“Audio compression” can mean two different things: making an audio file smaller, or changing its loudness dynamics during mixing. To protect sound quality, avoid repeated lossy file conversions and avoid applying a compressor without a clear purpose. Keep a lossless master for exports, and judge dynamics processing by a level-matched comparison—not by loudness alone.
What does “audio compression” mean?
File compression changes how audio data is stored. Dynamic-range compression changes the level of the audio signal. They solve different problems: a compressed MP3 has not necessarily been processed by a studio compressor, and a dynamics compressor does not, by itself, make the file smaller.

A file extension alone may not tell you the full encoding details. Check the codec and its settings, as well as whether the destination supports the format.

Repeated lossy exports
Lossless encoding preserves the encoded source data when decoded. Lossy encoding removes information to reduce file size, and that discarded information cannot be recovered by converting the result later. If you have a lossless or uncompressed master, make each delivery encode from that master rather than converting one lossy file into another.

Choosing a codec or bitrate by name alone
Lossy encoding involves a trade-off between file size and the information retained. A higher bitrate or familiar extension does not, on its own, guarantee that an encode will sound transparent for your material and playback conditions. Choose a format the destination accepts, encode for the intended use, then listen to the actual result.
Assuming encoding leaves peaks unchanged
Lossy encoding can alter peak levels and may introduce artifacts. Do not assume the encoded file’s peaks will match the source or that a source that does not clip will necessarily produce an encoded file with the same peak behavior. Audition the target codec and bitrate, and check the exported file for clipping or audible problems.

For MP3 and AAC, iZotope’s Ozone 8 Codec Preview documentation recommends roughly 1 to 1.5 dB of headroom to reduce clipping risk. That is vendor guidance, not a universal standard or a requirement from a standards body.

What should you avoid when compressing dynamics?
Adding a compressor without a specific goal
A compressor reduces signal level above a threshold. The ratio controls how much the level is reduced above it; attack and release govern how quickly gain reduction changes. Compression can make a performance more consistent, but it is not mandatory on every track or master. Before using one, identify the problem you want to solve, then compare the processed signal with bypass at similar perceived loudness.

Using aggressive settings without listening for side effects
Fast attack or release settings and heavy gain reduction can damage transients, distort the sound, or create pumping. The appropriate settings depend on the source and the intended result; there is no one setting that works for every track. Listen to the material, rather than relying on a preset or a meter alone.
Confusing loudness with quality
Compression can reduce peaks and allow makeup gain, making the result louder. A louder version may seem better even when the processing has reduced desirable dynamics or changed the tone. Compare versions at similar perceived loudness before deciding which sounds better.

Overlooking background noise
Reducing the difference between loud and quiet moments and raising average level can make the noise floor more noticeable. Check quiet passages as well as loud ones when evaluating the result.

A limiter is related dynamics control, but it is not simply another name for an ordinary compressor. It commonly uses a much higher ratio and serves a peak-control purpose. The processing family overlaps, but their usual roles and settings differ. An ITU-R report discusses dynamic-range processing in broadcast contexts.

A practical quality check before delivery
- Keep a source master. Preserve a lossless or uncompressed version before creating lossy delivery files.
- Match the destination. Confirm the destination accepts the chosen format and settings; do not select a codec based on its extension alone.
- Encode from the master. Avoid making a new lossy encode from an existing lossy file when the master is available.
- Listen to the exported file. Check the actual target codec and bitrate for audible artifacts, peak changes, or clipping.
- Evaluate dynamics processing fairly. Compare compressor bypass and active processing at similar perceived loudness, listening for transient loss, pumping, distortion, and exposed noise.
No universal bitrate or compressor setting is established as best for every source and use. The useful choice depends on the codec, material, destination, and listening conditions.
