An automated time tracker records computer activity in the background so you can review it later and turn relevant work into time entries. That can help recover forgotten hours, but it does not guarantee that activity is assigned to the right project or ready for client billing without review. Two documented options are Toggl Track, which offers an activity timeline and separate timer automation, and Timely, which uses its Memory desktop apps for automatic capture.
What an automated time tracker actually does
Automatic tracking generally means the app captures information about activity on your computer while you work. Depending on the product, that may include the apps you use, websites or page titles, window activity, and timestamps. You then review the captured information and decide what belongs in your timesheet.
That is different from a timer that starts and stops on its own, and different again from software that correctly identifies every task or project without your input. Toggl documents both an activity timeline for review and Auto-Tracker behavior tied to the active application or window. Timely describes automatic capture through its Memory desktop apps. Neither description establishes perfect task classification.

What gets recorded, and what happens to it
Toggl Track
Toggl’s product page says recorded app and website activity stays on the device and is not shared until you copy it into time entries. However, Toggl Support says Timeline data can be stored locally and synced to Toggl’s servers. Those statements are not identical: do not assume that all timeline activity always remains only on your computer. Review Toggl’s current settings and data policy for the behavior that applies to your setup. Timely
Timely says Memory Tracker records active-app page titles and timestamps and describes its approach as private by design. That is the company’s own privacy statement, not an independent audit. In either case, captured titles or activity details may reveal sensitive work context. Consider which apps or sites should be excluded, who can access the resulting records, and whether the tracker is appropriate for confidential work. Vendor privacy claims should not be treated as independent verification.

Choose based on your workflow and platform
- You want to reconstruct a day from a reviewable timeline: Toggl documents a timeline where you select activity to turn into time entries. Check its current desktop-app support and available settings.
- You want passive capture through a dedicated desktop app: Timely’s automatic capture uses its Memory app for Mac or Windows. Do not rely on its standalone Chrome Memory extension, which Timely says is no longer maintained.
- You expect the tracker to assign every task automatically: The documented workflows do not establish that. Plan to review and categorize captured activity yourself.
- You work with client or billable hours: Use captured activity as a reconstruction aid, then check entries against calendars, project records, deliverables, or other work records before submitting them.
- You handle sensitive information: Read the vendor’s current data and privacy terms, inspect available exclusions and settings, and confirm access controls for your configuration before turning capture on.
Set up a tracker without trusting the capture blindly
- Confirm platform support. Check the vendor’s current documentation for your operating system and required desktop app. For Timely, automatic tracking requires the Mac or Windows Memory desktop app.
- Review capture and exclusion settings. Decide which apps or sites should be recorded or excluded. Toggl’s desktop documentation describes Auto-Tracker and app exclusion/settings information: Toggl desktop-app data and settings documentation.
- Understand storage and access before use. Read the current vendor privacy policy and product settings rather than relying on a short marketing description. In particular, account for Toggl Support’s statement that Timeline data can sync to its servers.
- Review captured activity regularly. Convert only relevant activity into entries, correct labels and projects, and remove personal or irrelevant activity where the product permits.
- Verify consequential timesheets. Before sending a client invoice or submitting work hours, compare entries with independent work records. Automatic capture records activity; it does not prove that every minute was billable or assigned correctly.
