The ASUSTOR AS6704T is the LOCKERSTOR 4 Gen2, not a Drivestor model. It is a four-bay NAS with four M.2 NVMe slots, dual 2.5GbE, and an optional 10GbE upgrade. Its standout flexibility comes with a trade-off: installing the 10GbE card in the PCIe slot requires removing the M.2 daughterboard. Whether it is worth buying depends on how much you value NVMe capacity and network expansion, and whether its noise and drive-expansion limitations fit your setup.
What the AS6704T is—and what it is not
ASUSTOR identifies model AS6704T as the LOCKERSTOR 4 Gen2. The “Drivestor 4” wording in the supplied title is a family-name mix-up. This review concerns the original AS6704T, not the later AS6704T v2, also called LOCKERSTOR 4 Gen2+. ASUSTOR’s product page includes material about the v2 family, so use the original model’s datasheet for model-specific specifications.
AS6704T specifications at a glance
| Feature | AS6704T specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Celeron N5105, quad-core |
| Memory | 4 GB DDR4 preinstalled; up to 16 GB supported |
| Drive bays | Four SATA III bays for 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch HDDs or SSDs |
| M.2 storage | Four M.2 2280 NVMe slots |
| Networking | Two 2.5-Gigabit Ethernet ports; PCIe expansion slot |
| Volume and RAID types | Single, JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, and RAID 1/5 with hot spare |
These are manufacturer specifications for the original AS6704T. The four M.2 slots are in addition to the four SATA bays, but they do not make the system an eight-bay SATA NAS. Consult ASUSTOR’s datasheet for the model-specific details.
Can you add 10GbE?
Yes. The datasheet describes installing a 10GbE network card in the PCIe slot, but doing so requires removing the M.2 daughterboard. That creates a direct choice: keep the board that provides M.2 storage, or use the PCIe slot for the 10GbE upgrade. The AS6704T already has two 2.5GbE ports, so consider whether faster networking is worth giving up the M.2 board before choosing a configuration.

What independent reviewers liked and criticized
NAS Compares characterized the AS6704T as a respectable, hardware-focused NAS. The reviewer praised its four NVMe slots, 10GbE upgrade option, memory expansion, USB 3.2 Gen 2, HDMI 2.0b, filesystem choice, and the responsiveness and clarity of ASUSTOR’s ADM interface. These are that reviewer’s assessments, not a guarantee of performance or fit for every workload.
The same review criticized the metal chassis and trays for producing more hum and vibration, described its mixed-drive RAID expansion as less flexible, and pointed to some aging app and software features. Those observations are useful when weighing the hardware, but they are review judgments rather than universal measurements. NAS Compares also mentioned ASUSTOR’s AS6004U expansion unit; check current compatibility, availability, and price before treating it as a suitable expansion path.

Which drives should you use?
The four SATA bays accept 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA III HDDs or SSDs. Choose drives based on the capacity and RAID layout you actually need, then check each exact model against ASUSTOR’s current compatibility information before purchasing. The evidence here does not establish a complete current compatibility list.

The M.2 slots are for M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs. A TweakTown review tested an AS6704T supplied by ASUSTOR with four Seagate IronWolf HDDs, but that setup does not establish that every IronWolf model is currently compatible or that every owner needs four drives. HDDs and SSDs are selected separately; the enclosure’s specifications do not mean drives are included.

- [Advanced Storage for Creators & Businesses] Designed for video editing, virtualization, AI workloads, Docker containers, and enterprise backup environments, delivering workstation-class NAS performance in a compact desktop form factor.
Is the AS6704T worth buying?
It is most compelling if you want four conventional drive bays plus a substantial NVMe-storage option, dual 2.5GbE, and the possibility of 10GbE. Its 16 GB memory ceiling and range of listed volume types add flexibility, while the PCIe/M.2-board conflict matters if you expect to use both NVMe storage and 10GbE.
Look more carefully at competing NAS models if quiet operation, flexible expansion with mixed drives, or a newer-feeling software and app ecosystem is a priority. Compare the number and type of SATA and M.2 slots, onboard and upgradeable networking, processor and memory ceiling, RAID and expansion behavior, software features, physical noise, and total cost after adding drives. Current pricing, stock, and the state of the app ecosystem are not established here, so they should be checked for your region and intended configuration.
