The ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV is a 64 MB graphics card that combines Radeon 8500 graphics with analog TV tuning and capture, plus FireWire for digital video cameras. “DV” refers to its digital-video-camera capability—not a separate GPU or an HDTV tuner.

What the All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV is

The 8500DV uses the same R200 GPU architecture as the regular Radeon 8500; “8500DV” is the name of this multimedia card, not a distinct GPU design. AnandTech’s November 2001 preview described a 64 MB board with DDR memory, a DVI transmitter, a programmable silicon TV tuner, ATI Rage Theater analog capture, and an Agere/Lucent IEEE-1394 controller. ATI had not finalized the card’s clock speed at the time of that preview, so its sample did not establish a final speed. AnandTech’s 8500DV preview

What “DV” means—and what it does not

The card’s IEEE-1394 (FireWire) connection provides a way to capture digital video from a DV camcorder. Contemporary coverage describes one FireWire port on the card and another on a dongle; a power connector supplies connected FireWire devices. AnandTech’s 2002 coverage

The tuner is a separate feature. Its circuitry was described as programmable silicon, but the tuner still receives analog television; “digital” does not mean HDTV reception. AnandTech explicitly cautioned that it was not an HDTV tuner. AnandTech

Two different video-capture paths

Source Connection and function
Analog video device, such as a VCR Use the ATI input adapter and the card’s analog video and audio connections; Rage Theater handles analog capture.
DV camcorder Use IEEE-1394 (FireWire) to transfer digital video.
Television signal The programmable tuner handles analog TV reception; it is not an HDTV tuner.

The distinction matters when assembling a setup: a FireWire cable does not replace the analog input adapter, and the tuner is not a digital-TV receiver. The card’s connections and functions are described in AnandTech’s preview, its 2002 coverage, and the ATI Multimedia Center 8.5 User’s Guide.

Connecting and troubleshooting the card

The ATI Multimedia Center 8.5 guide includes a wiring diagram specifically for the 64 MB Radeon 8500DV. It differs from the diagram for the related 128 MB Radeon 8500 model, so follow the model-specific diagram rather than assuming the cards share the same audio wiring. ATI Multimedia Center 8.5 User’s Guide

  • No TV audio: Check the audio connection between the All-In-Wonder card and the sound card, as the manual directs.
  • No audio from an S-Video source: S-Video carries video, not sound. Connect the VCR’s left and right audio outputs separately.
  • Unstable or black-and-white video: Check the selected broadcast standard and country setting, confirm the antenna or cable signal is connected, and verify the chosen video input. The manual also warns that too many cable splitters can weaken the signal.
  • Missing or uncertain accessories: Check for the original ATI input/output adapter, FireWire dongle, auxiliary power connection, cables, software, and documentation. The card’s connector setup is model-specific; the sources do not establish that generic breakout cables will work.

These are instructions for period hardware and software. They do not establish that the card will receive present-day broadcasts or work with every current video source.

Drivers and compatibility today

AMD’s support page preserves historical driver and multimedia-software downloads, including Windows XP Catalyst 6.11 (released November 15, 2006), Windows XP Multimedia Center 9.14 (May 24, 2006), and a Windows 98/ME WDM driver package (June 9, 2004). These are dated legacy releases, not evidence of current support. AMD’s 8500DV downloads

  • Full support for DirectX 9.0 ensures future compatibility with next-generation games
  • Full support for the AGP 8X standard doubles available bandwidth for a more engaging gaming experience

The available sources do not establish Windows 10 or 11 support, compatibility with a contemporary Linux distribution, or operation on a particular modern motherboard. AnandTech also raised a possible AGP-controller compatibility concern in its 2001 preview because of the card’s added AGP 4X bridge, but reported that testing had not yet been completed. That is a historical concern, not a confirmed finding that the card is broadly incompatible. AnandTech’s preview

What to check before restoring or buying one

For a working setup, the card itself is only part of the equation. Verify that the exact card has the adapters and cables required for the inputs you intend to use, and that your system has a suitable AGP slot and a plan for legacy software. For DV-camera capture, confirm the camera’s FireWire connection and the required cable; for analog capture, confirm the ATI input adapter and separate audio leads where needed.
