Neither AT&T nor Verizon is an automatic winner for an income-focused investor. AT&T’s current annualized dividend is $1.11 per share, while Verizon declared a quarterly dividend of $0.7075 per share in September 2026. Those per-share amounts do not reveal which stock has the higher yield: that requires share prices from the same date. The more useful distinction is between AT&T’s stated dividend and 2026 free-cash-flow outlook, and Verizon’s first-half cash generation, leverage disclosure, and latest quarterly declaration.
How do AT&T and Verizon compare for dividend income?
Both companies disclose substantial cash returns to shareholders, but the evidence does not establish a verified current-yield winner. A dividend per share is not a yield: yield is the annual dividend divided by the share price, and the comparison is meaningful only when both prices use the same date.
| Measure | AT&T (NYSE: T) | Verizon (NYSE: VZ) |
|---|---|---|
| Declared dividend | $1.11 per common share annually; AT&T reported declaring that amount in both 2024 and 2025, and its 2026 second-quarter release said it expected to maintain the annualized amount. AT&T 2025 Annual Report; AT&T second-quarter 2026 results. | $0.7075 per share quarterly, declared in September 2026; four payments at that rate would total $2.83 per share over a year if the rate remains unchanged. Future dividends require board action. Verizon September 2026 declaration. |
| Recent cash generation | $4.7 billion in free cash flow for second-quarter 2026; full-year 2026 outlook of at least $18 billion. AT&T second-quarter 2026 results. | $10.2 billion in free cash flow for the first half of 2026, up 16% year over year; 2026 free-cash-flow-growth guidance was 9%–10%. Verizon second-quarter 2026 results. |
| Leverage disclosure | Management expected leverage to rise to about 3.2x after its Lumen and EchoStar transactions, then return to its 2.5x target range within about three years after the EchoStar transaction closes. AT&T second-quarter 2026 results. | Net unsecured debt to adjusted EBITDA was 2.5x at the end of second-quarter 2026. Verizon second-quarter 2026 results. |
The cash-flow periods in the table differ: AT&T’s figure is one quarter, while Verizon’s covers six months. Free cash flow and adjusted EBITDA are company-defined, non-GAAP measures, so read each issuer’s explanation rather than treating the figures as perfectly standardized.
What AT&T’s dividend and cash-flow outlook indicate
AT&T reported declaring $1.11 per common share in each of 2024 and 2025. Its second-quarter 2026 results said the annualized common dividend remained $1.11 and that the company expected to maintain that amount. This is management’s stated plan, not a guarantee of future board declarations. The annual report describes the company’s policy as taking account of stockholder expectations, funding needs, and long-term growth opportunities.

The company reported second-quarter 2026 free cash flow of $4.7 billion and forecast at least $18 billion for the full year. These are useful cash-generation figures to weigh against the dividend, but a quarterly result is not the same as a full-year outcome, and a forecast can change. AT&T also said it expected leverage to increase to about 3.2x after its Lumen and EchoStar transactions, with a return to its 2.5x target range within about three years after the EchoStar transaction closes. That timeline depends on the transaction closing and is a management expectation.
What Verizon’s dividend and cash-flow disclosures indicate
Verizon declared a $0.7075 quarterly dividend per share in September 2026, consistent with the previous quarter. If four quarterly payments remain at that rate, the annual total would be $2.83 per share; that arithmetic is not a commitment to maintain the rate. The company’s dividend announcement attributes its capital-return record to operational execution and sustainable cash flow, but that statement is management’s perspective rather than an assurance of future payments. Verizon’s declaration.

Verizon reported $10.2 billion of free cash flow in the first half of 2026, 16% higher than in the first half of 2025, and raised its full-year free-cash-flow-growth guidance to 9%–10%. It also reported net unsecured debt to adjusted EBITDA of 2.5x at the end of the second quarter. The debt ratio is a company-defined measure and is not directly interchangeable with AT&T’s leverage figures, which have different definitions and include a post-transaction expectation.
How to assess the debt and shareholder-return trade-offs
Leverage matters to dividend analysis because debt obligations compete for cash with dividends, investment, and other uses. But the two companies’ cited ratios should not be read as a head-to-head debt ranking: Verizon gave a quarter-end net-unsecured-debt-to-adjusted-EBITDA ratio, while AT&T discussed expected leverage after transactions and a later target. Compare the definitions, dates, and transaction assumptions in each company’s disclosures before drawing a conclusion.

Shareholder returns also include more than dividend payments. AT&T planned at least $45 billion in shareholder returns across 2026–2028 through dividends and share repurchases. Verizon reported returning $9.4 billion in total capital in the first half of 2026 and raised its full-year share-buyback target to up to $4.5 billion. Buybacks are not cash dividend income: they may affect the number of shares outstanding, but they do not pay a dividend directly to an investor who owns shares.
For context on historical distributions, Verizon’s 2025 full-year results reported $20.1 billion of free cash flow and $11.5 billion of cash dividend payments during 2025. Those are historical company-reported totals, not a forecast of future coverage. Verizon 2025 fourth-quarter and full-year results filed with the SEC.

Which stock may fit your income priorities?
- Focus on a stated per-share payout: AT&T’s annualized amount is $1.11; Verizon’s latest declared quarterly amount annualizes to $2.83 only if unchanged for four quarters. Neither raw figure establishes a higher yield.
- Focus on recent cash generation: Verizon reported first-half free cash flow and year-over-year growth; AT&T reported a second-quarter figure and a full-year forecast. The unlike periods make a direct comparison inappropriate without aligned reporting windows.
- Focus on debt alongside income: examine each company’s metric definition, timing, and transaction assumptions rather than ranking the two headline leverage figures as if they were identical.
- Focus on cash paid directly to shareholders: separate declared dividends from repurchases and broader “capital returned” totals. Only dividends are direct dividend income to the shareholder.
Before choosing, calculate each stock’s indicated yield from its latest annualized dividend rate and a share price from the same date, then consider whether the dividend policy, cash-flow trend, and debt trajectory fit your needs.
