cooperation on future chip technology.

AWS customers were promised access to future Anthropic foundation models through Amazon Bedrock, with early access to model customization and fine-tuning capabilities. Amazon’s own developers and engineers could also build with Anthropic models through Bedrock.

In practical terms, Bedrock is the AWS service through which organizations can call supported foundation models without operating the underlying model-training infrastructure themselves. The announcements establish availability and collaboration terms; they do not independently establish a particular model’s quality, safety, savings or business results.
Leadership statements
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the companies’ deeper collaboration could help improve customer experiences “short and long-term.” Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei said the company was excited to use AWS Trainium chips to develop future foundation models.
How AWS customers were using Claude
Amazon’s November announcement cited customer-service chatbots, coding assistants, translation applications, drug discovery, engineering design and complex business processes as use cases for Anthropic-powered applications on Bedrock.

Amazon named ADP, Airtable, DoorDash, Intuit, Pfizer, Siemens and Zendesk as companies using Claude with Bedrock. These are examples supplied by Amazon; they are not an independent adoption survey or proof that every deployment achieved a particular outcome.

For Anthropic
- Access to AWS data-center capacity and specialized Trainium and Inferentia hardware for training and serving models.
- A major cloud distribution channel through Bedrock for organizations already buying AWS services.
- Capital from Amazon while Anthropic remained a minority-owned company rather than an Amazon subsidiary.
For AWS
- A prominent large-language-model partner for Bedrock’s enterprise model lineup.
- Demand for AWS infrastructure and custom AI chips tied to Anthropic’s workloads.
- A relationship that could encourage AWS customers to build applications around Bedrock and Claude.
Neither company’s announcement guarantees that Anthropic models will outperform alternatives, that Trainium will reduce a customer’s costs, or that a Bedrock deployment will be successful. Those outcomes depend on model choice, workload, implementation and operating conditions.
Later developments are separate from the November 2024 deal
Subsequent Amazon and Anthropic announcements expanded the reported scale of the relationship. Amazon said more than 100,000 customers were running Claude models on AWS and that Anthropic had committed to spend more than $100 billion on AWS technologies over ten years. The companies described up to 5 gigawatts of additional compute capacity across Trainium and Graviton infrastructure.
Amazon also announced a further $5 billion investment, with the possibility of up to another $20 billion tied to commercial milestones, in addition to the earlier $8 billion. Anthropic said it was using more than one million Trainium2 chips to train and serve Claude.
All of those later figures are company-reported and belong to later partnership updates. They should not be added to the November 2024 announcement when describing what that $4 billion expansion itself contained.
Quick Recap
What readers should take away
- The headline’s “new $4 billion” means Amazon’s additional November 2024 investment, not the original 2023 commitment.
- After that announcement, Amazon reported $8 billion invested in Anthropic in total.
- AWS’s role combined infrastructure, custom-chip collaboration and customer access to Claude through Bedrock.
- Garman’s “remarkable” comment described AWS customer response; it was a company executive’s characterization, not an independently measured market statistic.
- Later commitments and capacity numbers represent subsequent expansions and must be dated separately.
