AWS provides several native ways to see access-key activity: the IAM users list and user details, a credential report, the GetAccessKeyLastUsed API or CLI operation, and CloudTrail event history. Which one helps depends on whether you need a quick interactive review, a scoped account-wide CSV, a lookup for a known key ID, or event-level investigation. A visibility view can help manage credentials, but it is not a reason to create or retain long-lived keys.

Where to see IAM access-key activity in the console

For a quick review, open the IAM users list in the AWS Management Console and look for the Access key last used column. If it is not visible, enable it in the list’s visible-column preferences. Opening an individual user’s details page shows access-key IDs, their status, and last-use information. See AWS documentation on access-key last-used information.

This is the most direct option when you want to inspect IAM users interactively. Check which identity types and credentials are represented before treating the view as a complete inventory of everything that can access AWS.

Choose the right method for the question

Method Best for Scope and limits
IAM users list and user details Interactive review of users, access-key status, and recent use The last-used column may need to be enabled. It is an IAM-user workflow, not a universal view of every AWS credential. AWS documentation
IAM credential report Exporting selected IAM credential details as a CSV for account-wide review Includes data for the first two access keys per user and excludes service-specific credentials and additional access keys beyond those first two. AWS allows report generation at most once every four hours. AWS credential report documentation
GetAccessKeyLastUsed API or CLI Checking the latest recorded use of a known access-key ID Requires the key ID and a caller with the required permissions; this is a targeted lookup, not an account-wide CSV. AWS documentation
CloudTrail event history Investigating events associated with an access key AWS re:Post describes event history as retaining the last 90 days. This event-level investigation source is distinct from IAM’s last-used metadata; do not assume that window applies to every CloudTrail configuration or log destination. AWS re:Post guidance

Look up a known key with the CLI

If you already have the access-key ID and need its most recent use, AWS provides the get-access-key-last-used CLI operation:

aws iam get-access-key-last-used --access-key-id AKIAEXAMPLE

Replace AKIAEXAMPLE with the key ID you are investigating. The caller must have the permissions required for the operation. Use this for a specific key; use the console list or credential report when you need to review multiple IAM users or credentials.

What a credential report does—and does not—show

The IAM credential report is a downloadable CSV of selected IAM-managed credential information. Its coverage is limited: for each user, it includes information for the first two access keys, and it does not include service-specific credentials or any further access keys for that user. It therefore should not be described as a complete inventory of every credential that can reach AWS. AWS also limits report generation to once every four hours, so it is not a continuously refreshed activity feed. Details are in the credential report documentation.

Use last-use data as part of credential hygiene

Last-use information can help identify long-term IAM user keys to review, rotate, or remove. It does not make long-term keys the preferred choice. Amazon Web Services states in IAM Best Practices: “Where possible, we recommend relying on temporary credentials instead of creating long-term credentials such as access keys.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where long-term IAM user credentials are still necessary, AWS recommends using last-used information to rotate and remove keys regularly. AWS also advises against root-user access keys; see its guidance for managing access keys. Treat a visibility view as a way to support that cleanup—not as a reason to issue or preserve keys that could be replaced with temporary credentials.
