The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature is transitioning to the Atmos Rewards Ascent Visa Signature. For an occasional Alaska flyer, its value depends less on how many points it earns than on whether you can use the Companion Fare and eligible checked-bag benefits. Alaska currently highlights a $99 Companion Fare plus taxes and fees, a free checked bag for the cardholder and up to six companions, and 3x points on eligible Alaska and Hawaiian purchases. The current annual fee and full card terms were not confirmed, so check the issuer’s live disclosures before applying or deciding whether to keep the card.
What is the Alaska Airlines Visa called now?
The card is being rebranded as the Atmos Rewards Ascent Visa Signature. Alaska says existing account numbers and benefits continue during the transition, so the familiar Alaska Airlines Visa Signature name may still appear on existing accounts and in older references. Current Alaska program materials use Atmos Rewards branding. Alaska’s Atmos Rewards announcement describes the change.

This is a co-branded airline card, so its strongest benefits are tied to eligible Alaska and Hawaiian travel rather than general-purpose spending. Alaska currently identifies 3x points on eligible Alaska and Hawaiian purchases, but the available official materials do not establish the complete current earning-rate table. Check the live card disclosures for all categories and conditions.

The Companion Fare lets an eligible cardholder book a second traveler on a qualifying itinerary for a $99 base fare plus applicable taxes and fees. Alaska’s 2025 announcement said the fare could be used on Alaska-operated and eligible regional flights, as well as Hawaiian Airlines flights within North America, including Hawaii. The booking is made through alaskaair.com, and codeshare flights are excluded. Alaska announced applicable taxes and fees starting at $23; the amount depends on the itinerary. That announced scope is not a guarantee that every route, fare, date, or traveler qualifies. Companion Fare codes have their own conditions. Alaska’s guidance says codes are issued to eligible cardholders, may require annual spending, are non-transferable, and expire one year after issuance. Check the terms attached to your specific certificate before planning travel. Alaska’s discount-code guidance covers the program’s rules.
Before you count on a Companion Fare
- Confirm that your certificate has been issued and note its expiration date.
- Check whether your certificate has a spending requirement and whether you have met it.
- Verify the carrier, route, eligible travelers, booking channel, and fare rules for the itinerary you want.
- Compare the total cost for two travelers—including taxes and fees—with the price of the alternatives you would actually book.
Do you get a free checked bag?
Alaska’s April 2026 partnership announcement lists one free checked bag for the cardholder and up to six companions traveling on the same reservation. Alaska also announced bag coverage for certain Hawaiian-operated flights: Alaska Visa Signature cardholders receive one free checked bag for themselves and up to six guests on the same reservation when using their card to book. These are conditional benefits, not a universal baggage waiver for every airline, itinerary, or separately booked guest. Check the current benefit terms for your route and reservation. See Alaska’s 2026 partnership announcement and its 2025 loyalty announcement.

What other benefits does the card offer?
Alaska and Hawaiian purchases
Current Alaska materials highlight 3x points on eligible Alaska and Hawaiian purchases. They do not establish every current earning category, so do not assume older rates remain in effect. Consult the issuer’s current pricing and rewards disclosures for the full schedule.
Alaska Lounge+
Alaska lists a $100 discount on an Alaska Lounge+ membership for Ascent cardholders. The discount is useful only if you would otherwise buy that membership and can make use of its access under the membership’s terms. Alaska’s partnership announcement identifies the discount.

Is the card worth it if you fly only a few times a year?
It can be, but occasional travel alone does not make the card worthwhile. Estimate value from benefits you expect to use, then compare that value with the current annual fee shown in the issuer’s application disclosures. The fee was not confirmed in the available current materials, so an older advertised fee should not be treated as today’s price.
- Companion Fare: Is a certificate likely to arrive, and can you use it before it expires on a trip where the total two-person fare is meaningfully lower?
- Checked bags: Do you check bags on eligible Alaska or Hawaiian travel, and will the people traveling with you be on the same reservation?
- Airline spending: Do you buy eligible Alaska or Hawaiian travel often enough for the card’s current 3x category to matter to you?
- Lounge membership: Would the $100 discount change a membership purchase you already expect to make, or is lounge access not part of your travel routine?
Do not treat a potential Companion Fare discount as guaranteed savings: its value depends on the itinerary, certificate terms, and the price of the trip you would otherwise take. Likewise, points do not have a fixed cash value established by the available card materials. If you fly other airlines, rarely check bags, or are unlikely to use the certificate, compare the card with a general travel card using current annual fees, rewards terms, and benefits—not historical card advertising.

Which terms should you verify before applying or renewing?
The current annual fee, APR, welcome offer, application eligibility rules, and complete rewards schedule were not established in the official materials available for this review. The January 2023 announcement reported a $95 annual fee, a $6,000 anniversary-year spending condition for new cardholders to receive an annual Companion Fare, and a limited-time welcome offer; those were terms announced at that time, not verified current terms. Alaska’s 2023 announcement is useful as historical context only.
Before you apply, rely on the current Bank of America application page and cardmember disclosures for the fee, APR, offer, eligibility, and rewards rules. Before renewing, check your account’s current benefits and the certificate terms actually issued to you. This review does not establish current rates or approval requirements.
