Both atmospheric water generators (AWGs) and household dehumidifiers can condense moisture from air, but they are not interchangeable drinking-water appliances. An AWG intended to produce potable water includes treatment and storage controls; ordinary dehumidifier condensate is not established as safe to drink. For output and electricity, compare measured liters and energy use under the same temperature and relative humidity—not headline ratings taken under different conditions.

How do atmospheric water generators and dehumidifiers collect water?

Many condenser-style AWGs draw in air, cool it so moisture condenses on a coil, and collect the resulting water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compares that basic collection mechanism to a household dehumidifier. The important difference is the intended endpoint: an AWG designed for drinking water adds a treatment train, while a typical dehumidifier is built to remove moisture from a room, not to make potable water.

Some AWGs use other approaches, including desiccant systems. The device category alone does not determine its yield, energy performance, or water quality.

How much water does an atmospheric water generator make per day?

The EPA’s 2018 assessment gives a descriptive range of 1 to 20 liters per day for home AWG systems. That is context, not a guaranteed yield or a like-for-like buying benchmark: actual production varies with the temperature, relative humidity, and specific machine. Check the conditions attached to any manufacturer’s advertised rate.

The same EPA report notes that the commercial Watergen GEN-350 was described as capable of producing nearly 600 liters per day under optimal temperature and humidity. That figure concerns that commercial system under optimal conditions; it is not a household expectation.

A dehumidifier’s moisture-removal rating and an AWG’s drinking-water output may use different test methods and describe different endpoints. A dehumidifier may collect substantial condensate, but that does not make its output potable.

Which uses more electricity: an AWG or a dehumidifier?

The cited evidence does not establish a universal energy winner. A fair comparison is liters of water produced per kilowatt-hour under the same ambient temperature and relative humidity. Include treatment energy and standby consumption if they are part of the system being compared.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says colder, humid environments require more energy for atmospheric water generation than warmer, humid conditions. An efficiency claim without the relevant operating conditions and actual water output is therefore hard to apply to another home or climate.

Do not compare a dehumidifier’s moisture-removal rating directly with an AWG’s potable-water output as though they were measured on the same basis. The sources cited here do not provide a single watt-hour-per-liter figure that can be generalized to either appliance category.

A 2022 seasonal study examined water yield, energy use, efficiency, cost, and quality using electric-powered desiccant and compressor dehumidifiers. Its PubMed-indexed abstract reports that water collected by compressor-based methods in that study had conductivity as high as 180 μS/cm and turbidity as high as 190 NTU, with aluminum, iron, and manganese near or above U.S. EPA secondary drinking-water standards. Those are study-specific findings, not predictions for every dehumidifier or climate. Read the indexed study abstract.

Can you drink water from a dehumidifier?

Do not drink ordinary dehumidifier condensate. Condensation is water collection, not water purification. Water can pick up airborne contaminants or substances from coils and other surfaces, and a tank of stored water can support microbial growth. The reviewed sources do not establish that ordinary consumer dehumidifier tanks or materials meet potable-water requirements.

Use collected dehumidifier water only for an appropriate non-drinking purpose, and follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions. Do not assume that boiling or passing it through an unspecified filter makes it safe for drinking; the cited evidence does not validate those steps as a treatment method for dehumidifier condensate.

Is an atmospheric water generator safe to drink from?

An AWG can be intended to produce drinking water, but safety depends on the complete system: air filtration, water treatment or disinfection, surfaces that contact the water, and clean storage. The DOE says proper air filtration and water disinfection are needed for potable AWG production. It also notes that condensate can support bacterial growth during storage and may acquire heavy metals through contact with cooling coils. EPA’s guidance is explicit: “atmospheric condensate is not sterile and should be treated adequately prior to potable use.” EPA, Evaluation of Atmospheric Water Generation Technology: Microbial Water Quality (2018).

What EPA found in one AWG evaluation

EPA evaluated microbial water quality in one commercial Watergen GEN-350 over three months. In weekly samples, the agency did not detect Legionella or Mycobacterium, but found high heterotrophic plate counts in both treated and untreated water. EPA interpreted those counts as evidence of microbial instability and potential regrowth, and recommended adding chlorination or ozonation to that system’s treatment train. EPA cautions that this evaluation should not be directly transferred to other AWG systems.

What to verify before using an AWG for drinking water

  • Whether the specific unit is designed and documented for potable-water production, rather than merely collecting condensate.
  • Which air filtration, water treatment, and disinfection steps are included, and whether their performance is supported for that model.
  • How to clean the unit, replace filters, disinfect water-contact parts, and manage storage, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Whether the system’s treatment remains effective through storage and routine use; collection alone does not establish drinking-water safety.

Can an AWG provide water during a power outage?

Do not assume so. EPA’s 2019 life-cycle assessment modeled grid-connected AWGs in a U.S. long-term contamination scenario. It did not assess hurricanes or tornadoes that cause power outages and require rapid response. An AWG should not be treated as a dependable outage water source without a separate backup-power plan and model-specific evidence that the unit can operate under it. EPA, Life Cycle Assessment of Atmospheric Water Generation Technology (2019).

How should you choose between an AWG and a dehumidifier?

Start with the job you need done. Choose a dehumidifier for room moisture control, not as a drinking-water appliance. Consider an AWG for potable-water production only if the model is designed and documented for that purpose and its operating requirements fit your conditions.

  • Expected output: Compare liters per day at the temperature and relative humidity you actually expect, not an unqualified headline rate.
  • Electricity: Compare energy per liter under those same conditions, including treatment and standby loads where relevant.
  • Water quality: Check intended use and the specific filtration and disinfection steps, rather than inferring safety from the fact that water condensed.
  • Maintenance: Account for cleaning, filter replacement, disinfection, and storage requirements.
  • Power reliability: If the use case includes outages, verify backup-power needs and operation for the specific model.
  • Cost and environmental scope: Match the comparison to your use case. EPA’s life-cycle assessment compared AWGs with bottled water and reusable jugs for a defined long-term contamination scenario; it is not a general household cost ranking.

The EPA’s 2018 microbial-quality assessment and 2019 life-cycle assessment, along with the DOE’s overview of atmospheric water harvesting, provide context on treatment, operating conditions, and system use.
