ASUS Aura RGB and ARGB are not interchangeable. In ASUS motherboard documentation, “Aura RGB” refers to a conventional 12V, 4-pin RGB header; ASUS calls its 5V, 3-pin addressable connector an Addressable Gen 2 header. Match both voltage and connector type before connecting lighting: plugging a 5V ARGB strip into a 12V RGB header can damage it.

What’s the difference between Aura RGB and ARGB?

Aura RGB is ASUS’s name for its conventional RGB header. ARGB means addressable RGB: compatible hardware and control systems can address individual LEDs, enabling patterns that vary across a strip or device. A conventional RGB strip is controlled as a lighting device rather than as individually addressable pixels.

Feature Conventional RGB / ASUS Aura RGB Addressable RGB / ASUS Addressable Gen 2
Example motherboard voltage 12V 5V
Example connector 4-pin 3-pin, commonly with one position blocked or missing
Lighting control Conventional RGB control; do not assume per-LED effects Individual LED control may be available, depending on the device, motherboard, and software
Example ASUS header name Aura RGB Addressable Gen 2
Example MSI header name JRGB JRAINBOW

These are common connector-family descriptions, not a guarantee that every product uses an identical plug or supports the same effects. ASUS describes its Addressable Gen 2 connection as supporting individually addressable WS2812B strips. See ASUS’s connection guidance and MSI’s JRGB and JRAINBOW guidance for their documented examples.

Can you connect a 5V ARGB device to a 12V Aura RGB header?

No. A 5V ARGB lighting connector and a 12V RGB header differ electrically as well as physically. MSI warns that a 5V LED strip connected to its 12V JRGB port will be damaged. Do not force a connector, reverse it, or rely on lighting software to make the connection safe.

Before installation or removal, turn off system power. Align the cable’s arrow or marker with the matching voltage pin printed on the motherboard: +12V for conventional RGB or +5V for ARGB. ASUS provides connector guidance at its 5V and 12V RGB support page; MSI’s warning is in its JRGB and JRAINBOW installation guidance.

How to identify the right header and connector

  1. Find the exact motherboard model and revision. Check its official specifications and user manual for the header names, locations, voltages, and electrical limits.
  2. Check the lighting device’s label and manual. Confirm whether its lighting connector is 12V 4-pin RGB or 5V 3-pin ARGB. The word “RGB” in a product name alone does not establish compatibility.
  3. Keep lighting and fan connections distinct. A fan motor connector and a fan’s lighting connector perform different jobs. A 3-pin fan motor plug does not, by itself, mean the fan has ARGB lighting.
  4. Power down, then align the voltage marker. Match the cable arrow or marker to the motherboard’s labeled +12V or +5V pin, as appropriate. Do not force or reverse the plug.
  5. Check the board’s limits. Use the manual for the exact model and revision to confirm maximum current, supported LED count, and any combined limits across headers.

Why motherboard limits must be checked model by model

Voltage and pin count help identify the connector family, but they do not tell you how many LEDs a particular board can support or how much current its header can supply. Those limits vary by motherboard.

airgoo Addressable RGB PC LED Strip ARGB 5V 3-Pin
  • ✅ Two Addressable RGB LED Strips: Each led strip come with silicon rubber tube housing, overall dimension is 15.75 x 0.55 x 0.28 inches. Using environmentally friendly silicon rubber, no smell, soft, flexible, light diffusing helpful, but easily coated with dust, please note it.
  • ✅ Using built-in ic led lamp beads: Each LED Strip has 21 leds, control with argb 3-pin connector (+5V, DATA, GND), each led lamp bead can be individually controlled via specialized Airgoo AG-DRGB16 Signal RGB controller or motherboard's argb 3-pin header. Working voltage is +5V, cannot use other voltages for power supply, please note it.
  • ✅ Perfectly works with AG-DRGB16 Controller: Recommend to purchase our AG-DRGB16 Controller (Not Included) separately, compatible with SignalRGB, 16-Port independent channel for complex layered lighting setups, eliminating motherboard header limits and unifying multi-brand lighting setups effortlessly.
  • ✅ Easy to install: Thanks to the magnetic brackets, installing the AG-NEON-LS1 inside a PC case or on any other steel surface is a breeze.
  • ✅ PACKAGE INCLUDES: 1 x ADD RGB extension cable A, 1 x ADD RGB extension cable B, 2 x 15.7inch Neon Digital-RGB LED Strip, 12 x Magnetic Brackets.

For example, ASUS’s 2025-11-02 support guidance states 3A at 5V for its Addressable Gen 2 header, describes up to 500 LEDs, and states 3A at 12V for its Aura RGB header. These are figures from that guidance, not universal ratings. ASUS’s TUF GAMING B550-PRO manual gives a board-specific example: 3A at 5V and a combined maximum of 500 LEDs across its Addressable Gen 2 headers, plus 3A at 12V and a maximum strip length of 3m for its Aura RGB headers. Do not apply those example limits to a different board.

What if the motherboard has no 5V ARGB header?

Check whether the lighting-device manufacturer supports a compatible standalone ARGB controller. Fractal Design identifies an ARGB controller as an option for its Prisma AL fans when a motherboard lacks a 3-pin 5V header; its Prisma AL connection instructions describe that use case.

Verify the controller’s compatibility with the specific lighting device before buying or connecting it. A controller should not be assumed to convert 12V RGB into 5V ARGB unless its own documentation explicitly says so. If compatibility or wiring is unclear, follow the manuals for the motherboard, device, and controller rather than experimenting with a header.
