Automatic emergency braking (AEB) detects an imminent collision and automatically applies the vehicle’s service brakes to help avoid impact or reduce its severity. Depending on the system, it may brake when the driver does not react or add braking force when the driver brakes too lightly. AEB is a driver-assistance feature, not self-driving technology: the driver remains responsible for watching the road and controlling the vehicle.
What is automatic emergency braking?
NHTSA defines AEB as a system that detects an imminent collision with vehicles, objects, or other road users in or near the vehicle’s path and automatically controls the service brakes to avoid or mitigate the collision. The key distinction is that AEB can intervene with the brakes; a warning alone is not AEB.
The system’s purpose is to reduce the chance or severity of a crash. It cannot guarantee that a collision will be prevented, and its availability and operating limits can vary by vehicle.

How does automatic emergency braking work?
AEB uses information from the vehicle’s hazard-detection systems to identify a potential collision, then may apply the brakes if the risk is imminent. NHTSA’s general guidance does not specify one sensor arrangement or a universal activation threshold, so consult the owner’s manual for the capabilities and limits of a particular vehicle.

Forward collision warning versus AEB
Forward collision warning alerts the driver to a possible frontal crash. It does not, by itself, apply the brakes. AEB is the automatic braking intervention that may follow when the system detects an imminent collision.
Two braking behaviors: DBS and CIB
- Dynamic brake support (DBS): Adds braking force when the driver has started braking but has not pressed the pedal hard enough to address the detected crash risk.
- Crash imminent braking (CIB): Applies the brakes when the system detects an imminent crash and the driver has not braked.
Pedestrian AEB
Pedestrian AEB applies the same basic idea to a pedestrian detected in front of the vehicle: the system can brake if the driver has not acted to avoid a crash. It is related to vehicle or lead-object AEB, but addresses a different kind of road user.

What U.S. AEB requirements apply to new vehicles?
In April 2024, NHTSA finalized Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 127 (FMVSS 127). It covers nearly all U.S. light vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less. The rule sets performance requirements for lead-vehicle AEB and pedestrian AEB, with covered new vehicles required to meet the standard by September 2029. These are regulatory requirements for covered vehicles, not evidence that every vehicle currently on the road has AEB or meets the standard.

- It requires automatic braking for an imminent collision with a lead vehicle at speeds up to 90 mph.
- For pedestrian detection in daylight and darkness, it requires automatic braking at speeds up to 45 mph.
NHTSA projected that the standard would save at least 360 lives and prevent at least 24,000 injuries each year. These figures are the agency’s projections associated with the rule, not observed results.

How are AEB systems tested?
SAE International’s J3087_202504 recommended practice, revised April 14, 2025, covers vehicle-level tests in which a vehicle approaches a stopped, slower, or decelerating lead vehicle in its forward path. The tester selects conditions such as speed and deceleration for the intended test; the practice does not establish one universal scenario or threshold for every AEB system.
When comparing a vehicle’s AEB capabilities, check which hazards and conditions its system is designed to address and what its manufacturer says about operating limits. NHTSA and SAE materials describe system categories and test scope, but model-specific behavior should be verified in the vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Does AEB make a vehicle self-driving?
No. NHTSA classifies AEB as a Level 0, momentary driver-assistance technology. It is a brief intervention, not a system that takes over the driving task. The driver must remain attentive and responsible for the vehicle even when AEB is available.
