CEP Energy’s proposed 1.2-gigawatt battery at Kurri Kurri, New South Wales, was announced in 2021. A contemporaneous report forecast staged operations from 2023, but the sources available here do not verify whether the project was built, cancelled or remains active. The 1.2 GW figure describes power capacity—not stored energy—so it does not reveal how long the battery could discharge.

What was the Kurri Kurri battery proposal?

CEP Energy proposed a grid-scale battery at Kurri Kurri in New South Wales. New Atlas reported the 1.2 GW proposal on 4 February 2021, describing it at the time as the world’s biggest battery. The report said operations were expected to begin in stages in 2023 and that CEP Energy had not yet selected a battery supplier. Those were plans and expectations reported in 2021, not confirmation that construction or commissioning followed. New Atlas’s 2021 report

What happened to the project?

The project’s present delivery status is not established by the sources cited here. The 2021 forecast has passed, but that alone does not show whether the proposal advanced, changed, or was abandoned. The prudent answer is that its outcome remains unverified—not that it is operating or cancelled.

What does 1.2 GW tell you—and what is missing?

Gigawatts measure power: the rate at which a battery can charge or discharge. Energy capacity, measured in megawatt-hours (MWh) or gigawatt-hours (GWh), indicates how much energy it can store. The New Atlas report gives the Kurri Kurri proposal’s 1.2 GW power rating but does not state an energy-capacity figure. Without a comparable energy figure, its discharge duration cannot be calculated from the reported rating.

For example, Octopus Australia announced a separate project, Hanworth, near Bannaby, west of Bowral, in 2026. Octopus described Hanworth as 1.2 GW / 4.8 GWh. That energy figure belongs to Hanworth; it cannot be transferred to CEP Energy’s Kurri Kurri proposal. Octopus Australia

Was it really the world’s biggest battery?

“Biggest” needs a metric and a date. A comparison by power capacity (MW or GW) can produce a different ranking from one by energy capacity (MWh or GWh). It also matters whether the comparison includes proposals or only batteries that are operating. The Kurri Kurri claim was reported in 2021 as a proposal; its reported 1.2 GW is not enough to establish an energy-capacity ranking.

EF ECOFLOW 12kWh Power Station: DELTA Pro Ultra with Extra Battery
  • One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
  • Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
  • Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
  • Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
  • Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.

Later Australian projects illustrate why the measures should be kept distinct. The Australian government’s Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) tender records list projects including Boddington Giga Battery in Western Australia at 324 MW / 1,200 MWh. Separately, the government said 15 projects successful in CIS Tender 8 together totalled 4.2 GW / 16.1 GWh in June 2026. That is a portfolio total, not one battery, and neither figure establishes what happened at Kurri Kurri. Australian government CIS information Australian government news releases

When comparing claims about battery size, check:

  • Power capacity and energy capacity separately, including any stated duration.
  • Whether the project is proposed, approved, under construction, being commissioned, or in commercial operation.
  • Its location, proponent and ownership, plus any named supplier or contractor.
  • The date and scope of the “largest” claim: one project or a group, and which metric is being ranked.

How does it differ from other New South Wales battery proposals?

Hanworth is a separate Octopus Australia proposal, not an announced successor to the Kurri Kurri project. Another distinct project, Eraring BESS North, appears in a federal environmental referral as an expansion that would add approximately 500 MW and 4,942 MWh, subject to detailed design. Its proposal and estimated 2028 construction start concern Eraring, not Kurri Kurri. Federal environmental referral portal

What the proposal’s benefits do—and do not—establish

Grid batteries can store electricity and return it to the grid later, but the sources cited here do not quantify a specific effect of the Kurri Kurri proposal on grid reliability, consumer bills or profitability. In a 24 June 2026 release about CIS Tender 8—not about CEP Energy’s proposal—Energy and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen said: “These batteries will soak up cheap renewable energy during the day and send it back into the grid when demand is highest, helping keep the lights on and bills down.” That describes the government’s rationale for those tender projects; it is not a measured outcome for Kurri Kurri. Australian government release, 24 June 2026
