Automotive engineering services design, integrate, test, and maintain a vehicle’s electrical/electronic (E/E) systems, embedded software, sensors, connectivity, safety processes, and data services. ADAS projects focus on helping an engaged driver sense hazards and control the vehicle; telematics projects move vehicle data between sensors, communications networks, cloud systems, and users. A capable engineering partner must also manage functional safety, cybersecurity, software updates, regulatory evidence, and post-production support.
What automotive engineering services include
Modern vehicles are software-defined systems made from distributed electronic control units (ECUs), sensors, actuators, networks, embedded code, cloud services, and user interfaces. Automotive engineering services can cover one subsystem or the complete lifecycle from concept through production, operation, service, and decommissioning.
Electrical and electronic architecture
- Vehicle and domain architecture, ECU allocation, network design, gateways, diagnostics, and power distribution.
- Controller-area network (CAN), CAN FD, LIN, automotive Ethernet, and other in-vehicle communications.
- Power integrity, grounding, electromagnetic compatibility, signal integrity, thermal constraints, and hardware bring-up.
- Interface control documents, requirements traceability, supplier integration, and production-release support.
Embedded software and controls
- Real-time operating systems, device drivers, middleware, control algorithms, diagnostics, bootloaders, and calibration.
- Software architecture, requirements management, model-based development, code reviews, configuration management, and release governance.
- Over-the-air (OTA) update mechanisms, rollback handling, version compatibility, and field monitoring.
Safety, security, and compliance
- Hazard analysis, safety goals, Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) work, safety cases, and evidence packages.
- Cybersecurity threat analysis, secure architecture, vulnerability management, incident response, and post-production monitoring.
- Verification, validation, regulatory documentation, type-approval support, and audit preparation.
ADAS is driver assistance, not self-driving
Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) combine sensors, software, and vehicle controls to warn a driver or assist with a driving task. The driver remains responsible for supervising the vehicle unless a separately approved automated-driving function changes that responsibility under a defined operating design domain.

Automation levels in practical terms
| Level | What the system does | Driver responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Level 0 | Provides momentary warnings or interventions, such as a warning or emergency intervention, without sustained control. | Performs the driving task and continuously monitors the environment. |
| Level 1 | Provides continuous assistance with either steering or acceleration and braking. | Remains engaged, supervises the system, and performs the other driving functions. |
| Level 2 | Provides continuous assistance with both steering and acceleration or braking in supported conditions. | Remains fully engaged and must monitor the road and system at all times. |
| Higher automation | May perform more of the driving task within a defined operational design domain. | Responsibilities, fallback behavior, approvals, and user handover depend on the specific system and jurisdiction. |
Engineering services for automated driving therefore require more than an ADAS feature list. They must define the operational design domain, fallback strategy, human-machine interface, validation evidence, regulatory route, and responsibilities when the system reaches or leaves its supported conditions.
Typical ADAS engineering work
- Define the item and use cases. Specify the function, supported roads and speeds, weather assumptions, driver role, interfaces, and failure responses.
- Select and integrate sensors. Typical modalities include cameras, radar, lidar, ultrasonic sensors, inertial sensors, wheel-speed signals, and positioning inputs. The choice depends on range, field of view, environmental performance, packaging, cost, and redundancy needs.
- Build perception and fusion. Software detects lanes, vehicles, pedestrians, signs, and free space, then combines measurements into a consistent scene representation with confidence and uncertainty information.
- Develop decision and control logic. The system determines whether to warn, brake, steer, or request driver intervention, while respecting vehicle dynamics and safety constraints.
- Design the human-machine interface. Visual, audible, and haptic signals must communicate system status, warnings, limitations, and takeover requests without creating unsafe ambiguity.
- Calibrate and validate. Sensor alignment, thresholds, timing, and control parameters are tuned, then checked in simulation, software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, proving-ground tests, and controlled on-road scenarios.
What vehicle telematics engineering covers
Telematics connects the vehicle to positioning systems, wireless networks, backend software, and user applications. A complete project follows the data path rather than stopping at the in-vehicle gateway.
The end-to-end telematics stack
- Vehicle data acquisition: read signals from ECUs, sensors, diagnostics interfaces, and dedicated telematics control units.
- Gateway and edge processing: filter, normalize, timestamp, buffer, encrypt, and prioritize data before transmission.
- Connectivity: select cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, satellite, or other links for the target regions, coverage, bandwidth, latency, and subscription model.
- Positioning: combine satellite navigation with vehicle signals or inertial data where the use case requires improved continuity or accuracy.
- Cloud services and APIs: ingest events, store histories, expose authenticated interfaces, run rules and analytics, and integrate with fleet or enterprise systems.
- Applications: deliver dashboards, mobile features, dispatch tools, alerts, diagnostics, and service workflows.
- Operations and governance: manage identities, consent, retention, access controls, cybersecurity monitoring, incident response, and service availability.
Common telematics use cases
- Fleet operations: utilization reporting, route monitoring, geofencing, maintenance alerts, driver-safety analytics, and incident reconstruction.
- Consumer connected services: remote vehicle status, charging or fuel information, emergency assistance, navigation, and account-linked features.
- Diagnostics and service: remote trouble-code collection, condition monitoring, predictive-maintenance signals, and technician support.
Data ownership and purpose must be decided early. A technically functional pipeline can still fail if the contract does not define who may access raw signals, derived data, logs, APIs, and models, or how long records are retained.

Vehicle-electronics architecture and integration
ADAS and telematics depend on the wider E/E architecture. A camera algorithm may need vehicle-speed, steering-angle, brake, map, and driver-monitoring data. A telematics gateway may need to isolate safety-critical networks from external connectivity while still supporting diagnostics and updates.
Integration questions engineers must answer
- Which ECU owns each signal, and what are its timing, accuracy, freshness, and fault indications?
- How are messages authenticated, prioritized, routed, and isolated across networks?
- What happens when a sensor, communication link, power rail, or software component fails?
- Can a software update preserve compatibility across ECU versions and supplier releases?
- How are calibration data, diagnostic trouble codes, logs, and service tools controlled?
UNECE reported in 2020 that vehicles could contain up to 150 ECUs and about 100 million lines of software code, with software projected to reach 300 million lines by 2030. These are dated UNECE figures, not a universal current count, but they illustrate why interface ownership, configuration control, and evidence management are central engineering tasks.
Standards and regulations that shape the work
Functional safety: ISO 26262
ISO 26262-7:2018 applies to safety-related electrical/electronic systems in series-production road vehicles. It includes requirements and work products for production, operation, service, decommissioning, and the planning activities that support them. A service provider should be able to show hazard analysis, safety goals, functional and technical safety concepts, ASIL-related work, verification records, and traceability from requirements to tests.

ISO 26262 does not address nominal performance. Passing a functional-safety process does not by itself prove that an object detector, lane model, or control function performs adequately in normal conditions. Providers need complementary performance-validation methods and evidence.
Cybersecurity: ISO/SAE 21434 and UNECE requirements
ISO/SAE 21434:2021 defines engineering requirements for cybersecurity risk management in road-vehicle E/E systems. It complements ISO 26262 and supports work needed for UNECE cybersecurity and software-update regulations.
When comparing providers, ask for evidence of item definition, threat analysis and risk assessment, security goals, cybersecurity concepts, supplier interfaces, verification, vulnerability handling, incident response, and post-production monitoring. A process description without examples of closed findings, maintained assets, and response ownership is weak evidence.

UNECE regulations and market approval
UNECE’s Working Party on Automated/Autonomous and Connected Vehicles (GRVA) covers ADAS, automated-driving systems, braking, steering, cybersecurity, and software updates. Examples include:
| Regulation | Area identified by UNECE |
|---|---|
| UN Regulation No. 171 | Driver-control assistance |
| UN Regulation No. 157 | Automated lane keeping |
| UN Regulations Nos. 131 and 152 | Advanced emergency braking |
| UN Regulation No. 155 | Cybersecurity |
| UN Regulation No. 156 | Software updates |
Applicability depends on vehicle category, function, approval route, and target market. UNECE rules are implemented through contracting-party regimes, so a supplier should identify the exact markets and approval authorities rather than promise generic “global compliance.”

Verification, validation, and evidence
Engineering evidence should match the risk and the claim being made. Simulation can provide broad scenario coverage; software-in-the-loop checks algorithms and integrations; hardware-in-the-loop exercises real ECUs and timing; proving-ground work evaluates repeatable physical scenarios; and controlled on-road testing exposes operational variability. Independent assessment may be appropriate for safety cases, cybersecurity, or regulatory submissions.

Questions that expose capability gaps
- Which standards editions and regulatory interpretations are used for this project, and who maintains them?
- Can you show a redacted traceability chain from requirement through design, test, defect disposition, and release?
- Who owns the item definition, threat analysis, safety case, calibration data, and field incidents?
- How are supplier changes, software bills of materials, vulnerabilities, and emergency updates handled after launch?
- What tools, models, test assets, and documentation will the customer receive at handover?
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling ADAS self-driving: describe the supported automation level and driver obligation precisely.
- Treating ISO 26262 as a complete approval: add nominal-performance validation, cybersecurity, and market-specific regulatory work.
- Scoping telematics only as a device: include vehicle interfaces, networks, cloud, APIs, applications, operations, privacy, and security.
- Leaving the operating domain vague: document roads, speeds, weather, lighting, traffic, geographic limits, and fallback behavior.
- Stopping at launch: budget for monitoring, incident response, OTA governance, vulnerability fixes, service, and eventual decommissioning.
- Accepting certificates without evidence: request current editions, project artifacts, test coverage, unresolved-risk treatment, and named accountability.
A practical engagement sequence
- Frame the outcome: define the vehicle, feature, market, user, operating domain, and business or safety objective.
- Map dependencies: inventory sensors, ECUs, networks, cloud services, suppliers, data flows, and external interfaces.
- Set assurance targets: establish safety, cybersecurity, performance, privacy, availability, and regulatory requirements.
- Build the architecture: allocate functions, define interfaces, select communication and update mechanisms, and document ownership.
- Develop incrementally: maintain requirements, models, software, hardware, calibration, and supplier baselines under configuration control.
- Validate against scenarios: combine simulation, laboratory tests, physical tests, and operational monitoring with traceable evidence.
- Prepare release and approval: complete safety and cybersecurity cases, regulatory documents, service procedures, and update governance.
- Operate and improve: monitor field performance, investigate incidents, patch vulnerabilities, and feed verified findings into subsequent releases.
The Bottom Line
The right automotive engineering partner can connect ADAS, telematics, and vehicle electronics into one controlled lifecycle. Select on demonstrable safety and cybersecurity processes, complete data-path architecture, validation evidence, market-specific regulatory knowledge, and the ability to support the vehicle after production.
