The Atmel Wi-Fi acquisition most directly tied to the Internet of Things (IoT) was its December 19, 2012 agreement to buy Ozmo, a maker of ultra-low-power Wi-Fi solutions. Atmel later made a separate Wi-Fi and Bluetooth acquisition in 2014. Today, Atmel is part of Microchip Technology, which provides current guidance for Atmel-branded products.
Which Wi-Fi company did Atmel buy for IoT?
Atmel announced a definitive agreement to acquire Ozmo, Inc. on December 19, 2012. Atmel described Ozmo as a provider of ultra-low-power Wi-Fi solutions and said the technology could help developers build smart connected devices, including products for the Internet of Things. The announcement also referred to Wi-Fi Direct-certified technology and communication across wireless personal area networks. Atmel’s Ozmo acquisition announcement
The deal was a wireless-technology portfolio expansion, not the purchase of a complete IoT platform. Nor does the acquisition itself represent a product that consumers can buy today.

- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
The July 7 announcement set terms of $140 million in cash, subject to working-capital adjustments, plus a possible earn-out of up to $30 million tied to revenue thresholds over two years. Those were announced terms; they do not establish the final amount paid. At the July 31 closing, Atmel CEO Steve Laub said the deal added 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and would accelerate the introduction of low-energy Bluetooth products.
Who owns Atmel now?
Microchip Technology announced an agreement to acquire Atmel on January 19, 2016, and completed the merger in July 2016. Microchip says Atmel no longer exists as a separate company and that Atmel’s products and technologies are under Microchip. Microchip’s Atmel FAQ · Microchip’s 2016 acquisition announcement
