Short answer: In the period covered by contemporary AnandTech testing, the Pentium 4 2.8C (Northwood) was usually faster than an Athlon XP 2800+ in games and content-creation work, not only in encoding. The advantage varied by application—roughly 20–30% in the buyer-guide comparisons—while ordinary office software could feel nearly the same. AnandTech’s 2004 Socket 478 guidance also favored the 2.8C over the Pentium 4 2.8E (Prescott) in its comparison context.

Those conclusions apply to specific period platforms, and “Athlon XP 2800+” can refer to more than one core and bus configuration. Identify the exact chip before treating the comparison as definitive.

Which Athlon XP 2800+ are you comparing?

The model name alone is ambiguous. AnandTech’s buyer-guide comparison used a Barton XP 2800+ with a 333MHz front-side bus and 512KB of L2 cache. A separate AnandTech technical review covered the Thoroughbred-B XP 2800+, whose listed maximum heat dissipation was 74.3W.

  • Barton: 333MHz FSB and 512KB L2 in the cited buyer-guide configuration.
  • Thoroughbred-B: a different core; the cited review lists 74.3W maximum heat dissipation.
  • Before buying: verify the core, FSB, socket, stepping, motherboard BIOS support and the seller’s actual markings.

Do not transfer Barton specifications or benchmark expectations to a Thoroughbred-B chip, or compare the 74.3W figure directly with a complete computer’s wall power.

At-a-glance comparison

Question Athlon XP 2800+ Pentium 4 2.8C Pentium 4 2.8E
Identity used in the cited comparison Barton, 333MHz FSB, 512KB L2 Northwood; 800MHz FSB Prescott; compared with the 2.8C in AnandTech’s 2004 Socket 478 guidance
Games Generally behind the 2.8C in the cited period comparison Generally ahead; AnandTech estimated about a 20–30% gain over the XP 2800+ across its games comparison Not established as faster than the 2.8C; the cited guidance preferred the 2.8C
Office/business applications Often felt close to the Pentium 4 Potentially faster in measured work, but AnandTech said office differences might not be noticeable No separate office percentage established by the cited material
Content creation Behind the 2.8C in the cited comparison About 20–30% ahead in AnandTech’s combined games and content-creation estimate, with variation by workload No controlled, matching result supplied for every content-creation task
Thermal figure available in the sources Thoroughbred-B maximum heat dissipation: 74.3W Not stated in the supplied evidence Not stated in the supplied evidence

Gaming performance

For games of that era, the 2.8C was the stronger choice in AnandTech’s period buyer guide. Its 800MHz FSB and the rest of the Northwood platform helped it lead the tested XP 2800+ configuration, with the guide estimating an advantage in the broad range of 20–30%.

That is an estimate for the guide’s selected games and test systems, not a guaranteed frame-rate uplift in every title. Graphics card limits, memory settings, resolution and the motherboard can narrow or widen the gap. The result should therefore be read as “the 2.8C was usually faster,” rather than as a universal multiplier.

Office and everyday applications

Word processing, spreadsheets, web browsing and similar business tasks were a different story. AnandTech described the office-program differences as potentially imperceptible. Both processors were fast enough that storage speed, memory capacity and the operating system could dominate the user experience.

If the machine’s main role was office work, choosing between these CPUs on benchmark speed alone offered little practical benefit. Platform reliability, the correct motherboard and the condition of a used system mattered more.

Content creation, rendering and other non-encoding work

The 2.8C’s advantage was not limited to video encoding. AnandTech’s buyer guide grouped content creation with games when estimating a roughly 20–30% lead over the XP 2800+. Rendering, image manipulation and other compute-heavy tasks could consequently favor the Northwood, although the exact margin depended on software and whether the workload was limited by the CPU.

The supplied period material does not provide one controlled benchmark matrix covering every rendering, 3D, audio and productivity application on all three exact processors. A specific program may therefore produce a smaller gap, a larger gap or an outcome close to parity.

Why cache and platform design matter

AnandTech described the Athlon XP’s cache as exclusive and reported that its tested Pentium 4 benefited more consistently from increasing L2 cache to 512KB than the tested Athlon XP. Cache capacity alone does not predict the winner: the cache organization, memory subsystem, front-side bus and application all interact.

The 2.8C’s 800MHz FSB is a key platform distinction in the cited 2004 guidance. It is one reason a nominally similar 2.8GHz label does not make the XP 2800+, 2.8C and 2.8E interchangeable in performance or motherboard requirements.

2.8C versus 2.8E

Within AnandTech’s 2004 Socket 478 recommendations, the 2.8C was preferred to the 2.8E Prescott. That is a review-era purchasing judgment for the compared systems, not a rule that every 2.8C defeats every 2.8E under every workload.

For a used computer, check the exact motherboard, BIOS revision, cooling solution and memory support. A 2.8E system that is better maintained or paired with a stronger platform can be a better working machine than a damaged or poorly configured 2.8C system, even if the processor ranking favors Northwood.

Heat, cooling and system condition

The Thoroughbred-B XP 2800+ review lists 74.3W maximum heat dissipation. That is a processor specification under the review’s stated convention, not a measurement of a complete PC’s electricity use. The supplied evidence does not establish comparable thermal figures for the 2.8C and 2.8E, so no direct three-way wattage ranking should be inferred.

On vintage hardware, heatsink contact, fan condition, dried thermal compound, dust and motherboard voltage settings can affect stability as much as the model number. Inspect and test those items before judging a system from its CPU label.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the Pentium 4 2.8C when

  • Gaming or CPU-heavy content creation is the priority.
  • You have a supported Socket 478 board and the 800MHz-FSB Northwood configuration.
  • The systems are similarly priced and in comparable condition.

Choose the Athlon XP 2800+ when

  • You already own a compatible Athlon XP motherboard and only need a replacement or incremental upgrade.
  • Your work is primarily office-oriented, where the period testing found little noticeable difference.
  • The specific Barton or Thoroughbred-B chip is verified and the surrounding system is substantially better maintained.

Consider the 2.8E only after checking the platform

The cited Socket 478 guidance preferred the 2.8C over the 2.8E. If evaluating a 2.8E today, confirm BIOS support, cooling and system condition rather than assuming the shared 2.8GHz rating makes it equivalent to Northwood.

Checklist for a period-hardware listing

  1. Read the markings or seller documentation to distinguish Barton from Thoroughbred-B.
  2. Confirm the processor’s FSB and the motherboard’s supported bus settings.
  3. Verify socket and BIOS compatibility before purchase.
  4. Check heatsink mounting, fan operation and evidence of overheating.
  5. Compare complete-system condition and price, not just the CPU model.
