AVG’s current test hub promises results for Windows speed and cleaning, Mac and Android cleaning, and battery life, but the public page does not publish current measured figures. The only detailed speed and battery numbers AVG has released are from an October 2014 whitepaper for the older AVG PC TuneUp product. Treat them as historical vendor results, not proof that today’s AVG TuneUp will make your computer faster or extend its battery life by any particular amount.

What AVG’s test page actually shows

AVG’s English (US) test hub, titled “AVG TuneUp Tests | Speed, Cleaning & Battery Life,” is organised by platform and test category. The categories it lists are:

Platform Test categories listed on the hub
Windows Speed and cleaning; battery life
Mac Cleaning
Android Cleaning and battery life

The page carries a qualification that matters more than the headline: “The results from our internal test lab are indicative only. Your results may vary.” The page indicates that AVG ran internal tests, but it does not show the figures, the test method, the hardware, or the software version behind them. A reader should not read the hub’s section titles as a guarantee of any measured gain.

What the software is designed to do

AVG’s support documentation describes TuneUp as an optimisation utility whose scans look for unnecessary items and performance problems. These descriptions tell you which functions exist and what AVG intends them to achieve. They do not measure how much faster any machine becomes.

Windows

According to AVG Support’s FAQ, the Windows version covers:

  • Cleaning system junk and browser data.
  • Managing installed applications and startup behaviour.
  • Disk optimisation and related maintenance.

AVG says that scanning and fixing these items may free disk space and improve system speed. Freed storage is a measurable result you can check yourself. A speed improvement is the vendor’s stated expectation and depends on what was slowing the computer in the first place.

Full Disk Cleaner mode deserves caution. AVG’s Windows instructions warn that it can delete the contents of your Downloads folder and advise you to review those files before proceeding. Cleanup is a set of choices you should check, not a one-click action that is safe for every detected file.

Mac

The Mac FAQ describes cleaning of clutter and browser data, finding duplicate files, photo analysis, app removal, and management of startup items. AVG states that TuneUp on Mac requires a separate paid subscription and can be installed without AVG AntiVirus. Do not assume that every Windows feature or test category exists on the Mac version; the test hub lists only cleaning for Mac.

What an independent reviewer found

COMPUTER BILD published its review of AVG TuneUp on September 12, 2024, and gave the tested product a 3.6 on the German school-grade scale, which it describes as “ausreichend” (adequate). The reviewer praised the cleaning performance and the software updater, and said the program can deactivate programs. The criticism was more specific: the tested release had no autostart manager, no turbo mode, and no live optimisation, which the reviewer said limited its ability to tune a sluggish PC. An economy mode was also absent from that version.

This is a single editorial review of one release from 2024. It is not a controlled benchmark, and it does not confirm the feature set of the current release. It is still the most recent independent assessment found in the sources, and it points in the same direction as AVG’s own feature list: cleanup is the stronger part of the product, while performance tuning was thinner than the marketing suggests.

The 2014 figures: what they are and what they are not

AVG’s Performance Test Whitepaper for New AVG PC TuneUp (version 2.0, dated October 1, 2014, and naming Sandro Villinger as its author) is the only source in the material that publishes detailed speed and battery numbers. It covers the older AVG PC TuneUp, not the current AVG TuneUp, and its results are vendor-run.

Test (2014 whitepaper) Before After Reported change Vendor’s attribution
Daily tasks on one older desktop, measured by PCMark 8 score 1,546 points 1,819 points 18% faster AVG PC TuneUp optimisation setup
Working-and-playing battery scenario 3 h 26 min 5 h 27 min 59% longer Economy Mode and Flight Mode, including CPU throttling and disabling unnecessary hardware
Battery while gaming 1 h 32 min 2 h 55 min Reported in the whitepaper Not separately stated
Battery while playing HD movies 4 h 5 min 6 h 8 min Reported in the whitepaper Not separately stated

The whitepaper describes its battery method: a looping PCMark Home workload, a 3D game, and a 1080p movie loop, with each battery run performed three times and averaged. It says the tests were carried out in a controlled environment and also acknowledges that perfect accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Those details explain how the historical numbers were produced. They do not show what the current product does on your hardware, and the 2014 hardware and software are not current.

How to test a claim on your own computer

If you want to know whether AVG TuneUp helps your machine, a fair test is more useful than any marketing figure. Use this sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the computer model, operating system build, and exact AVG TuneUp version.
  2. Before running any cleanup, note the free space on the system drive and the number of startup items you have.
  3. Run a repeatable workload (for example, the same set of applications opened in the same order) and time it, and note how long the machine takes to reach a usable state after a restart.
  4. For battery tests, fix the screen brightness, power plan, and running applications, and run the same looping workload each time.
  5. Apply the TuneUp changes you intend to use, reviewing each item before deletion, and then repeat steps 2 and 3 under the same conditions.
  6. Report storage recovered separately from responsiveness and battery runtime. A gain in one does not prove a gain in the others.

Label each result by its source. A vendor claim, an independent review, and your own controlled test are different kinds of evidence and should not be merged into one verdict.
