The EM6156 combines a 5 V low-dropout regulator, voltage supervision, reset control and a software watchdog in one automotive-qualified IC. It is specified for 120 mA output, but thermal conditions affect the maximum usable load. More importantly for new designs, EM Microelectronic currently recommends using the EM6323 instead; available information does not establish that it is a drop-in replacement.
What the EM6156 integrates
The EM6156 is an automotive LDO regulator with a built-in voltage monitor and watchdog. Its voltage supervision can assert an active-low reset when the monitored input falls below an internal reference; a power-on reset delay is also specified. The watchdog monitors software activity: if the software does not clear it within the selected interval, the device can reset the system. Electronic Design described the same combination of regulation, voltage monitoring and software monitoring in its October 8, 2008 product article: Auto-Grade LDO Integrates Watchdog.
This integration can reduce the number of separate components needed for basic supply supervision and recovery. It does not eliminate the need to verify reset polarity, threshold, delay and watchdog-clearing behavior against the complete circuit and the exact ordered variant.

These values are manufacturer specifications. For design limits and test conditions, use the datasheet revision applicable to the exact device suffix rather than assuming that a headline rating covers every operating condition. The manufacturer’s EM6156 product page links product information and identifies the thermal qualification on output current.

Reset thresholds and watchdog timing vary by option
The manufacturer lists selectable reset thresholds of 2.9 V, 3.0 V, 4.4 V and 4.6 V, plus watchdog timeout options of approximately 6.2 ms, 102 ms, 1.6 s and 25.6 s. These are variant-dependent choices, not settings available on every EM6156. The datasheet’s option coding identifies the combination associated with a particular part suffix.
Choose the threshold and timeout from system requirements, then confirm the precise values, reset delay and watchdog-clearing conditions in the datasheet for the selected suffix. The manufacturer product page provides access to the EM6156 datasheet and fact sheet; consult the relevant revision for detailed timing and limits.

Lifecycle guidance for new designs
EM Microelectronic’s current product page states: “Note: for new designs, EM recommends using EM6323”. Its obsolescence information page also lists the EM6156 among products replaced by new ones or not recommended for new designs. Treat the EM6156 as a part requiring lifecycle verification, not as an unqualified new-design recommendation.

The manufacturer’s recommendation alone does not establish that the EM6323 is pin-compatible or functionally equivalent. Before considering it for an existing circuit or new design, compare its official datasheet and package/pinout with the required output, current and thermal limits, input protection, reset behavior, watchdog timing, temperature range and automotive qualification. Current inventory and the exact orderable variant should also be checked with an authorized source.

What to verify before using the part
- Exact suffix and options: match the ordered variant to the required reset threshold and watchdog timeout.
- Thermal headroom: calculate dissipation in the intended input, output and ambient-temperature conditions instead of assuming 120 mA is always available.
- Vehicle electrical conditions: compare the circuit’s real transient and reverse-battery requirements with the specified device limits; the listed protection ratings are not universal vehicle-profile compliance.
- System reset behavior: verify reset output polarity, threshold, delay and response to a watchdog timeout against the processor and system requirements.
- Lifecycle and sourcing: confirm current availability and orderable status, especially for a production design.
