An automated chess board that plays you is a physical board that senses your moves and mechanically moves its own pieces in response. The 2022 Hackaday project by Greg06 used reed switches to detect piece occupancy and an electromagnet on an XY mechanism to move magnetized pieces; newer commercial boards package similar movement with chess engines and app connectivity.

What an automated chess board does

Unlike a chess app, an automated board lets you move physical pieces on a real board. Sensors track the position, a chess engine chooses a response, and a mechanism moves the computer’s pieces. Depending on the design, the system may also recognize which piece is on a square, connect to online chess services, or provide an onboard opponent.

These capabilities are not universal. A board that moves pieces automatically may differ from another in how it detects your moves, whether it identifies piece types, what engine it uses, and whether online play depends on a phone app.

How the DIY board moves pieces

In the project profiled by Hackaday in 2022, Greg06’s board used reed switches to detect whether squares were occupied. An XY motion system carried an electromagnet beneath the board; the magnet pulled pieces fitted with small magnets across the surface. This moves pieces without a robotic arm gripping each one.

An Arduino ran Micro Max, a compact chess algorithm. An LCD and buttons provided a chess clock and feedback when a player made an illegal move. The project illustrates the core idea: combine board sensing, chess logic, and a physical actuator so the computer can respond on the same board.

Commercial example: Chessnut Move

Chessnut describes Move as a “Robotic self-moving chessboard.” Its current product page lists automatic multi-piece movement, full-piece recognition with 1 mm recognition resolution, support for Chess.com and Lichess through supported apps, and a built-in Stockfish 17 engine. The page listed the plastic-piece version at $719, with $899 shown as the crossed-out comparison price, when accessed in 2026. How to compare automated chess boards

What to compare Why it matters
Automatic movement Confirm whether the board physically moves the opponent’s pieces, and whether it supports moving several pieces for setup or special positions.
Move and piece recognition Some systems detect occupancy; others claim to recognize the piece type. Do not assume full-piece recognition from automatic movement alone.
Engine and playing strength Check which engine is included and whether difficulty can be adjusted. A specific engine name does not by itself establish a playing rating.
Online play and apps Determine which services are supported, whether an app is required, and which features depend on a connection.
Setup and captured pieces Look for support for puzzles, custom positions, reset workflows, and a practical place to put captured pieces.
Physical use Consider board dimensions, charging, movement speed, and noise. Confirm details with the manufacturer where they are not stated.
Price and support Compare a current retailer or manufacturer quote and warranty/support terms; historical catalog prices are not current offers.

Historical examples are not current prices

A December 2020 US Chess Federation sales catalog listed the Square Off Kingdom at $449 and the Square Off Grand Kingdom at $499. Its descriptions included automated piece movement, internet or across-the-board play, and 20 difficulty levels; the Grand Kingdom listing also mentioned onboard storage for captured pieces. The catalog also listed the DGT Centaur at $399.95 and said it adjusted automatically to a player’s strength. These are historical catalog listings, not present-day prices or confirmation of current availability. See the US Chess Federation’s 2020 sales catalog.

Can you build a robotic chess board?

Yes. Maker projects show practical ways to combine an XY mechanism, an electromagnet, board sensing, and chess software. One open-source ChessBoard repository documents stepper motors for X/Y movement, an electromagnet, Raspberry Pi control, voice commands, and DRV8825 motor controllers. It is a maker reference, not evidence of a finished or independently tested consumer product. Explore the ChessBoard repository.

A 2025 conference chapter describes the same broad architecture: detect a player’s moves, calculate a response with a chess engine, then move pieces using an XY-axis magnetic actuator. That supports the feasibility of the design approach, but does not establish consumer reliability or tested performance. Read the 2025 conference chapter.

Choosing between a DIY build and a commercial board

A DIY build makes sense if the engineering is part of the appeal and you are prepared to integrate sensing, motion control, and chess software. A commercial product is the more direct option if you want a packaged board with documented app or engine features, but confirm the precise functions, service compatibility, price, and support terms before buying. The Hackaday project, maker repository, academic design, and commercial products use different designs; their capabilities should not be treated as interchangeable.
