Audio-Technica makes headphones, microphones, turntables and phono cartridges, so no single product can establish the quality of the entire brand. The ATH-M50x is a useful example of its professional-monitor headphones: Audio-Technica describes it as passively isolating, while RTINGS notes that it has no built-in microphone. Those facts help explain who it may suit—and why it is not automatically the right choice for calls or every listening setup.
What does Audio-Technica make?
Audio-Technica’s company history describes a portfolio spanning headphones, microphones, turntables and phono cartridges. The company also says it believes high-quality audio should be accessible. That is the company’s stated philosophy, not an independent measure of product performance or value. Audio-Technica’s company history traces the VM phono-cartridge format to patents obtained in the United Kingdom and United States in 1971 and names products including the ATH-M50, AT2020 and AT-LP120-USB among notable introductions in the 2000s.
These examples show category breadth, not a current buying list. The history page describes the AT2020 as a cardioid condenser microphone and the original LP120-USB, introduced in 2007, as offering USB connectivity for digitizing records on a computer. It does not establish current availability for those specific versions, or provide comparative performance data for the categories.
What is the ATH-M50x designed for?
Audio-Technica positions the ATH-M50x as professional monitor headphones. The manufacturer says its circumaural design provides passive noise isolation and describes connecting it to audio equipment or directly to a microphone for monitoring. These are the manufacturer’s product descriptions; they should not be mistaken for evidence that the headphones cancel noise electronically or suit every recording setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Critically acclaimed sonic performance praised by top audio engineers and pro audio reviewers
- Proprietary 45 millimeter large aperture drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils
- Exceptional clarity throughout an extended frequency range, with deep, accurate bass response
- Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments
- 90 degree swiveling earcups for easy, one ear monitoring, and professional grade earpad and headband material delivers more durability and comfort
The model’s history helps explain its intended role. Audio-Technica dates the original M50 to 2007 and says the M50x followed feedback from professionals who used the headphones daily. In a 2024 project-page statement, product manager Hiroyasu Suzuki said: “we went out and asked professionals, the people actually using these headphones daily, what features they liked and what they wanted, and we used their feedback to improve the headphones, creating the M50x in 2014.” This account describes the company’s development process; it is not an independent performance assessment. Are Audio-Technica headphones good?
There is no well-supported brand-wide yes-or-no verdict in the cited material. Headphones, microphones, turntables and cartridges serve different jobs, and evidence about one model cannot establish how the other categories perform. For the ATH-M50x specifically, the sources establish its professional-monitor positioning, the manufacturer’s description of passive isolation, and the absence of an integrated microphone. They do not establish a comparative ranking against other headphones or a single quality score.

Listening impressions also need attribution. Audio-Technica’s India product page reproduces a TechRadar excerpt by Andrew Williams describing the ATH-M50x’s sound as energetic and bass-forward. That is Williams’s review opinion as quoted on a vendor page, not a measured specification or a company-wide finding. The product page and reproduced excerpt

No built-in microphone is noted by RTINGS in its independent ATH-M50x review. Treat it as headphones, not as an all-in-one headset with an integrated mic. If you need it for calls, streaming or gaming, plan for a separate microphone or choose a product that explicitly includes one; check the exact model’s connection and compatibility details before buying.

How to judge fit for your use
Start with the job the equipment needs to do, then check the exact model and setup. A monitor headphone is not a microphone, and brand history alone does not establish that a particular turntable or cartridge will work with your equipment.
- Studio monitoring: The ATH-M50x is officially positioned for professional monitoring. Confirm that its wired connection and other specifications fit your audio source and workflow.
- Everyday listening: Decide whether the product’s sound character, fit and isolation suit your preferences. The cited description of the M50x as energetic and bass-forward is an attributed review impression, not a guarantee of how every listener will hear it.
- Calls, gaming or streaming: The M50x lacks a built-in mic, so account for a separate microphone or select an explicitly mic-equipped headset.
- Recording: Choose a microphone based on the intended source, room and recording setup. The company history identifies the AT2020 as a cardioid condenser example, but does not establish its current availability or compare its performance with alternatives.
- DJ work or vinyl playback: Verify the particular headphone, turntable, cartridge and any required supporting components. The cited sources do not settle model-specific compatibility, preamp or stylus requirements.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—show
The cited material supports a focused account of Audio-Technica’s product categories and history, plus specific claims about the ATH-M50x. It combines company statements, an official product description, an attributed reviewer excerpt and an independent review page. Those evidence types answer different questions: company pages describe positioning and history; a reviewer’s adjective is opinion; and RTINGS supplies the cited microphone caveat.

It does not establish a brand-wide comparative ranking, a model-by-model buying comparison, or uniform quality across every product category. For a purchase, check the current regional product page for the precise model’s specifications, connections, warranty and availability, then match those details to the equipment and use case you actually have.
